Rhodiumverbindungen in Betracht kommen.

Hydroformylation (also known as oxo synthesis) is a known method for the preparation of aldehydes from olefinically unsaturated compounds by reaction with carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of catalysts. A detailed account of the hydroformylation reaction with a review of the literature was given by J. Falbe (Syntheses with Kohienmonoxid, Springer-Verlag, Berlin Heidelberg-New York, 1967).
It has also recently been known that the hydroformylation of certain olefins containing a phenyl radical, namely styrene, α-alkylstyrenes and phenyl vinyl ether, can be directed asymmetrically so that optically active aldehydes are obtained.
So in Chimia 26, 141 (1972) the asymmetric hydroformylation of styrene and α-methylstyrene in the presence of a cobalt catalyst and an optically active compound [(+) (S) -N- (2-hydroxybenzylidene) -a-methylbenzylamine, there as (+) (S) -Na-methylbenzylsalicylaldimine].
From Chemistry Letters 1972, pp. 483-5 and 487-8, the asymmetric hydroformylation of styrene, α-ethylstyrene and phenyl vinyl ether in the presence of rhodium compounds which are linked to chiral phosphines, for example to (+) - diphenylneomenthylphosphine, is complex are bound, known.
According to the literature cited above, the oxo synthesis of optically active aldehydes is carried out at temperatures of 75 to 160 ° C., pressures of 80-100 atm and a CO / H2 ratio of 1: 1.
It has now been found, surprisingly, that the stereospecificity and thus the optical yield of the rhodium-catalyzed hydroformylation of olefinically unsaturated prochiral compounds, and not only those with a phenyl radical, but in general, for example also purely aliphatic, increase significantly if one works in the presence of an optically active organic compound at low temperature and low carbon monoxide partial pressure.
The present invention accordingly provides an improved process for the preparation of optically active aldehydes by hydroformylation of olefinically unsaturated prochiral compounds using a rhodium catalyst, which is characterized in that it is carried out in the presence of an optically active organic compound at low temperature and low carbon monoxide partial pressure.
According to the invention, suitable optically active organic compounds are those which contain an element of main group 5 of the periodic table, especially nitrogen and phosphorus compounds, for example optically active amines, imines, phosphines or phosphites, preferably phosphites and especially diphosphino compounds.
Suitable diphosphino compounds are, for example, those whose phosphorus atoms are trisubstituted, in particular those whose phosphino groups are in the 1,4-position to one another and in which preferably at least two adjacent carbon atoms connecting the two phosphino groups are members of a carbo or heterocyclic, saturated or unsaturated ring system, such as, for example, optically active compounds of the formula
EMI1.1
wherein the radicals denoted by R1-R6 are independently hydrogen, C1¯6-alkyl (preferably methyl) or phenyl.
Optically active diphosphino compounds of the general formula I in which R1 = R2 = hydrogen or methyl and R3 = R4 = R5 = R6 = phenyl, i.e., R6 = phenyl, are particularly preferred. G. 4,5-bis- (diphenylphosphinomethyl) -1,3-dioxolane (A) and 2,2-dimethyl-4,5-bis- (diphenylphosphinomethyl) -1,3dioxolane (B).
It goes without saying that the asymmetric hydroformylation is only accessible to those olefinically unsaturated compounds which are able to form an asymmetric carbon atom through the addition of hydrogen and carbon monoxide (so-called prochiral compounds). All those compounds are therefore not suitable for an asymmetric hydroformylation whose reacting, olefinically unsaturated carbon atoms already have identical substituents; H. Compounds of the type (Rt) 2C = C (R2) 2, which include, for example, ethylene itself or cyclohexene.
The olefinically unsaturated, prochiral compounds accessible to asymmetric hydroformylation can either be terminal olefins of the types

as about internal olefins of the types
EMI1.3
act, where in the formulas II-V R1, R2, R3 and R4 represent groups which can be cyclic and / or acyclic in nature, with the restriction that in the compounds III and V R1 may not be identical to R2.
