Description
The present invention relates to a method for dimensionally stabilizing wood-based materials containing a temperature-resistant binder, which is not a urea resin, which have been compressed by a pressing process, by heat-pressure treatment.
The natural dimensional change of wood and wood products with changing wood moisture is a disadvantage of this group of materials. The dimensional stability can be improved by constructive, chemical and physical measures. There are numerous solutions to this in practice and in the literature.
DE-PS 2 263 758 describes a method for dimensionally stabilizing wood at temperatures between 120 and 180 ° C. in a gas atmosphere at gas pressures of up to 15 bar as a particularly economical method. With these process conditions, dimensional stability improvements of 50-70% can be achieved within a few hours. With solid wood, however, there is a high risk of crack formation in damp wood. For this reason, wood with an initial moisture content of less than 10% is used in the process according to DE-OS 2 916 677 and tempered under pressure at temperatures between 160 and 240 ° C. in a gas atmosphere.
For wood-based materials that have been compacted by a pressing process, such as chipboard or fiberboard as well as plywood or plywood, the disadvantage of the natural dimensional change of the wood in the board level is only very slightly effective, but perpendicular to the board level there is an extremely high thickness source when moisture is absorbed -lung of up to 30%, which far exceeds the natural swelling of wood. The reason for this great swelling in thickness is the effort of the wood fibers and laminates to return to the starting position before pressing and compacting.
Attempts have therefore been made to achieve dimensional stabilization of chipboard by tempering wood chips by means of heat and pressure according to the process according to DE-PS 2 263 758 or DE-OS 2 916 677 and producing the chipboard from these treated chips.
However, this way of working is associated with a considerable risk of fire. In addition, the chips become brittle during the heat-pressure treatment, so that difficulties arise in the production of the chipboard.
In the process according to DE-OS 1 453 382, chipboard which is glue-proof glued is treated with moist air under pressure at temperatures between 70 and 150 ° C. Due to the necessary treatment time of one or even several days, this procedure is extremely uneconomical. In addition, the reduction in the thickness swelling is relatively slight and still has to be improved by additionally applying a hydrophobizing agent to the chips.
It was therefore the task of finding a safe, economical process for the dimensional stabilization of wood-based materials which had been compressed by a pressing process with which the treated wood-based material had an optimal swelling resistance within a short treatment time.
The solution to the problem is that the wood materials compressed by a pressing process are treated at temperatures of 160-200 ° C in a gas atmosphere that has been compressed 4 to 15 bar.
Although it was originally assumed that under the process conditions according to the invention, the gluing of the wood-based materials would be destroyed, that the handling of preformed parts combined with uniform reclimatization would be difficult and that irreparable distortions would result from uneven tensions it turns out that under the conditions according to the invention, wood-based materials such as chipboard and laminated wood can be easily and easily tempered and that the shape changes during the treatment process can be negligibly small. The condition at high pressures and temperatures stabilizes the condition after the wood material has been compacted; the resilience of the fibers to their initial state is very much reduced. At the same time, the wood fibers, as described in the patents DE-OS 2 916 677 and DE-PS 2 263 758, are improved in their swelling behavior. Therefore, the process described also reduces the already relatively low moisture deformation in the board levels with plywood and particle board. This is an advantage especially for large or very long components.
It is a further advantage of the method according to the invention that tempered wood-based materials are obtained whose thickness swell is less under the influence of moisture than the thickness swell of wood-based materials which have been produced from wood chips treated according to DE-PS 2 263 758 and DE-OS 2 916 677.
The reduction in thickness swelling that has been achieved enables the use of dimensionally stable profiles based on chipboard to be improved and expanded. It is conceivable to manufacture plastic-coated window profiles based on plywood or chipboard. Because of the decrease in the flexural strength of the wood-based materials according to this process, the types with high flexural strength such as. B. the OSB boards preferred.
An essential prerequisite for the process is the temperature resistance of the binders used in the wood-based material. Phenolic resins are preferably used here. Urea resins cannot be used.

Wood materials are less sensitive to cracking than solid wood. Therefore the water content can be varied in the range of 0-20%. The larger the smallest wood dimension, usually the board thickness, the lower the water content should be. The form stability of the tempered board is always better, the lower the wood moisture. On the other hand, the wood dimension stabilization is better at high levels of moisture. The optimal range of wood moisture is therefore between 4 and 12%.
The wood materials are treated in a reaction vessel in a compressed gas atmosphere at temperatures of 160-220 ° C. The working pressures are between 4 and 15 bar, in particular between 6 and 12 bar.
The duration of treatment is usually between 0.5 and 8 hours; it is generally the shorter the higher the temperature is selected.
Particularly good results, in particular with regard to the avoidance of stresses and partial pressure gradients, can be achieved if the products escaping from the wood during the thermal treatment are enriched in the reaction vessel. This can be achieved e.g. by a high degree of filling of the reactor, that is to say by a low ratio of reactor volume to wood volume, preferably less than 7, and / or by adding wood condensate and / or one or more wood condensate ingredients.
From the ingredients present in the wood condensate, such as. B. formic acid, acetic acid, furfural, furfurylako-hol, methanol, or water, acetic acid and / or formic acid are particularly suitable. Also higher alkane carboxylic acids, especially with up to 6 carbon atoms, or also the anhydrides of the acids mentioned, e.g. Acetic anhydride can be used as an additive. The additives can be introduced into the reaction space before the heat treatment, or are preferably fed to the reactor from the outside during the treatment. Another possibility is to soak the wood to be treated with the additives before treatment.
The amount of additive is generally not critical. The sum of the partial pressures should generally not exceed 12 bar; Under no circumstances should concentrations be reached at which the additives in the reaction vessel are already partially condensed.
For safety reasons and to suppress oxidative degradation of wood, the oxygen concentration in the reaction vessel should not exceed 5 percent by volume. In order to ensure that the treated wood tints as brightly as possible, it is advisable to switch off oxygen completely; one then works in an inert gas atmosphere, e.g. under nitrogen.
As a reaction vessel (reactor) is preferably an autoclave made of corrosion-resistant material, eg. B. made of 1.4571 or 1.4541 steel. The size and dimensioning depends on the size of the wood to be used. The heat is preferably supplied via heating coils built into the reaction vessel through superheated steam from, for. B. 40 bar. To improve the heat exchange from the heat transfer medium into the gas atmosphere and from the gas atmosphere into the wood, a gas circulation in the reaction space, e.g. B. by means of a fan or a fan, proven to be useful.
The relaxation and cooling of the reactor and its contents must be done slowly to avoid product damage.
The respective time period depends on the product. With chipboard in the thickness 16 mm z. B. can be relaxed within 15 minutes from 10 bar to 1 bar and cooled from 190 ° C circulating air temperature to room temperature.
