The invention relates to a device for feeding a continuous casting mold, consisting of a nozzle surrounded by refractory material which can be pressed against a horizontal or inclined mold, a flexible seal being interposed between the nozzle and the flask and protected from direct contact with the molten metal,
characterized by a purge (15) in the open air allowing the evacuation of the air contained in the mold during the first filling of the latter. In what follows, an embodiment of the subject of the invention is described in detail and by way of example, with reference to the appended drawing.
Fig. 1 is a sectional view of this embodiment, FIG. 2 is a sectional view along the line <B> 11-11 of </B> in FIG. 1, and the fi-. 3 is an elevational view.
The device shown consists of a nozzle (1) of refractory material supplied by its upper part of molten metal. The nozzle (1) has a hydrodynamic shape and dimensions which promote good flow by gravity towards an ingot mold (4).
The nozzle (1) is surrounded by insulating material (2), the whole being mounted in a metal casing (3). The carcass (3) can be movable, on slides (11) fixed to the frame (13), in the longitudinal direction of the mold for the purpose of oscillation or vibration of the mold.
A safety seal (5) made of flexible and heat-resistant material, such as asbestos, is interposed between the nozzle and the mold. This seal is protected from prolonged contact with the molten material by a shoulder of the nozzle which serves as its housing and which penetrates with a small clearance into the. ingot mold.
The molten material, on entering the nozzle-ingot mold game, solidifies and thus ensures the sealing and protection of the safety seal. This seal also serves as an elastic support in the event of vibration of the mold.
The nozzle is supported against the mold by means of the rod (7) and the screw (8) fitted with a locking nut (9). The rod (7) is articulated on the body of the mold (14) at (12).
The entire device is guided and centered with the body of the mold by means of guide pieces (6), the spacing of which can be variable, which makes it possible to use the carcass for: several types or dimensions of. ingot molds. The nozzle has, at the location of the seal, on the upper side, a groove (15) communicating with the free air which serves as:
purge for the air pocket (16) which forms in the upper part of .la, ingot mold when it is filled with the molten material. This small-sized groove closes after filling the mold when the molten material enters and solidifies.
The level of molten metal in the nozzle is maintained at a value greater than the geodesic height of the mold by the rate of extraction of the cast product or by the rate of supply of molten metal.
When the supply of molten metal is interrupted for a certain time, the level of said material is allowed to reach a lower value: such that, while having the nozzle at least partially filled, it is possible to stop the extraction of the gas. product cast in the ingot mold the time necessary for 'the solidification of the end thereof which is located in the nozzle, and restart the extraction without said end remaining hooked in the nozzle.
The purpose of this last operation is to avoid any flow from the central part of the cast product which may be in the liquid or pasty state when it leaves the mold completely, and to allow several consecutive charges to be poured by stopping the extraction of the cast product for the time necessary to change the container which supplies the nozzle.
The different levels, normal operation and shutdown, are shown by way of example in fig. 1, as a function of the inclination of the nozzle and of the mold, and as a function of the shape of the nozzle.
The level of molten metal in the. Nozzle will be chosen in such a way that it is at least sufficient to ensure the desired flow rate as a function of the minimum section (neck) of the nozzle and as a function of the speed of extraction of the cast product.
