Chem. Soc. 60, 309-319 (1938) be stimmt.

Process for the production of dichloromonolefins 1 The main patent relates to a process for the chlorination or bromination of hydrocarbons, such as ethylene, in which the hydrocarbons in the gas phase with a preparation containing copper chloride or copper bromide and one or more alkali metal chloride (e ) or bromide (s) are treated, and which is characterized in that a preparation is used which additionally contains one or more chloride (s) or bromide (s) of the rare earth metals. This chloride mixture can be applied to a carrier which can consist of silicon dioxide, for example.
Preferably silicon dioxide with a specific surface area of at least 200 m 2 / g and an average pore diameter of at least 60 Å is used. Indeed, such a carrier has been found to be very suitable for the application of the method to a wide variety of hydrocarbons including diolefins. It has now been found, however, that better yields can be obtained if conjugated diolefins are to be chlorinated in such a way that exclusively or at least at least mainly dichloro-monolefins are formed as reaction products.
According to the usual definition, which also applies here, conjugated diolefins are those diolefins which have the group in their molecule
EMI0001.0004
exhibit. It is clear that such compounds can react with chlorine in different ways. Both substituting and additive chlorination can occur, and in addition a. Cracking or polymerization take place. However, it is often interesting to add only two chlorine atoms and to switch off all other reactions as far as possible.
The chlorine atoms can then be added in the following three ways: 2 a) addition to the double bond between the carbon atoms 1 and 2, the atoms 3 and 4 not being attacked; b) addition to carbon atoms 3 and 4, whereby atoms 1 and 2 are not attacked; c) Addition to carbon atoms 1 and 4, whereby the original double bonds disappear and a new double bond appears between atoms 2 and 3.
As a rule, all three reactions will take place together.
The present invention relates to a special embodiment of the process according to the main patent, which is particularly suitable for converting conjugated diolefins into dichloro-monolefins. The method according to the invention is characterized in that a carrier material is used for the chloride mixture which has a specific surface area of 0.1 to 40 m2 / g and an average pore diameter of at least 300 Å, preferably 500 to 10,000 Å.
Although the specific surface area and the average pore diameter have to be considered as the main factors that influence the degree of conversion of the starting material and the selectivity of the reaction, the chemical nature of the carrier material also has a certain influence. Silicon dioxide and aluminum oxide are particularly suitable.
Aluminum oxide in the so-called a-form, as it is commercially available, can easily meet the conditions which, according to the invention, are to be met with regard to the specific surface area and the average pore size.
If, however, commercially available aluminum oxide is found to be unsuitable due to its specific surface area being too large, this fact can be remedied by one or more pretreatments, in particular heat treatments. In general, a heat treatment is effective, which is carried out either in a vacuum or in a gas atmosphere, for example in steam, air and / or nitrogen, for 2 to 24 hours at temperatures from 1100 to 1700 ° C., in particular from 1200 to 1500 ° C.
Such pretreatment is generally necessary when γ-aluminum oxide is used. Particularly suitable for the process according to the invention is? -Alumina, such as. it is obtained by sintering powdered aluminum oxide.
The specific surface area of silica can be lowered in a similar manner by heat treatment, but in this case the preferred temperatures are. lower, namely from 600 to 1100 C, in particular from 700 to 1000 C.
Of course, the specific surface of the carrier material, even if it is already below 40 m2 / g, can be reduced by one or more treatments, if desired. In general, in the process according to the invention, carrier materials with a specific surface area of 1 to 10 m 2 / g are preferred.
It is often desirable to clean the support materials to remove any undesirable contaminants. Washing with concentrated, aqueous solutions of a mineral acid, such as hydrochloric acid, is often a suitable method. This cleaning can take place either after or preferably before the treatment to reduce the specific surface, if the latter treatment is necessary.
Before being used in the process according to the invention, the finished catalyst, which consists of the chloride mixture applied to the carrier, is usually advantageously treated with chlorine or hydrogen chloride, either in solution or in the gas phase, or with a gas mixture containing hydrogen chloride and oxygen and, if possible, also contains chlorine and / or one or more inert gases such as nitrogen. In general, preference is given to a mixture which contains hydrogen chloride and oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas, such as air.
