Description
The present invention relates to liquid coating compositions on a low-solvent or solvent-free basis, the coating compositions containing a binder and, if appropriate, customary auxiliaries and the binder consisting of aminoplasts and polyesters.
Derartige umweltfreundliche Überzugsmittel sind bereits seit einigen Jahren bekannt (DE-AS 2 019 282). Such environmentally friendly coating agents have been known for several years (DE-AS 2 019 282). Also known are coating compositions which contain polyesters, the acid component of which is wholly or partly formed from hexahydroterephthalic acid units (DE-PSS 1 644 766, 2 343 436.2 457 775; DE-OS 2 437 217). DE-PS s 1 644 766 expressly claims no coating compositions which are low or free of solvents. DE-PS 2 343 436 is limited to acids that can be used in addition to hexahydroterephthalic acid to aromatic dicarboxylic acids with carboxyl groups in 1,2- or. 1.3 position. io DE-PS 2 457 775 aims in the same direction (see column 5, line 20).
As detailed experiments have shown, the coating agents of the prior art have a decisive disadvantage: If coatings are to be obtained which meet the high requirements of practice, baking temperatures of> 130 ° C, mostly even of> 150 °, have been required up to now C can be applied (DE-OS 2 437 217, Example 3). In order to save energy costs, the baking temperatures should be reduced - while maintaining the good final properties, of course. Baking temperatures of <150 ° C or <130 ° C can be used for the products of the prior art, but it is then necessary to significantly extend the baking times, so that curing is no longer cost-effective and practical. Likewise, higher amounts of catalyst do not lead to the goal, since the properties of the coatings, for example the gloss, are thereby impaired.
DE-OS 2 437 217 describes coating compositions which, according to the examples, can be baked at 120 ° C. in a practical time 30 and produce good coatings. However, our own experiments have shown that the coating agents described here, in contrast to the other products of the prior art mentioned above, e.g. at 170 to 180 ° C, a temperature that is common in practice for certain production processes, cannot be baked without defects in the coating occurring. Because of these defects, which occur at higher temperatures, the binders according to DE-OS 2 437 217 prove to be extremely critical in the case of increased thermal loads, such as can occur, for example, when a strip comes to a standstill during series coating. On the other hand, these coating agents do not have sufficient stability during baking, as e.g. Show coating agent according to DE-PS 2 457 775.
45 It was an object of the invention to develop a coating composition which, provided that the good properties already known for this product class are observed, opens up the possibility of being baked on even at baking temperatures below 130.degree.
50 This object was achieved in that predominant proportions of polyesters containing hexahydroterephthalic acid are used in the coating compositions, these containing 8 to 33 mol percent, preferably 12 to 25 mol percent, of terephthalic acid as the second acid component. 55 The invention relates to liquid coating agents, as specified in claim 1. Preferred embodiments are shown in claims 2 or 3.

Besonders bevorzugt werden bei Zimmertemperatur in Substanz flüssige, mit Alkoholen mit 1 bis 4 Kohlenstoffatomen veretherte Hexamethylolmelaminderivate. partial or complete etherification products of hexa-methylolmelamine, such as tetrakis (methoximethyl) -bis-methylolmelamine, pentakis (methoximethyl) mono-methylol-melamine and hexakis (methoximethyl) -melamine, as well as mixtures of these three substances or hexakis ( butoximethyl) melamine. At room temperature, liquid hexamethylolmelamine derivatives etherified with alcohols having 1 to 4 carbon atoms are particularly preferred.
When using these aminoplasts, the addition of strongly acidic catalysts, such as, for example, p-toluenesulfonic acid, is preferred in order to accelerate curing. In order to obtain varnishes that are more stable in storage, the use of blocked catalysts is particularly preferred.
In a preferred embodiment, relatively high-viscosity, relatively low-viscosity melamine resins, which have been developed especially for low-solvent stoving enamels, are used, which cure with the minor amount of carboxyl-end-bearing polyesters without the addition of catalyst to hard-elastic films, these melamine resins, which are mostly partially etherified with methanol, and which are still have a considerable number of unetherified methylol groups, for example described by L.A. Rutter [Adhäsion 1974 (issue 6), page 178; Group II amino resins].
Of course, the polyesters to be used according to the invention can also be combined with higher molecular weight aminoplasts. As a rule, the polyesters to be used according to the invention are miscible with such aminoplast resins in the claimed mixing ratios without cloudiness. However, if the mixtures of resinous aminoplasts with the polyesters to be used according to the invention lead to turbidity, the compatibility can be improved by reacting polyester and aminoplasts with one another in bulk or in solution in a known manner, it being important to ensure that the reaction does not proceed to Networking is advancing. This can e.g. by briefly heating the mixture or a solution of the two resins, optionally in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. organic or mineral acids.
It is also possible to use the polyesters to be used according to the invention before or during the production of the aminoplast resins from e.g. Urea, benzoguanamine or melamine and aldehydes are added to the batch, although it is of course also possible to also use conventional alkanols to modify the aminoplast resin formed in this way. The methods for producing such amine / aldehyde resins are known. A large number of commercially available aminoplasts are available for combination with the polyesters to be used according to the invention.
