EMI3.1

Weisspigmente in organischen Substanzen).

Use of stilbenyl-1,3,4-oxdiazole derivatives as optical
Lightening agents outside the textile industry
The present invention relates to the use of stilbenyl-1,3,4-oxidiazole derivatives as optical brightening agents outside the textile industry, those of the general formula
EMI1.1
correspond, in which A1 stands for a phenyl, naphthyl, styryl, stilbenyl, thienyl, 2-benzoxazolyl or 2-naphthoxazolyl radical, 3 stands for a phenylene, furylene and thienylene radical, Ax stands for a phenyl or naphthyl radical, R represents hydrogen, halogen, an optionally substituted or functionally modified alkyl, phenyl, carboxyl, sulfo, hydroxyl or amino group,
and in which terminal phenyl nuclei in the general formula can contain one to two substituents R and where m, n and p also represent the values 1 or 2.
Under the above definition, compounds are particularly suitable, the formula

The new stilbenyl-1,3,4-oxdiazole derivatives can be prepared by various methods known per se.
A generally applicable production process consists, for example, in that, for the production of compounds of the formula (1), an acylhydrazine of the formula
EMI3.1
wherein Ax, A1, R, B m, n and p have the meaning given above, subjecting the ring closure reaction to the corresponding 1,3,4-oxdiazole derivative by treatment with excess thionyl chloride at elevated temperatures.
Compounds of the formula (2) are obtained quite analogously by adding an acylhydrazine of the formula
EMI3.2
in which Ay, A2, B, m, n and p have the meaning given above, subjected to the ring closure reaction to give the corresponding 1,3,4-oxdiazole derivative by treatment with excess thionyl chloride at elevated temperatures.
In somewhat more detailed notation, such a production process consists, for example, in the fact that either a stilbene carbonic acid halide, preferably a chloride, of the formula (1.1) with a hydrazide of the formula (12) or a stillbene carbonic acid hydrazide of the formula (13) a carboxylic acid halide (preferably chloride) of the formula (14) is converted to the acylhydrazine of the formula (10) and this is then subjected to ring closure to form 1,3,4; oxiazole. This reaction sequence can be shown schematically as follows:
EMI3.3
EMI4.1
In this way, it is possible to obtain both symmetrically and asymmetrically constructed compounds of the formula (2).
The reaction of the acid halides of the formula (11) and (14) with hydrazine, hydrazine hydrate, salts of hydrazine or the carboxylic acid hydrazides of the formein (12) and (13) to the acylhydrazines of the formula (10) can be carried out in the presence of a tertiary nitrogen base at temperatures of about 50 to 150 0C. It is advisable to use tertiary nitrogen bases with a boiling point that is not too low, preferably those with a boiling point of at least 100 ° C., such as. 3. N, N> diethyl- or N, N-dimethylaniline.
Cyclic tertiary nitrogen bases such as quinoline and especially pyridine bases such as pyridine itself and alkylpyridines with low molecular weight alkyl radicals such as 2-, 3- and 4J-methylpyridine (picolines), ethylpyridines or mixtures of such pyridine bases prove to be particularly advantageous.
Surprisingly, it has been shown that the reaction to the acylhydrazines of the formula (10) in high-boiling, inert, weakly polar ibis non-polar organic solvents, such as 0-dichlorobenzene or chlorobenzene in the presence of the stoichiometrically necessary amount of pyridine bases at about 50 to 150 0C is possible, the subsequent ring closure to 1,3,4-oxdiazole without intermediate separation of the acylhydrazine by dropping in slightly more than the stoichiometrically necessary amounts of thionyl chloride at temperatures between 120 to 220 C, preferably at the boiling point of the reaction mixture very quickly and smoothly can be made.
This possibility was noticeable and could not be foreseen, as, according to general experience, in comparable cases an uncontrollable reaction of the thionyl chloride with the stilbene double bond was to be expected.
The new optical brighteners of the composition described at the outset have a more or less pronounced fluorescence in a dissolved or finely divided state. They can be used for the optical brightening of the most varied of high molecular weight or low molecular weight organic materials or materials containing organic substances outside the textile industry.
For this purpose, the following groups of organic materials should be mentioned, for example, without any limitation being expressed by the following list, insofar as an optical brightening of the same comes into consideration:
1. Synthetic organic high molecular weight materials: a) Polymerization products based on organic compounds containing at least one polymerizable carbon-carbon double bond, d. H.
their homopolymers or copolymers and their aftertreatment products such as crosslinking, grafting or degradation products, polymer blends, etc., for which, for example, may be mentioned:
Polymers based on eC, ß-unsaturated carboxylic acids, in particular acrylic compounds (such as, for example, acrylic esters, acrylic acids, acrylonitrile, acrylamides and their derivatives or their methacrylic analogs), of olefin hydrocarbons (such as, for example, 3. ethylene, propylene, isobutylene , Styrenes, dienes such as butadiene, isoprene, ie also rubbers and rubber-like polymers, also so-called ABS polymers), polymers based on vinyl and vinylidene compounds (such as.
