Description
The invention relates to a method for converting poorly soluble quinoline derivatives into a pigment form.
In der DE-AS 1770960 und den DE-OS 2626271, 2638528 und 2706872 werden u.a. schwerlösliche Chinolinderivate der Formel I In DE-AS 1770960 and DE-OS 2626271, 2638528 and 2706872, i.a. poorly soluble quinoline derivatives of the formula I.

Besonders bevor- 35 zugt sind dabei Chinolinderivate der Formel II According to the information in the AS and OS, these compounds are very real pigment dyes. Quinoline derivatives of the formula II are particularly preferred
Führt man die Mahlung des Rohpigments direkt in einem organischen Lösungsmittel durch, z.B. wie es in der DE-OS 2357077, Beispiel 9, beschrieben ist, so erhält man nicht so farbstarke Pigmentformen. problematic because chemical degradation and / or sulfonation can easily occur and the properties of the pigment are thereby negatively influenced. In addition, this method has the disadvantage that a dilute, e.g. 10 to 20% sulfuric acid is produced, which pollutes the wastewater. The pigments thus obtained also have the disadvantage that they are used in paints and plastics, e.g. PVC, only give very weak colors, since the pigment forms obtained in this way are difficult to distribute, especially in plastics. This disadvantage of the high grain hardness when incorporated into plastics also has the pigment forms which are obtained by grinding in a ball mill. The subsequent recrystallization of the crude pigment comminuted by grinding in a ball mill in organic solvent is an additional step which requires the reprocessing of the organic solvent. If the crude pigment is ground directly in an organic solvent, e.g. As described in DE-OS 2357077, Example 9, pigment forms which are not as strong in color are obtained.
It was an object of the present invention to find an easy-to-use, safe and ecologically sound process for the compounds mentioned, by which pigment forms with very high color strength can be obtained while maintaining the excellent pigment properties.

In order for these compounds to be in an optimal form for use as pigments, the raw pigments obtained in the synthesis first have to be converted into a suitable pigment form. According to the information in the 55 DE-AS and DE-OS mentioned, the raw pigments can e.g. by dissolving in concentrated sulfuric acid and removing the solution in water or by grinding, e.g. in a ball mill.
From DE-OS 2357077 it is also known that 60 the octahalophthalimidoquinophthalones can be converted into a pigment form if the crude pigment is ground in the presence or preferably in the absence of grinding aids until the average size of the primary particles is less than 0.5 μm and then the regrind recrystallized in organic liquids65.

The pigments obtained by the process according to the invention give very strong, pure colorations. The pigments are particularly suitable for coloring plastics such as soft PVC, polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene and as spinning dyes. They are very easy to disperse, have very good plasticizing properties and are very lightfast. As pigments for lacquers and paints, they also give very strong and pure colorations with high fastness to overcoating, very good lightfastness and very good

