Process for the polymerization of trioxane The subject of the present invention is a process for the polymerization of trioxane.
The process according to the invention is characterized in that this polymerization is carried out in the presence of a catalytic amount of antimony pentafluoride or of a complex thereof.
It should be understood that the process according to the invention applies not only to the homopolymerization of trioxane but also to the copolymerization of trioxane with minor amounts of one or more other compounds which are known to copolymerize. with trioxane in the presence of an electrophilic catalyst.
The catalysts which can be used in the process according to the invention comprise antimony pentafluoride and its coordination and ionic complexes. Complexes with organic compounds in which the donor atom is oxygen or sulfur are examples of suitable catalysts. Among these, mention may be made of complexes with alcohols, phenols, acids, ethers, acid anhydrides, ketones. esters. aldehydes. dialkyl sulfides and mercaptans.
More specifically, there may be mentioned the complexes of antimony pentafluoride with methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol, triphenylmethyl alcohol, methyl acetate, butyl acetate, l 'phenyl acetate, benzoic acid, acetic acid. acetic anhydride, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone. dimethyl ether, diethyl ether, methylphenyl ether, phenol, acetaldehyde, dimethyl sulfide, diethyl sulfide and ethyl mercaptan.
Complexes of antimony pentafluoride with alkyl cyanides, for example methyl cyanide and ethyl cyanide, are also suitable as catalysts for the process according to the invention, as are ionic complexes of pentafluoride d. antimony with alkyl halides. aralkyl, aryl and acyl. For example, when antimony pentafluoride is dissolved in certain halogenated paraffins, for example 1,1,2-trichloro-1,2,2-trifluoro-ethane, and left to stand, a solvated complex is formed which can be used as a polymerization catalyst.
This process is preferably carried out with the minimum of humidity under anhydrous conditions. It can be carried out in the absence of a diluent, although it may be advantageous to carry out the polymerization in an inert liquid medium which may or may not dissolve the monomers under the conditions of the polymerization. Saturated aliphatic and cycloaliphatic hydrocarbons are suitable solvents. Cyclohexane is particularly suitable. It is often advantageous to mix the monomer, or the comonomers in the case of copolymerization, with an inert liquid medium, then to add the catalyst in solution in an identical or different inert medium.
For example, antimony pentafluoride is soluble in fluorinated hydrocarbons in Arcton and in Freons. and a solution of antimony pentafluoride in either of these solvents can be added to the monomer or monomers mixed) to, or in solution in, cyclohexane. Many complexes of antimony pentafluoride are soluble in nitroparaffins, and the addition of a solution of the complex in, for example nitroethane or nitropropane, to a solution or suspension of the monomer (s) in cyclohexane is therefore another simple way of implementing the method according to the invention.
Some of the complexes of antimony pentafluoride, for example diethyl etherate, may not be soluble in the inert liquid medium used for the polymerization. and can form droplets in this medium. It is observed that the polymer forms on the surface of these droplets, so that only the surface of these droplets is catalytically active. because a polymer skin forms. Therefore, the proportion of catalyst required is higher than when the catalyst is soluble in the inert liquid medium.
Stirring is also very important when using these insoluble catalysts, as small droplets of catalyst are obviously more effective than large droplets. These difficulties are much less marked if the complex used is soluble in nitroethane or nitropropane and is added to the monomer-inert medium mixture in solution in nitroethane or nitropropane.
The reaction temperature is preferably between 0 and 1000 C, and varies depending on the reagents, the solvent. etc. If desired, the reaction can be carried out under a dry inert atmosphere, for example nitrogen or carbon dioxide. In some cases it is appropriate to work under pressure.
The catalyst used in the process according to the invention can be easily separated from the polymer formed, for example by washing, grinding or stirring the polymer in the presence of solvents or of agents for neutralizing the catalysts. Removal of the catalyst is particularly efficient by treatment with a basic substance, such as an amine or ammonia. After this treatment. the polymer is washed thoroughly to remove any residue and dried.
Stabilizers, antioxidants and pigments can be incorporated into the polymers formed by the process according to the invention. ultraviolet light absorbing agents and the like commonly used as additives for polymer compositions. Polymers can also be stabilized by treating them with compounds which react with the free end groups. For example, the terminal groups can be acetylated by reaction with acetic acid or anhydride.
It is already known to polymerize trioxane, with or without a copolymerizable monomer, and to polymerize certain other ethers and cyclic acetals in the presence of an electrophilic catalyst, for example of boron trifluoride, of certain of its complexes, of standard chloride. nique, ferric chloride, certain other inorganic fluorides and oxonium salts. It has been found that, in the case of the polymerization of trioxane, the catalysts used according to the invention have certain advantages over the catalysts used hitherto.
For example, the rate of polymerization is much higher and a lower catalyst concentration can be employed to obtain percentage yields of equivalent polymers. In addition, it has been found that these catalysts make it possible to produce a homopolymer of trioxane, the molecular weight of which is more than double that obtained by means of known catalysts.
The polymers produced by the process according to the invention are particularly useful for injection, compression and extrusion molding.
In the following examples, the inherent viscosity was determined at 60 ° C. on a 0.5% solution of the polymer in p-chlorophenol containing 2% α; -pinene as stabilizer.
Example 1: A mixture of 28 g of trioxane, freshly distilled over stearylamine and calcium hydride, and 56 g of dry cyclohexane is stirred in a flask fitted with a condenser and the mixture is maintained at 600 ° C. in a water bath. 0.00336 g of antimony pentafluoride are added as a 1% solution in 1,1,2-trichloro-1,2,2-trifluoroethane and polymer appears after 10 sec. After one hour, the product is collected by filtration and washed with 200 ml of acetone, then with 200 ml of water. Then, it is heated to 850 C in about 250 ml of 3% ammonia for 5 minutes, then it is collected again on a filter, washed thoroughly with water and acetone and dried. in a vacuum oven.
There is thus obtained 10 g of a white polymer having an inherent viscosity of 2.22.
Example 2: 27 g of trioxane, freshly distilled over stearylamine and calcium hydride, are stirred with 54 g of dry cyclohexane and 0.81 g of styrene in a flask fitted with a condenser and the mixture is maintained at 60 ° C. in a water bath. 0.5 g of antimony pentafluoride diethyl etherate is added and the polymer appears after 5 sec. After 1 hour, the product is collected by filtration and treated as described in Example 1. 19 g of a white polymer having an inherent viscosity of 0.78 are obtained.
Example 3: In a reaction vessel, 50g of trioxane (freshly distilled over stearylamine and calcium hydride), 100 g of cyclohexane and 1.5 g of dioxolane (distilled on calcium hydride). The mixture is maintained at 600 ° C. and stirred vigorously. 0.0075 g of antimony pentafluoride diethyl etherate, as a 25% solution in nitroethane, is injected into the mixture and polymerization begins rapidly. After 1 1/2 hours, the reaction is terminated by adding a small amount of acetone and the product is suspended and homogenized by stirring at high speed in a larger amount of acetone, after which it is filtered.