Cyclic groups can optionally be substituted by one or more further radicals and can be saturated or unsaturated, aromatic, alicyclic or heterocyclic; they can be monocyclic or polycyclic, both condensed and non-condensed systems being suitable as the latter. Acyclic groups can be saturated or unsaturated, straight or branched chain and optionally by one or more functional radicals, especially by oxygen or nitrogen functions, eg. B. amino groups, especially amino groups substituted by acyl radicals, can be substituted and bonded via carbon or heteroatoms. Furthermore, the substituents R1 and R2 or
R3 and R4 together with the carbon atom to which they are attached represent a cyclic radical which optionally contains one or more heteroatoms and / or can be substituted by hydrocarbon radicals or functional groups. Finally, however, the substituents R1 and R3 or R1 and R4 or
R2 and R3 or R4 together with the two carbon atoms connecting them form cyclic radicals of the type described above, whereby in all these cases the cyclic system formed must be such that in the course of the hydroformylation a chiral center on at least one of the originally olefinically unsaturated ones C atoms can arise.
Examples of prochiral olefinically unsaturated starting compounds of the formulas II-V suitable for the purposes of the present invention are l-alkenes such as l-butene, l-pentene, 3-methyl-l-butene, 1-heptene, l-octene, styrene , a- and P-alkylstyrenes such as a- and P-methyl- or ethyl-styrene, allyl benzene, N, N-dialkanoyl-vinylamines such as N, N-diacetyl-vinyl amine, N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone, N- Vinyl succinimide, 2,6-dimethyl-1,5-heptadiene, 2,6-dimethyl-6-hydroxy-1 -heptene,
2-butene, N-styryl-succinimide, N-acetyl-styrylamine, N, N-di acetyl-styrylamine or 1-ethyl-2-methyl-1-cyclohexene.
The compounds which are known to be olefinically unsaturated from the non-asymmetrically induced hydroformylation can be used as suitable rhodium catalysts
Rhodium compounds come into consideration. Above all, rhodium hydrocarbonyl should be mentioned here, which is able to take the place of CO as ligands through a number of compounds, in particular through phosphines, in its
Effectiveness can be changed greatly. In the process according to the invention, complex rhodium compounds have the general formula
RhH (CO) (tert-phosphine) 3 VI, preferably RhH (CO) (P (C6Hs) 3) 3, has proven particularly suitable.
While one embodiment of the invention
The reaction is characterized in that a rhodium catalyst which contains no chiral ligand and a chiral organic compound are used in the reaction. Another embodiment can initially be one
Rhodium compound which contains a chiral ligand of the type listed above, e.g. B. RhCl (CO) (-) - 2.2
Dimethyl-4,5-bis- (diphenylphosphinomethyl) -1,3-dioxolane), and these, either alone or, preferably, in the presence of an excess of the corresponding chiral organic compound, are used in the reaction.
The catalyst concentration, based on the substrate, is within the range customary in normal hydroformylation, for example between 0.01 and 5.0 mol%, preferably between 0.1 and 0.5 mol%.
The separation and recovery of the catalyst, which is particularly important in the industrial application of the oxo process, can be carried out in a manner known per se.
Suitable solvents or thinning agents for the hydroformylation reaction according to the invention are all compounds which are known to be usable in the customary process, i.e. aliphatic, cycloaliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, aliphatic, cyclic and aromatic anther, aliphatic alcohols, nitriles, carboxylic anhydrides, ketones, esters, Lactones, lactams, orthoesters and water. As is often the case, the reaction product itself or a high-boiling residue can be recycled and used as a thinning agent.
The low temperatures used in connection with the present invention can be between 0 and 100, preferably in the range from 20-60, the most favorable temperature in the individual case depending on the compounds to be hydroformylated and on the other reaction parameters, such as the CO- and H2 partial pressure or the type of catalyst.
The partial pressure of the carbon monoxide can be between 0.1 and 20 at, but should not exceed 5 at if possible.
If the CO partial pressure is reduced, the optical yield generally increases considerably, largely independently of the catalyst system used. In the hydroformylation of styrene carried out according to the invention in the presence of a rhodium catalyst of the formula VI, an increase in the optical yield from 7 to about 20% was observed, for example, as a result of the lowering of the CO partial pressure from 40 to 0.1 atm.
The grass of the H2 partial pressure is not of decisive influence; it can be greater or less than the CO partial pressure. If the reaction according to the invention is carried out at atmospheric pressure, a CO / H2 partial pressure ratio of 0.1-2: 1 is expediently maintained.
