Bevorzugt verwendet man frischgefälltes Aluminiumhydroxid.

The invention relates to a curable mixture for the production of reinforced elastomeric plastics based on epoxy resin, which contains needle-shaped crystals of certain density and dimensions which are insoluble in the epoxy resin.
It is known to reinforce epoxy resins with fibrous fillers, such as carbon or glass fibers. In the case of longer-chain epoxy resins which can be converted into elastomeric molding materials, the strength values are increased with glass fibers, but the high ductility through which molding materials made of elastomeric epoxy resins are distinguished is lost when reinforced with glass fibers.
US Pat. No. 2,915,475 discloses the production of acicular aluminum oxide monohydrate and its use to improve the mechanical properties of elastomeric plastics by mixing them in the plastics in an amount of 1-30% by weight. However, our own experiments have shown that the aluminum oxide monohydrate known from the US patent is not suitable for reinforcing elastomeric epoxy resins.
It has now been found that needle-shaped crystals of certain density and dimensions which are insoluble in epoxy resin represent excellent reinforcing fillers for elastomeric epoxy resins, since the elastomeric epoxy resins reinforced in this way result in molding materials which are distinguished both by high strength and by increased toughness and ductility .
The invention thus relates to a curable mixture for producing reinforced elastomeric plastics, comprising (1) an epoxy resin and (2) a hardener for epoxy resins, which is characterized in that (a) at least one of components (1) and (2) at least is trivalent, (b) components (1) and (2) together comprise at least 60% by weight, preferably at least 90% by weight, of aliphatic chain segments, (c) the number of atoms in the chains of the components (1) and (2) between two active groups together is 25 to 700, preferably 80 to 350, a phenylene group having 4 atoms being calculated, and (d) components (1) and / or (2) aliphatic chain tens segments in the form of polyester,

Other suitable curable mixtures are e.g. those containing an epoxy compound with 3 epoxy groups, such as triglycidyl isocyanurate, and as component (2) a polyester polycarboxylic acid with segments of the formula I -O-RI-O-CO-R2-CO-q (I) in which Rl and R2 are independent of one another mean an alkylene group with at least 2 carbon atoms in the chain and an average of at least 3.5 and at most 30 carbon atoms per O-bridge are present in the chain without taking into account the carbon atoms of the -CO-O groups and the radicals RI and R2 together contain at least one alkyl group, a cycloalkyl group or an aryl group as substituents for an H atom, and in which q denotes a number from 2 to 40, which is, however, so large,
that the segment contains at least 30 carbon atoms without taking into account the carbon atoms of the -CO-O groups in the chain. There is preferably 0.7 to 1.2, in particular 0.9 to 1.1, equivalent polyester carboxylic acid per 1 equivalent of epoxy compound. Suitable polyester carboxylic acids are, for example, those based on the following polyalcohols and polycarboxylic acids: 11 moles of sebacic acid - 10 moles of neopentyl glycol
8 moles of adipic acid - 7 moles of neopentyl glycol 13 moles of adipic acid - 12 moles of neopentyl glycol
8 moles of adipic acid - 7 moles of trimethylhexanediol
8 moles of trimethyladipic acid - 7 moles of neopentyl glycol 21 moles of adipic acid - 20 moles of neopentyl glycol
4 moles of dimerized fatty acid - 3 moles of diethylene glycol
3 moles of dimerized fatty acid - 2 moles of hexanediol
Glycerin - adipic acid - butanediol - neopentyl glycol (1: 9: 3: 3). Trimethylhexanediol - adipic acid - hexanediol neopentyl glycol (1: 8: 2: 3).
R2 in the formula I can also mean a group derived from a dimerized mono- or di-unsaturated fatty acid.
Examples of such polyester polycarboxylic acids are derived from the following polyalcohols and polycarboxylic acids: 4 moles of dimerized fatty acid - 3 moles of diethylene glycol 4 moles of dimerized fatty acid - 3 moles of hexanediol 3 moles of dimerized fatty acid - 2 moles of hexanediol.
Information on the basics of producing such long-chain, aliphatic polyester polycarboxylic acids can be found in a publication by H. Batzer et al. in Applied Macromolecular Chemistry 1973, pages 349-411.
The acicular crystals contained in the curable mixtures as component (3) can be inorganic compounds, such as, for example, the commercially available anhydrous calcium sulfate, or inorganic-organic compounds, such as the water-free aluminum monohydroxycarboxylic acid salts.
These aluminum salts, which have not yet been described in the literature, can be prepared in known technical facilities by neutral or basic aluminum oxide or aluminum hydroxide with acetic acid, propionic acid, benzoic acid, a dicarboxylic acid of the formula HO2C-Cn-CO2H, where n is a number from 3 to 10, or their acid anhydrides or mixtures of these carboxylic acids or anhydrides in the presence of an inert solvent or without solvent, with the exclusion of water and at elevated temperatures, and the water of reaction is continuously removed from the reaction mixture.
Suitable aluminum oxides and hydroxides are e.g.
Au03, Al (OH) 3, AIO (OH), Al203 H20 and Al203. 3H20.
Freshly precipitated aluminum hydroxide is preferably used. The filler to be used according to the invention and any further additives, if appropriate, are incorporated into the curable elastomeric epoxy resin mixture by mixing in according to the methods customary in industry. The hardenable epoxy resin mixtures filled with the needle-shaped crystals are furthermore distinguished by their favorable processability and can be cast like normal casting resins, since the filler causes only a relatively small increase in viscosity. Due to the low specific weight of the filler to be used according to the invention, no or only a small amount of sedimentation takes place in casting resins, so that molding materials produced from casting resins also have a uniform distribution of the filler.
With the fillers to be used according to the invention, an extraordinary reinforcing effect is achieved even with small additions. The molding materials produced from the curable mixtures according to the invention have improved mechanical properties with regard to tensile strength, tear propagation resistance, notch strength, toughness and elongation. The improvements mentioned take place without the needle-shaped fillers having been oriented in a specific direction before the hardenable mixture has hardened.

