The invention relates to a reference electrode arrangement with an electrolyte surrounding a metallic electrode for determining the electrochemical potential and a method for producing such arrangements and their use for measuring the potential.
The reference electrodes available today (according to DIN 50 927 and WvBaeckmann, W. Schwenk and W. Prinz, "Handbook of Cathodic Corrosion Protection" 3rd edition, 1989 page 76, table 3.1) are designed for use in aqueous electrolyte solutions and have been developed not proven in long-term use in concrete. The electrolyte of these known reference electrodes consists of potassium chloride, sodium chloride, potassium sulfate or copper sulfate, is not hygroscopic and accordingly dries up over time. As a result, the reference electrodes become high-resistance; there are serious measurement errors.
In addition, the sulfate of the reference electrode reacts with the calcium present in concrete to form gypsum, which clogs the ion-permeable diaphragm of the electrode. A chloride-containing reference electrode electrolyte is also unsuitable for use in concrete, since the chloride diffuses out of the electrode, contaminates the concrete and thus increases the risk of corrosion of the reinforcement.
The object of the invention is, in particular, to provide reference electrode arrangements whose electrolyte does not dry out even at low moisture values and which are also suitable for use in concrete buildings.
According to the invention, the aforementioned object is achieved in that the electrolyte consists of a solid mixture with water molecules embedded therein.
The process for producing such a reference electrode arrangement comprises, in a first process step, mixing the poorly water-soluble metal salts, in the dry state, with potassium carbonate and bentonite, in a second process step this mixture is inserted and compressed in an electrode housing together with the metal electrode, in a third process step the mixture is moistened with water and in a fourth process step the air enclosed in the mixture is evacuated and the housing is sealed.
For their use, the reference electrode arrangement is arranged in a prepared opening in concrete and connected to known measuring devices (e.g. mV meters and / or recording devices from Philips).
Another method for the direct installation of reference electrode arrangements is characterized in that a bore is made in the body to be measured and / or monitored, into which a tube is inserted which at least partially covers the wall of the bore, and in one a further process step, the solid mixture and the metal electrode are used.
Preferred developments of the subject matter of the invention are described in dependent claims.
According to claim 2, an electrolyte from a solid mixture of hygroscopic compounds and bentonite has proven to be particularly advantageous.
The hygroscopic compounds listed in claim 3 have proven themselves as components of the electrolyte of the reference electrode arrangement due to their good long-term behavior.
This results in a further advantage, the electrolyte is liquid up to a relative humidity of less than 50% or at least has a liquid phase and thus guarantees the ion transport perfectly.
Such electrolytes are particularly advantageous due to their alkalinity, which result in good compatibility with the pore liquid of the concrete.
The metal electrodes, according to claim 4, have proven to be advantageous.
For the electrolyte, as a redox pair, mixtures with sparingly water-soluble salts of the cations of the metal electrode are suitable.
The following combinations of sparingly water-soluble salts and hydroxides in combination with metal electrodes are preferred, according to claim 6:
Zinc oxalate and calcium oxalate in combination with zinc as a metal electrode. Lead oxalate, lead carbonate, lead sulfate, calcium sulfate or calcium hydroxide in combination with lead metal electrode. Silver carbonate or silver chloride with lead chloride combined with a silver metal electrode. Tin hydroxide and calcium hydroxide combined with tin electrode metal and / or tin-lead alloy metal electrode. Copper hydroxide and calcium hydroxide combined with a copper metal electrode.
In contrast to the known reference electrodes with electrolytes containing water-soluble sulfate and chloride, the poorly water-soluble chloride and sulfate compounds, lead sulfate, lead chloride and silver chloride mentioned do not interfere, since their solubility products are very small.
Particularly suitable as ion-permeable wall, according to claim 7, are unfired clay, unfired porcelain, hardened Portland cement paste with sufficient pore volume, or leached out, porous glass.
The clay diaphragm is particularly suitable for the production of reference electrode arrangements provided in concrete, since it is well compatible with concrete.
The method according to claim 8 has proven to be very economical and allows the construction of simply designed and therefore easily replaceable reference electrode arrangements.
The method according to claim 9 is particularly cost-effective and also suitable for determining the electrochemical potential of metal structures in undeveloped properties or electrical fields in undeveloped properties.
The use of the reference electrode arrangement according to claim 10 in concrete buildings allows the electrochemical potential of the reinforcement to be measured and is used for the experimental determination of the protective current to be fed in for permanent cathodic protection.
Exemplary embodiments of the subject matter of the invention are shown schematically in the drawings.
It shows:
1 is an interchangeable reference electrode arrangement for installation in concrete buildings, in longitudinal section,
2 shows a cup-shaped ion-permeable wall of a reference electrode arrangement,
Fig. 3 shows a variant of Fig. 2, an attachable wall and
Fig. 4 shows a fixed reference electrode arrangement in a medium to be measured.
1, a reference electrode arrangement is designated by 1. It consists of a housing 2, a plastic tube, which is closed at one end with an ion-permeable wall 5 with an end plug 6. At the other end, a corrugated electrode 3 with its two-part electrode head 9, 9 min is inserted centrally in the housing 2. An electrical cable 7 is welded to the electrode 3 at a connection point 8.
The whole is filled with a solid electrolyte 4 and sealed with epoxy resin (trademark Araldit, Ciba-Geigy AG, Basel).
The ion-permeable wall consists of unbaked clay, the sealing pin 6 made of polyvinyl chloride, the housing made of polyethylene, the inner part 9 of the electrode head made of silicone rubber, the outer part 9 min also made of polyethylene.
The metal of the electrode 3 is tin; the electrolyte 4 consists of 2 g bentonite, 5 g potassium carbonate, 1 g calcium hydroxide and 0.5 g tin hydroxide. The total length of the reference electrode arrangement 1 is 200 mm; their largest diameter is 8 mm.
The illustrations in FIGS. 2 and 3 apply as an exemplary embodiment of ion-permeable walls.
The cup-shaped wall 5a consists of unfired clay and can be easily inserted into the interior of a tubular housing. The further wall 5b consists of unfired porcelain and is placed with its largest opening from the outside onto a housing and glued to the end face thereof.
Due to the solid properties of the electrolyte, reference electrodes can also be easily produced on site and / or in the case of prefabricated concrete elements.
According to FIG. 4, holes 12 (blind holes of defined dimensions) are made in the medium to be measured - here concrete 10 with reinforcements 11 - into which the electrolyte 4 is pressed by a press otherwise provided for sealing compounds. A tube is then inserted into a predetermined depth for 2 minutes. The bore is closed flush by means of a pin serving as an electrode head for 9 minutes and a drill-like electrode is screwed in for 3 minutes with its tip for 3 minutes through a central opening (not shown) in the pin. In the shaft end of the electrode 3 min, an electrical cable is used for 7 min.
The electrodes shown above are not calibrated for qualitative measurements or adjusted in connection with exchangeable reference electrodes provided in their vicinity.
The following are some preferred examples for creating reference electrode arrangements.
example 1