To prepare the coating compositions, ester and aminoplast or aminoplast solution are generally first mixed together. The weight ratio of polyester to aminoplast varies according to the invention between 55:45 to 90:10, preferably between 65:35 to 85:15. The optimal ratio of the two components to each other for the intended use of the paints can easily be determined by preliminary tests. It should be borne in mind that increasing the amount of aminoplast often increases the hardness of the coatings and reduces their elasticity, while decreasing the amount of aminoplast reduces their hardness and increases their flexibility.
Depending on the intended use of the coating agent, its viscosity can be adjusted by adding small amounts of conventional lacquer solvents, such as propanol, i-propanol, butanol, ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, ethyl glycol, ethyl glycol acetate, butyl glycol, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone, cyclohexanone, 2- Nitropropane, trichloroethylene or mixtures of various such solvents can be lowered. It is also possible and, for economic reasons, possibly advisable to use more or less large amounts of less polar solvents, such as xylene, higher-boiling aromatic compounds, or aliphatic hydrocarbon mixtures, e.g. Lackbenzine, to be used. The amount of these less polar solvents added can be chosen as desired within the scope of the solubility of the polyesters used according to the invention and their compatibility with the aminoplasts 10 used. According to the invention, generally no more than 30 percent by weight of solvent is used in the coating compositions.
In addition to larger amounts of pigment, the coating compositions according to the invention can contain the usual additives and auxiliaries, in particular leveling agents and additionally other binders, such as e.g. Epoxy resins and hydroxyl group-containing silicone resins.
The binder / pigment ratio can be determined by the intended use of the coating. The binders are generally pigmented in a ratio of 1: 0.3 to 1: 1 when they are used to produce car topcoats or industrial paints. Even with a binder / pigment ratio of 1: 1.1 to 1: 1.3, as is customary in packaging coating or coil coating 25, the coatings show unusually good properties. The coating agent according to the invention can also have even higher pigment contents, such as those e.g. are common in the manufacture of primers.
The coating agent obtained can be carried out in the conventional manner, for example by brushing, spraying, dipping or rolling - cold, warm or hot - applied and in general at temperatures between 100 and 250 ° C., preferably between 110 and 200 ° C. and in particular between 120 and 180 ° C. When 35 almost completely etherified hexamethylolmelamine derivatives are used, an acid catalyst, such as e.g. p-Toluenesulfonic acid added. Since the use of such strongly acidic catalysts can increase the viscosity of the coating agents even at room temperature, it is advisable to use blocked catalysts which only develop their catalytic activity at higher temperatures. For reasons of improved storage stability and better electrostatic processability, the use of blocked acids is preferred, as described in DE-AS 2 345 114 or DE-PS 2 356 768. When using the more reactive aminoplasts, curing is preferably carried out without the addition of a catalyst.
The coatings according to the invention have an abundance of 50 good properties. They are high-gloss, easy to pigment and adhere very well - especially to metals. In salt spray tests, tropical tests and tests in the Weatherometer, they show excellent corrosion protection and weather resistance. Furthermore, they show good storage stability, especially when using nonionically blocked catalysts or when using more reactive melamine resins. In addition, the systems are characterized by good stability on vertical surfaces during baking.
An outstanding property of the coating compositions according to the invention is the possibility of containing hard-elastic coatings even if the baking temperature is varied over a wide range. The previously known solvent-free or low-solvent polyester / aminoplast binders only give hard-elastic and also overburning-stable coatings if they have been baked at temperatures of> 130 ° C. or> 150 ° C. In the case of the products of the prior art, lower stoving temperatures can also be used in this
In this case, however, the prolongation of the baking time to a time that is not appropriate in practice must be accepted or the amount of catalyst must be increased so much that the quality of the coatings no longer meets the requirements of practice in all areas of application. The coatings according to the invention are able to avoid the disadvantages described. In other words, the coating agent according to the invention has provided the processor with a system in which he can carry out the hardening, both at higher and at lower temperatures, regardless of the type of stoving units present.
Since the coating compositions according to the invention contain little or no organic solvents, they are extremely environmentally friendly, so that the costs for the afterburning can be reduced or even saved. Due to this fact and the good overburning stability, the coating agents according to the invention are particularly suitable for industrial large-scale painting.

Beispiel D Example D
3 moles of ethylene glycol, 1 mole of propanediol (1.2), 1.8 moles of dimethylhexahydroterephthalate and 1.2 moles of dimethyl terephthalate are converted into a polyester according to the described method with a hydroxyl number of 163 mg KOH / g and an acid number of 0.6 mg KOH / g produced corresponding to a molecular weight of 685. The product obtained is partially crystalline at room temperature and cannot be clearly dissolved in paint solvents such as xylene, butyl acetate, n-butanol, ethyl glycol acetate, etc.
Unless otherwise stated, all quantities are based on weight.