example 1
2 It o-dichlorobenzene are placed in a 6 lt sulfonation flask equipped with a stirrer, thermometer and distillation attachment with a descending condenser and 1168 g (8 mol) of adipic acid are suspended therein. The mixture is then heated with stirring until a homogeneous solution has formed at an internal temperature of 150 ° -155 ° C., whereupon 312 g (4 mol) of aluminum hydroxide, Al (OH) 3, are added. Now the temperature in the reaction mixture is raised further until distilling off of aqueous o-dichlorobenzene begins at 1700C. The progress of the reaction manifests itself in a constant increase in suspended substance and a difficult stirrability. 2100 ml of water-containing o-dichlorobenzene are distilled off during the total reaction time of 96 hours.
This amount is replaced by the continuous addition of 4200 ml o-dichlorobenzene. The increasing appearance of the needle-shaped product can be followed in the microscope as the reaction time progresses. For working up, the hot reaction mixture is filtered off with suction and the filter residue is stirred 4 times with 6 it isopropanol at 75 ° C. and filtered off. The product purified in this way is dried at 100 ° C./2 kPa for 48 hours. This results in 723 g of a colorless, needle-shaped product. Elemental analysis: C 37.46%, H 5.11%, Al 14.10%. The length of the needles ranges between 0.1-4.0 cm, their width between 0.050.15 cm, the density was 1.40 g / cm3 and the spec.
Surface determined with 2.81 m2 / g (according to the method of nitrogen adsorption by Brunauer, Emmett and Teller). The product begins to decompose at 410 "C (thermogravimetric analysis TGA, in air).

The mixture is heated further, The reaction mixture quickly becomes viscous, so that after 4 hours of reaction a further 550 ml of dimethylformamide have to be added so that the mixture remains stirrable. The reaction is then continued for 43 hours under gentle reflux. The mixture then becomes hot filtered, the filter residue listed 4 times with 1.5 It isopropanol each, filtered and finally dried at 100 C 13.3 Pa to constant weight.

Are placed in a 1.5 liter sulfonation flask equipped with a stirrer, thermometer and distillation attachment with a descending condenser ), suspended in 400 ml of o-dichlorobenzene with heating to 177 ° C. At this internal temperature, the water-containing o-dichlorobenzene slowly begins to distill off azeotropically.
After a reaction time of 20 hours, the suspension becomes viscous. The good stirrability of the mixture is maintained by continuously replacing the distillate (600 ml) and adding fresh o-dichlorobenzene (total 850 ml). After a reaction time of 80 hours, the hot suspension is filtered, the filter residue is washed 4 times with 1 liter of isopropanol at 70 ° C., filtered and then dried at 110 ° C./13.3 Pa. (bath temperature 130 ° C.). In order to maintain stirrability and to replace the acetic acid distilled off, a further 1000 ml of fresh acetic acid are added over the course of the entire reaction time of 72 hours added in 100 ml portions.
The progress of the reaction can be easily monitored in the microscope and the insoluble product is finally in the form of fine needles.