Vinyl esters, vinyl chloride, vinyl sulfonic acid, vinyl ether, vinyl alcohol, vinylidene chloride, vinyl carbazole), of halogenated hydrocarbons (chloroprene, highly halogenated ethylene), of unsaturated aldehydes and ketones (e.g. acrolein, etc.), of allyl compounds, etc., graft polymerization products (e.g. by grafting on vinyl monomers), crosslinking products (for example by means of bifunctional or polyfunctional crosslinkers such as divinylbenzene, polyfunctional allyl compounds or bisacrylic compounds) or by partial degradation (hydrolysis, depolymerization) or modification of reactive groups (e.g. esterification, etherification , Halogenation, self-crosslinking) are available.
b) Other polymerization products such. B. obtainable by ring opening, e.g. B. polyamides of the polycaprolactam type, also formaldehyde * polymers, or Polymers which are available both via polyaddition and Polykon densation such as polyethers, polythioethers, polyacetals, thioplasts.
c) Polycondensation products or precondensates based on bi or polyfunctional compounds with condensable groups, their homo- and mixed condensation products and post-treatment products, for which, for example:
Polyester, saturated (e.g. polyethylene terephthalate) or unsaturated (e.g.
B. maleic acid and dialcohol polycondensates and their crosslinking products with polymerizable vinyl monomers), unbranched and branched (also based on higher alcohols such as 3. alkyd resins), polyamides (eg 3. hexamethylenediamine adipate), maleic resins, melamine resins, phenolic resins (Novolaks), aniline resins, furan resins, carbamide resins, and also their precondensates and similarly built products, polycarbonates, silicone resins, and others.
d) Polyaddition products such as polyurethanes (crosslinked and uncrosslinked), epoxy resins.
II. Semi-synthetic organic materials such as. B.
Cellulose esters or mixed esters (acetate, propionate), nitrocellulose, cellulose ether, regenerated cellulose (viscose, copper ammonia cellulose) or their aftertreatment products, casein plastics.
III. Natural organic materials of animal or vegetable origin, for example based on cellulose or proteins such as bast, jute, hemp, skins and hair, leather, wood masses in fine distribution, natural resins (such as rosin, in particular varnish resins), also rubber, gutta-percha, balata, and their aftertreatment and modification products (e.g.
hardening, crosslinking or grafting), degradation products (e.g. hydrolysis, depolymerization), products obtainable by modifying reactive groups (acylation, halogenation, crosslinking, etc.)
The organic materials in question can be in a wide variety of processing states (raw materials, semi-finished products or finished products) and aggregate states. They can be in the form of the most varied of shaped structures, i. H. so z.
B. predominantly three-dimensional grains such as blocks, plates, profiles, pipes, injection moldings or various workpieces, chips or granules, foams; predominantly two-dimensional bodies such as films, foils, lacquers, tapes, coatings, impregnations and coatings or predominantly one-dimensional bodies such as fibers, flakes, bristles, wires. Said materials can, on the other hand, also be present in unshaped states in the most varied of homogeneous and inhomogeneous forms of distribution and aggregate states, e.g. B. as powder, solutions.
Emulsions, dispersions, latices (examples: lacquer solutions, polymer dispersions), brine, jelly, putty, pastes, waxes, adhesives and leveling compounds, etc.
Fiber materials can, for example, be in the form of endless threads, staple fibers, flocks, nonwovens, felts, wadding, flanking structures, composites, as well as papers and cardboards or paper pulps, etc.
The novel optical brighteners to be used according to the invention can also be added to the materials before or during their deformation. be glued in. For example, they can be added to the molding compound or injection molding cup in the production of films, foils, tapes or moldings, or they can be dissolved, dispersed or otherwise finely distributed in the spinning compound before the threads are spun.
The optical brighteners can also be added to the starting substances, reaction mixtures or intermediate products for the production of fully or semi-synthetic organic materials, i.e. also before or during the chemical reaction, for example in the case of a polycondensation (i.e. also precondensates), in a polymerization (i.e. also prepolymers ) or a polyaddition.
The new optical brighteners can of course also be used wherever organic materials of the type indicated above are combined with organic materials in any form (typical examples: detergents, white pigments in organic substances).
The new optically brightening substances are characterized by particularly good heat resistance, lightfastness and migration resistance.