If the sum of the CO and H2 partial pressures is less than 1 at, then it is expedient in the presence of an inert gas, e.g. B. nitrogen or argon, worked so that the sum of all partials is 1 at.
The optically active aldehydes obtainable in accordance with the invention are either themselves valuable end products or can be converted into valuable, optically active alcohols or sirens, for example by reduction or oxidation.
The following examples illustrate the invention. All temperatures are given in "Celsius".
example 1
A mixture of 11.2 g of 1-octene, 100 ml of benzene, 230 mg of RhH (CO) (P (C6H5) 3) 3 and 249 mg of (-) - 2, was placed in a 250 ml glass autoclave fitted with a mechanical stirrer. 2
Dimethyl-4,5-bis (diphenylphosphinomethyl) -1, 3-dioxolane under a pressure of 6 atm of a carbon monoxide-hydrogen mixture (5: 1) heated to 40 C for 27 hours. The reaction mixture was worked up by distillation.
In addition to 0.055 mol of nonanal, 0.006 mol of (-) - 2-methyloctanal, orb25 (1 = 10 cm) = -1.86 "was obtained.
Example 2
A mixture of 11.2 g 1-octene, 100 ml benzene, 230 mg RhH (CO) (P (C6Hs) 3) 3 and 249 mg (-) - 2,2-dimethyl-4,5 bis- (diphenylphosphinomethyl) 1,3-dioxolane was heated to 40 ° C. for 45 hours in a 150 ml oil bath autoclave made of stainless steel under a pressure of 65 atmospheres of a carbon monoxide / hydrogen mixture (5:60). Customary work-up by distillation gave 0.032 mol of nonanal as well as
0.003 moles (-) - 2-methyloctanal, aD25 (1 = 10 cm) = -2.49 ".
Example 3
A mixture of 11.8 g of α-methylstyrene, 80 ml of benzene, 37.3 mg of RhH (CO) (P (C6Hs) 3) 3 and 810 mg of (-) - 2.2- was placed in a 220 ml rotary autoclave. Dimethyl-4,5-bis- (diphenylphosphinomethyl) -1,3-dioxolane heated to 95 ° C. for 73 hours under a pressure of 84 at of an equimolar carbon monoxide-hydrogen mixture. Customary work-up gave, in addition to 0.006 mol of 2-methylpropanal, 0.025 mol of (-) - 3-phenylbutanal, aD25 (1 = 10 cm) = -0.73 ".
Example 4
A homogeneous mixture of hydrogen, carbon monoxide and 1-butene in a molar ratio of 1: 1: 1 was prepared in a 200-liter gasometer. The gasometer was attached to a flask containing a stirred mixture of 0.230 g RhH (CO) (P (C6H5) 3) 3, 0.498 g (-) - 2,2-dimethyl-4,5-bis (diphenylphosphinomethyl ) - 1, 3-dioxolane and 100 ml of mesitylene. After 30 days, after working up in the usual way, 10 ml of a solution consisting of pentanal (92.6%) and (-) - (R) -2-methylbutanal (7.3%), aD25 = -5.27 " (1 = 10 cm).
Example 5
The following tables 1-5 show the results of further hydroformylations carried out according to Examples 1-3 and show the dependence of the conversion and the optical yield on the reaction parameters. RhH (CO) (P (C6H5) 3) 3 was used as the catalyst in all cases, and (-) - 2,2-dimethyl-4,5bis- (diphenylphosphinomethyl) -1,3-dioxolane as the optically active compound (ligand) .
Example 6
0.230 g of RhH (CO) (P (C6H5) 3) 3 and 0.498 g of (-) - 2,2-dimethyl-4,5-bis- (diphenylphosphinomethyl) -1,3-dioXolane were placed in a sulphonation flask given, which was provided with a manometer, temperature measuring and heating device. After the apparatus had been flushed with the reaction gas mixture (CO: H2, 1: 1), 100 ml of benzene were introduced. After the temperature had been set to 25 ", 10.4 g of styrene were added. The pressure in the apparatus was 1 atm and the gas consumption was measured with a gas burette. After 120 hours (conversion 17%), the mixture was distilled off under reduced pressure and at one pressure of 5 torr and a temperature of 65. This gave 11.9% hydratropaldehyde, aD25 = -23.5 "(1 = 10 cm).