The mixture is poured into 2 mm thick molds (2x 150x 150 mm) and cured for 14 hours at 140 "C. The test specimens punched out in accordance with ISO 527 have the following properties: tensile strength 7.8 (2.6) N / mm2 elongation at break 529 ( 339)%
The values given in brackets are measured on the analog molded bodies without reinforcing agents.
Both in terms of strength and elongation, a surprisingly strong increase results from the addition of only 6% needles.
Example 7
The procedure is as in Example 6, but instead of aluminum acetate needles, those based on benzoic acid according to Preparation Example V are incorporated into the polyester.
The test specimens obtained after curing have the following properties: tensile strength: 11.7 N / mm2 elongation at break: 548%
Example 8
An acidic polyester is produced from 8 moles of adipic acid and 7 moles of neopentyl glycol using the melting process. 68.7 g (= 0.1 eq.) Of the polyester obtained are rubbed with 5 g of Al-acetate needles in accordance with Preparation Example IV on the three-roll mill and, as in Example 1, with 0.1 eq. Triglycidyl isocyanurate hardened.
The molded articles made from it have the following properties: tensile strength = 4.3 (1.5) N / mm2 elongation at break = 255 (148)% tear strength = 4.8 (2.6) N / mm (again, the values for analog test specimen without the addition of the reinforcing agent)
This example shows the enormous improvement in the strength and tear resistance of the notched tensile body by the addition of 6% needles without reducing the extensibility.
Example 9
An acidic polyester is produced from 23 moles of adipic acid and 22 moles of neopentyl glycol by the melting process.
The polyester obtained has an acid equivalent weight of 1532.9 g (6% by weight) of the aluminum acetate needles produced according to Example IV are worked into 153 g (0.1 eq.) Of the above-described polyester on a three-roll mill, heated to 130 ° C. and well mixed with 11.0 g (0.1 eq.) of triglycidyl isocyanurate After adding 0.3 g of the accelerator described in Example 5, the mixture is poured into the molds and cured according to Example 1. Rubber-elastic molded articles are obtained, of which punched out according to ISO 527 test specimens, which have the following properties: tensile strength = 12.5 N / mm2 (2.4) elongation at break = 578% (368)
The values given in brackets are measured on the analog molded bodies without reinforcing agents.
A comparison shows that the shaped bodies reinforced according to the invention have an 8-fold improved toughness. The aluminum acetate needles used have the following dimensions: Length: 0.3 to 1.9 µm thickness: 0.02 to 0.5 µm length / thickness = 9 (average)
Comparative example
Aluminum monohydrate is prepared according to the procedure described in Example 33 of U.S. Patent 2,915,475. The fine powdery material has the following dimensions: length and thickness = 40 to 400 .mu.m. The aluminum monohydrate is incorporated into the polyester produced according to Example 9 in the same amount and mixed with triglycidyl isocyanurate and the accelerator used there, so that the amount of this filler is also 6% by weight.
The aluminum monohydrate already showed strong sedimentation during processing, which does not occur with the needles to be used according to the invention. The test specimens produced analogously show only low strengths: tensile strength = 0.85 N / mm2 elongation at break = 132%
The aluminum monohydrate produced by the known method is therefore not suitable for the reinforcement of elastomeric epoxy resins.
Example 10
Example 9 is repeated and instead of the aluminum acetate needles used there, 6% by weight of anhydrous calcium sulfate needles (commercially available under the name anhydride fiber 231 B) are incorporated. The molding compositions cured according to Example 1 have the following properties: tensile strength = 5.2 N / mm2 elongation at break = 870%
The CaSO4 needles used above had the following dimensions: length = 1 to 10 μm thickness = 50 to 600 came length / thickness = 50
comparison
Example 10 is repeated and instead of the CaSO4 needles used there are 6% by weight of gypsum fibers (trade name SKW 230 A) with the following dimensions:
: Length = 20 to 500 µm by thickness = 10 to 200 µm by length / thickness = 2 incorporated into the elastomeric epoxy resin composition.
The molding compositions cured according to Example 1 have the following properties: tensile strength = 1.2 N / mm2 elongation at break = 744%
The needles have the correct length, but are too thick, which is why no reinforcing effects are obtained on the molded materials.