The amount of the new optical brighteners to be used according to the invention, based on the material to be optically brightened, can vary within wide limits. Even with very small amounts, in certain cases e.g. B. those of 0.001 weight percent, a clear and durable effect can be achieved. However, amounts of up to about 0.5 percent by weight and more can also be used. For most practical purposes, amounts between 0.01 and 0.2 percent by weight are preferably of interest.
The new compounds serving as lightening agents can also be used, for example, as follows: a) As a mixture with dyes or pigments, for example when producing colored films or moldings.
b) In mixtures with so-called carriers, antioxidants, light stabilizers, heat stabilizers, chemical bleaching agents or as an additive to bleaching baths outside the textile industry.
c) In combination with detergents (outside the textile industry). The detergents and brightening agents can be added separately to the wasoh baths to be used. It is also advantageous to use detergents which contain the whitening agents mixed in. Suitable detergents are, for example, soaps, salts of sulfonate detergents, such as. B. of sulfonated benzimidazoles substituted on the 2 carbon atom by higher alkyl radicals, also salts of monocarboxylic acid esters of 4-sulfophthalic acid with higher fatty alcohols, furthermore salts of fatty alcohol sulfonates, alkylarylsulfonic acids or the condensation products of higher fatty acids with aliphatic oxy- or aminesulfonic acids.
Furthermore, non-ionic detergents can be used, e.g. 3. Polyglycol ethers, which are derived from ethylene oxide and higher fatty alcohols, alkylphenols or fatty amines.
d) In combination with polymeric carrier materials (polymerization, polycondensation or polyaddition products), in which the brighteners are incorporated in dissolved or dispersed form, if appropriate, in addition to other substances, e.g. B. for coating, impregnating or binding agents (solutions, dispersions, emulsions) for nonwovens, paper or leather.
e) As additives to a wide variety of industrial products in order to make them more marketable or to avoid disadvantages in serviceability, for example as an additive to glues, adhesives, paints, etc.
f) In combination with other optical brightening agents (e.g. for the purpose of changing nuances).
The compounds of the formula given at the beginning can also be used as scintillators for various purposes of the photographic nature, such as for electrophotographic reproduction or for supersensitization.
If the whitening process is combined with other treatment or refinement methods, the combined treatment is advantageously carried out with the help of suitable permanent preparations. Such preparations are characterized in that they contain optically brightening compounds of the general formula given at the outset such as dispersants, detergents, carriers, dyes, pigments, etc.

example 1
100 g of polyester granules made from terephthalic acid äthylenglykol¯Polyester are intimately mixed with 0.05 g of the compound of formula (28) and melted at 285 ° C. while stirring. After piecing the spinning mass through customary spinnerets and drawing, highly lightened polyester fibers are obtained.
The compound of the formula (28) can also be added to the starting materials before or during the polycondensation to give the polyester.
Good lightening effects are also achieved if, instead of the compound of the formula 128), the compound of the formulas (18), (23), (25), (26), (27), l (32), (34), ( 35), (36), (43), (47), (48), (49), (51), (52), (53), (54), (55), (60), (64) , (65), (66), (68), (70), (72) or (73) are used.
Example 2
10,000 g of a polyamide in the form of a sonitzel produced in a known manner from hexamethylenediamine adipate are mixed with 30 g of titanium dioxide rutile modification) and 5 g of one of the compounds of the formula t (16), l (18), (23), (24), 25), (26), (27), (28), (29), (31), (32), (33), (34), (35), (36), (39), (42) , (52), (53), (54), (55), (56), (57), (60), (61), (62), (64), (65), (66), ( 67),; (68), (69), (71), (72) or (73) mixed in a roller container for 12 hours.
The chips treated in this way are melted in a kettle heated to 300 to 310 ° C. with oil or diphenyl vapor, after the atmospheric oxygen has been displaced by water vapor, and stirred for half an hour. The melt is then pressed out through a spinneret under a nitrogen pressure of 5 atmospheres and the cooled filament spun in this way is wound onto a spinning bobbin. The resulting threads show an excellent peeling effect of good wash and lightfastness.
If, instead of a polyamide made from hexamethylene diamine adipate, a polyamide made from e-caprolactam is used, similarly good results are obtained.
Example 3
100 g of polypropylene fiber grade are intimately mixed with 0.08 g of the compound of formula 1 (33) and melted at 280 to 290 ° C. with stirring. The melt is spun out and drawn through conventional spinnerets according to a known melt spinning process. Strongly lightened polypropylene fibers are obtained.
If the compounds of the formulas (29), (42), (52), (54), (55), (65), (70) or (72) are used instead of the compound of the formula (33), good ones are also obtained Lightening effects.
