REVENDICATIONS

CLAIMS
1. Weighted sailboat, characterized in that its ballast is carried by two load-bearing members, one of which at least is articulated at its lower end on the ballast and which are articulated, at their upper end, on one of the ends of a piece integral with the shell, arranged transversely relative to the median plane of this shell, and protruding laterally outside the profile of the shell, in that the carrying members are adjustable in length, and in that individual actuating means are provided to vary the length of each support member, to move at will and according to the navigation conditions the ballast laterally with respect to the median longitudinal plane of the hull, and vertically.
2. Sailboat according to claim 1, characterized in that the carrying members are telescopic and have, in cross section, a tapered shape.
3. Sailboat according to claim 2, characterized by screw and nut means arranged in each of the carrier members to vary the length of each of these.
4. Sailboat according to claim 3, characterized in that said actuating means are provided to rotate the screw, which is axially fixed in each carrier member, while the corresponding nut is angularly and axially fixed in this carrier member.
5. Sailboat according to claim 2, characterized by hydraulic means disposed in each of the carrier members to vary the length of each of these.
In known weighted sailboats, the ballast occupies a fixed position relative to the hull. The present invention aims to improve the handling of a sailboat during the different navigation conditions by providing the means of moving the ballast, during navigation, transversely with respect to the median longitudinal plane of the hull and, at the same time, of also allow the ballast position to be adjusted vertically relative to the hull. The weighted sailboat according to the invention conforms to claim 1.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, an embodiment of the weighted sailboat according to the invention.
Fig. 1 is a side view with partial cutaway of the sailboat.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on a larger scale of part of FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 is a schematic end view showing how the ballast can be moved vertically in the median plane of the hull.
Fig. 4 is a similar view showing how the ballast can be moved laterally, that is to say transversely relative to the median longitudinal plane of the hull.
Figs. 5 and 6 are two schematic views respectively illustrating the shape of the sailboat upwind with light wind, respectively in the case of the mobile ballast according to FIGS. 1 to 4, and in the case of the classic fixed ballast.
Figs. 7 and 8 are two analogous views in the case of upwind gait with strong wind.
We see in 1 the hull of the sailboat and in 2 its ballast which is carried by two carrying members 3, 4, each articulated at its lower end, in 5, respectively 6, on the ballast 2 and at its upper end 7, respectively 8 , on one of the ends of a beam 9 secured to the shell, arranged transversely relative to the median plane of this shell and projecting laterally outside the profile of the shell, as seen in FIGS. 3 and 4. Preferably, these members have a tapered shape in cross section in order to reduce the resistance to advancement. The support members are each formed by two telescopic parts 10, II, respectively 10 ', 11', making it possible to adjust the length of these support members.
Inside each of the carrier members 3, 4, there is a screw and nut system for varying the length of these members.
The screw, not shown, is axially fixed, but can rotate freely inside each of these support members, while the corresponding nut is axially and angularly fixed relative to the respective support member. In the example shown, there is provided a simple means consisting of a crank 12, respectively 13, to rotate one or the other of the screws in order to move the ballast, as will be indicated, by varying the length of one or both supporting members 3, 4.
In fig. 3, the ballast 2 is shown in the normal position, that is to say in the median plane of the hull, this ballast being in the closest possible position to the hull, that is to say the members 3 and 4 being completely retracted. In this same fig. 3, there is shown in dashed lines the position which the ballast occupies when it is at the lowest while remaining in the median plane of the hull. The retracted position will be useful when it comes to avoiding bottom contact, for example when entering a port.
In fig. 4, the ballast 2 is shown, displaced laterally to the right with respect to the median longitudinal plane of the hull. Of course, by acting on the cranks 13, the ballast can be brought between any desired positions comprised between that in FIG. 4 and the symmetrical position on the other side of the median longitudinal plane of the hull. In practice, provision will be made for the mast (not shown) to rest on the beam 9.
In fig. 5, the direction of a side wind has been shown by the arrow 14. If the shape is close-hauled with a light wind, as shown in FIG. 5, the boat is leeward, because the ballast 2 has been moved laterally, as seen in the figure. In the classic case of a fixed ballast sailboat, the boat will remain substantially vertical, as shown in fig. 6, because the ballast is located in the median longitudinal plane of the hull. Fig. 7 shows what happens in the upwind gait with strong wind. In this case, the ballast 2 is moved laterally in the opposite direction to that shown in FIG. 5 relative to the direction of the wind 14, which has the effect that the boat heels to a minimum, which avoids the strong lateral drift of the boat which is inevitable in the case of a fixed ballast, as seen in fig . 8.
Of course, the actuation of the means for adjusting the length of the support members could take place not simply by means of cranks but, for example, by means of electric motors or by hydraulic means.
It is not necessary that the two load-bearing organs be articulated on the ballast; it suffices that one of them is, the other can be rigidly fixed.