Then the cable connection 8 and the attachment of the electrode head 9 are carried out in a known manner.
Example 2

The mass is then moistened with a potassium carbonate solution, made air-free by evacuation and sealed with araldite. Then the cable connection 8 and the attachment of the electrode head 9 are carried out.
Example 3
1 g of copper hydroxide, 5 g of potassium carbonate, 1 g of calcium hydroxide and 2 g of bentonite are mixed dry, in a mortar, into a fine powder, poured into the electrode housing together with a copper-metal electrode and tapped firmly to compact the mass. The mass is then moistened with a potassium carbonate solution, made air-free by evacuation and sealed with araldite. The cable connection 8 and the attachment of the electrode head 9 are then carried out.
Example 4
There are 5 g of potassium carbonate, 1 g of calcium hydroxide, 0.5 g of silver carbonate and 3 g of bentonite dry, mixed in a mortar, to a fine powder, poured into the electrode housing together with a silver metal electrode and tapped firmly to the mass to condense. The mass is then moistened with a potassium carbonate solution, made air-free by evacuation and sealed with araldite. The cable connection 8 and the attachment of the electrode head 9 are then carried out in a manner known per se.

The described reference electrode arrangements were tested for their stability with regard to the electrochemical potentials. The electrochemical potential differences were measured against a standard copper / copper sulfate reference electrode arrangement. In stress tests, the reference electrode arrangements according to the invention were also exposed to extreme conditions. In a cyclic test operation, potentials were measured at 0 ° C and in boiling water. In between, the reference electrode assemblies were dried out with paper to simulate dried concrete. The electrochemical potentials were then monitored and measured at 20 ° C. for 45 days.
These measurement results against a copper / copper sulfate electrode are summarized in Table 2.

The subject of the invention serves as a permanent and easily replaceable reference electrode arrangement in reinforced concrete buildings. However, it can also be used to determine geological conditions in terrain and can be easily created and manufactured to suit the surrounding conditions.
The mechanically simple construction of the reference electrode arrangement makes it possible to miniaturize it compared to the exemplary embodiments, in particular because complicated seals can be dispensed with.