Z is preferably phenylene-1,2, tetrachlorophenylene-1,2, tetrabromophenylene-1,2,1, 2-naphthy-35 len, 2,3-naphthylene, 1,8-naphthylene, 4-chloro- or 4- Bromo-naphthylene-1,8 or 2,2'-biphenylene.
Quinoline derivatives of the formula II are particularly preferred in which R1 is hydrogen or methyl, X is chlorine and Z is tetrachlorophenylene-1,2,1,8-naphthylene, 4-chloro-or 40 4-bromo-1,8-naphthylene.
50 The process is carried out in such a way that the quinoline derivatives of the formula Ia are suspended in water and the suspension is then ground in a high-speed agitator mill until the primary particles have an average size of 0.1 μm 45 and below. The grinding is preferably carried out in the absence of auxiliaries, such as surface-active agents, which act as dispersants. Then the finely ground aqueous suspension can be sieved off the grinding media, the finely divided pigment can be separated off and dried. 50
The quinoline derivatives can be used both in the form of the aqueous press cake obtained in the production and in the dried form. The suspension generally contains between 5 and 50, preferably between 10 and 30 percent by weight, based on the suspension, of 55 quinoline derivatives.
Als schnellaufende Rührwerksmühlen kommen z.B. die in «Farbe und Lack», 71 (1965), Seiten 377 bis 378, und I.e. 75 (1969), Seiten 953 bis 961, und in der DE-PS 1230657 beschriebenen in Betracht. 60 The high-speed agitator mills are e.g. die in "Farbe und Lack", 71 (1965), pages 377 to 378, and I.e. 75 (1969), pages 953 to 961, and described in DE-PS 1230657. 60
Agitator mills in which the agitator has peripheral speeds between 5 and 60, preferably between 5 and 20 m / s are best suited for the method according to the invention.
The grinding media can e.g. made of steel, glass, ceramic 65 or plastic. Quartz sand can also be used as grinding media.
Die Mahlkörper haben zweckmässigerweise eine Grösse The grinding media expediently have a size
(Diameter) between 0.1 and 3 mm, preferably between 0.3 and 1.5 mm.
Plastic beads, e.g. those made of polyamide, especially those made of polystyrene, with a diameter between 0.3 and 1.5 mm are preferred.
When using continuously operating agitator mills, it is advantageous to stir the pigment dispersion well before adding it to the mill; if necessary, the suspensions must be kept homogeneous by stirring. The pigment dispersion can also be expediently comminuted in a suitable mill before the actual grinding and then ground in mills of the type mentioned until the desired high color strength is achieved. The grinding time or the number of passages in continuously operating mills are chosen so that the primary particles have a size of 0.1 [in and below, preferably on average a diameter between 0.02 and 0.1 (in In order to maintain the size, in the case of continuously operating mills it is necessary to let the suspension pass the mill several times, for example 5 to 30 times. The grinding time or the number of passages is related to the color strength. size approaches the values mentioned, the smaller the improvement in color strength that can be achieved by prolonged grinding.
The suspension freed from the grinding media can be filtered, if necessary the suspension is previously flocculated by changing the pH to the acidic range. The filter material can optionally be dried after neutral washing, advantageously under reduced pressure at temperatures between 60 and 100 ° C.
Instead of in a continuously operating agitator mill, the grinding can also be carried out discontinuously in an agitator equipped with a high-speed stirrer. About 0.5 part by volume of grinding media is generally used per part by volume of the apparatus volume, and 0.03 part by weight of pigment is generally added together with about 0.25 part by weight of water. The stated ratios are empirical values which can generally be varied by up to ± 20%. The amount of water is usually determined by the fact that the suspension to be ground must be easy to stir. Different stirring systems can be used; however, a propeller or paddle stirrer will preferably be used. The peripheral speed of the stirrer is generally in the range between 5 and 60 m / s, preferably between 5 and 20 m / s. A particularly good grinding effect is achieved if the ratio of the diameter of the stirrer to the diameter of the apparatus is between 1: 2 to 1: 3, preferably 1: 2.5. The milling time is related to the color strength of the pigment. The desired high color strength is generally achieved after Vi to 8 hours, in most cases after 1 to 5 hours. In general, a pigment with a stronger color is obtained after a longer milling time than after a shorter milling time. The closer the particle size approaches the specified values, the less the improvement in color strength that can be achieved by grinding for longer. After the specified average particle size has been reached, the color strength can practically no longer be improved, or can only be improved very little, by extending the grinding time.
Das in der Suspension enthaltene Pigment kann in der oben ange- In the case of discontinuous grinding, the problem of sedimentation does not arise. The grinding process can generally be carried out at temperatures between room temperature and about 95 ° C. Due to the mechanical friction that occurs during grinding, depending on the grinding time and the insulation of the grinding vessels, the suspension is usually heated to temperatures between 30 and 70 ° C. The pigment contained in the suspension can be

Since a small part of the material to be ground remains adhering to the grinding media, in the case of discontinuous grinding when the grinding media are used for the first time, the yield can be somewhat less than the amount of quinoline derivatives. If the grinding media are used repeatedly, the yield is quantitative.
