Description
The invention relates to a process for the production of chipboard with reduced release of formaldehyde by hot pressing wood chips provided with urea-formaldehyde resin as glue resin, urea being added and also compressed as a formaldehyde-absorbing agent.
It is known that urea-formaldehyde resins are widely used as glue resin for the inexpensive production of chipboard. This glue resin releases formaldehyde during processing and also later, so that the permissible maximum concentration of formaldehyde in rooms equipped with such panels or the like can be exceeded.
In the process of the type mentioned above (cf. DE-OS 16 53 167), glue resins based on urea-formaldehyde condensates are used which contain relatively small amounts of formaldehyde, based on urea, condensed. Molar ratios of 1: 1.5 to 1: 1.8 are addressed. Furthermore, it was proposed in this document to absorb formaldehyde by substances which are suitable for this, such as Urea. The amounts of these additives are limited, however, because the addition to the glue resin reduces its setting speed and the strength properties of the chipboard produced therefrom are impaired.
From DE-OS 25 53 459 a method for the production of chipboard with reduced release of formaldehyde is also known. There it is found that the use of low-formaldehyde resins, whose molar ratio of urea / formaldehyde is about 1: 1.4, does not lead to the goal, although it does improve. Attention is also drawn to the deterioration in the adhesive properties of the low-formaldehyde resins and to the impossibility of producing resins with useful adhesive properties under the stated molar ratio. The cited publication further states that all formaldehyde-binding additives to the glue liquors and / or the chips have undesirable side effects, in particular a reduced curing speed and poorer strength properties. Furthermore, the transverse tensile strength is impaired and the swelling and also the water absorption are increased, so that processes of this type, on the chips or a part thereof, e.g. Applying urea could not prevail in practice. For this reason, DE-OS 25 53 459 proposes cellulose fiber as a carrier for the urea, to which the formaldehyde-absorbing agent, for example urea, is to be applied and dried before addition to the wood chips provided with urea-formaldehyde resin as glue resin. Here too, urea is recommended as a suitable absorbent for this special treatment before the actual hot pressing. It goes without saying that this separate treatment significantly increases the effort for the production of chipboard. At the same time, however, a drop in strength can be observed disadvantageously, although this is also not as great as when the urea is added directly to a glue bath composed of formaldehyde resin and urea.
DE-OS 2 444 002 discloses a process for the production of particle board in which isocyanate is used as the glue resin. In addition, the chips are treated with an acid amide before, during or after the application of the glue resin. Urea is recommended as a suitable acid amide. This treatment is said to improve the cooking or wet strength. The multiple amount of isocyanate compared to urea is used. However, the urea cannot have the effect of absorbing formaldehyde here, since isocyanate does not give off formaldehyde.
It has become known from the publication by Stegmann, G., P. Schorning and W. Kratz "Studies on the Manufacture and Properties of High-Resin Wood Chipboard Materials" Research Report of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, No. 1875, Cologne and Opladen 1967, page 28 that the strength of chipboard can be increased by increasing the amount of glue resin. It is suggested to counter the loss of strength of particle board when this is found by increasing the glue resin content, the increased glue resin content being evenly distributed over the entire board. On the other hand, it is from the magazine "Wood as a raw and material" 29 (1971), 2 ,. 45 to 50, known to use urea-formaldehyde resin with isocyanate together as a size resin in order to increase the strength of boards glued only with urea-formaldehyde resin. It therefore makes sense to compensate for this loss of strength by adding isocyanate when adding urea as the formaldehyde-absorbing agent to chipboard strength when glue is glued to the chips with urea-formaldehyde resin. However, the use of the relatively expensive isocyanate in the entire board deteriorates the economic viability of such a proposal for the production of chipboard.

Ren of the type described in the introduction so that, while maintaining the addition of urea to the urea-formaldehyde resin, low-formaldehyde (practically formaldehyde-free) chipboards can be produced with good economy and a reduction in the curing speed and a deterioration in the strength properties of the chipboard produced therewith can be avoided. The swelling and water absorption should not be worsened either.
According to the invention, this is achieved in that urea-formaldehyde resin and urea without a carrier are used both in the middle layer and in the top layer and that isocyanate is additionally used in the middle layer with moderate proportions by weight of glue resin and in the top layer a high proportion by weight of urea -Formaldehyde resin and urea without a carrier is used. The invention is based on the knowledge that the harmful effects of the addition of urea in the middle class can be countered by using isocyanate. This has two advantages. On the one hand, the drop in adhesive force caused by the addition of urea is eliminated, because the isocyanate also crosslinks in self-contained groups of urea-formaldehyde resin and urea. On the other hand, no additional water is entered, i.e. the proportion of water inside is kept small for production purposes. Furthermore, the invention cleverly uses the knowledge of being able to cope with higher proportions by weight of glue resin and also higher proportions of water in the cover layer, because higher temperatures act here and the water vapor can be removed with a short pressing time or used as a heat carrier. In addition, there is the need for manufacturing. counter to provide the higher moisture required in the top layer for the purpose of higher compression during pressing.
In the middle layer 2 to 7% by weight is preferably used to form urea-formaldehyde resin, urea 5 and 1 to 3% by weight isocyanate, while in the top layer 10 to 15% by weight urea-formaldehyde resin together with 1 to 3 wt .-% urea are used. The glue resins and the urea can be used mixed for both the middle layer and the top layer to form a glue liquor. For particularly low release of formaldehyde, about 2% by weight of urea-formaldehyde resin, 2% by weight of isocyanate and 1% by weight of urea are used in the middle layer. To improve the swelling behavior, about 5% by weight of urea-formaldehyde resin with 1% by weight of isocyanate and 1% by weight of urea can be introduced into the middle layer.
In the middle layer and / or in the top layer, urea and formaldehyde can be used in a molar ratio between 1: 1.4 and 20 1: 1.0 to form urea-formaldehyde resin. Surprisingly, it can be used to produce panels with the desired properties. If the glue resins are only used in the outer layers, i.e. in the outer layers, then the higher temperature acting there is used over a relatively longer period of time than is the case in the middle layer. This is why the outer layers of these low-formaldehyde glue resins are still freezing. If the low-formaldehyde glue resins are used in the middle layer, an out-30 is created immediately by the presence of the isocyanate, i.e. the drop in mechanical and hygroscopic properties is counteracted by the addition of isocyanate. In addition, the isocyanate also binds the urea used as a formaldehyde scavenger.
