Abstract

Ozone is produced from air by means of electrical discharges. In order to increase the yield and to decrease the unproductive energy, a cell is employed comprising a gastight outer enclosure (1) and two opposed electrodes (2 and 3) packed internally with dielectric plates (4 and 5) which define a discharge space (14). The thickness td of the dielectric plates is considerably exaggerated in the figure, as is the dimension tg. The dielectric thickness td can vary between 0.1 mm and 25 or even 50 mm in some applications. Similarly, the width tg of the discharge space may be between 0.1 and 50 mm. The air enters the cell via a conduit (10) and the ozone is extracted via a conduit (11). To obtain satisfactory results in practice, the plates (4 and 5) must be made of a material of high dielectric strength, such as glass, capable of withstanding electrical fields of the order of 100 to 1000 kV/cm. <IMAGE>