This pretreatment is preferably carried out at a temperature that exceeds that during the chlorination, for example at a temperature of 250 to 400 C. The pretreatment is useful because it promotes the homogenization of the chloride mixture and the flowability of the finished catalyst particles, which are then used in the method according to the invention.
It is admitted that the Belgian patent specification No. 616 762, which also relates to a process for chlorinating olefins in the presence of copper-containing mixtures, the use of aluminum oxide, which is previously subjected to heating to 600 to 1400 C, as Disclosed carrier material for the copper-containing mixtures. However, this patent contains no specific reference to diolefins, and therefore it does not discuss the specific problems of the selective chlorination of diolefins to dichloromonolefins either.
In addition, the average pore diameters used, if any, do not meet the conditions of the present invention. It is known that the average pore diameter of the aluminum oxides used as the starting material for the carrier are below 300 Å. Although the specific surface area is reduced by the heat treatment described in Belgian patent specification number 616 762 and can then be well within the range of the present invention, the average pore diameter is not changed by this treatment and therefore remains unusually low.
The process according to the invention offers the advantage that diolefins can be converted into the desired dichloromonolefins with high selectivity, that is to say with a high yield of the latter and low yields of by-products with respect to the converted diolefins. In addition, the degree of conversion of the diolefins used as starting material, that is to say the proportion of the total amount introduced into the reaction space which takes part in the reaction, is also very satisfactory. The degree of conversion can even be so high that the recirculation of unconverted diolefin is no longer economically necessary. This of course leads to a simplification of the operation and the equipment.
In addition to the special choice of carrier material, the advantageous chlorination conditions are generally the same as those already indicated in the main patent. However, the copper contents can go down to 0.1% by weight, calculated as the metal content, of the total mixture, although the copper contents of 1 to 20% by weight described in the main patent are generally preferred.
The) group of rare earths in turn consists of the 15 elements with the atomic numbers 57-71, the so-called lanthanides. Particularly preferred among the lanthanides are cerium and the elements with the numbers 59-64, either alone or as a technical mixture of lanthanides, which is commercially available as didymium, although this is more complicated than the didymium defined in the textbooks. This technical didymium is obtained in the form of its oxide as a by-product in the processing of monazite sand to cerium. An analysis of such a didymium oxide gives 45% by weight La2O3, 38% by weight Nd2O3, 11% by weight Pr6O11, 4% by weight Sm2O3 and various other metal oxides.
Potassium chloride is again preferred among the alkali chlorides, although sodium and lithium chloride, for example, give very good results. If a low melting point of the composition is desired, it is convenient to use mixtures of alkali chlorides.
The ratio of copper to rare earths can in turn fluctuate within wide limits. This ratio can generally be between 3: 1 and 1: 3 parts by weight copper to rare earth, both calculated as metals. However, approximately equal parts by weight of copper and rare earth, both calculated as metals, are preferred.
According to the main patent, suitable values for the atomic ratio are. between alkali metal and copper in general between 0.3 and 3, preferably between 0.8 and 1.2. In the method of the present invention, however, these preferred atomic ratios are between 1.5 and 3.0.
According to the main patent, the preferred halogenation temperatures are 175 to 300 ° C. Particularly suitable chlorination temperatures for the process according to the invention are 230 to 320 ° C., 260 to 300 ° C. being generally preferred.
As stated in the description of the main patent, the method according to the invention is also advantageously suitable for fluid bed technology. The catalyst, which contains the carrier and the chloride mixture, can be kept flowing or in a fluidized bed by means of ascending currents of the gases which are to come into contact with the copper chloride.
Particularly preferred are catalysts in finely divided form, that is, those whose particle sizes are 10 to 500 microns, the preferred particle size being about 35 to about 300 microns with an average of 100 to 120 microns.
During the chlorination process according to the main patent, the copper (II) chloride, which must be present in the chloride mixture at the beginning of the reaction, is reduced to copper (I) chloride. This is also the case when carrying out the method according to the invention. In order to restore the copper (II) chloride after the catalyst has been used, the following can be used: the chloride mixture on the carrier can be brought into contact with chlorine or a gas containing chlorine. A mixture of hydrogen chloride and oxygen or a gas containing oxygen, such as air, can also be used for this purpose.
If desired, the oxygen or the gas containing it and the hydrogen chloride can be separated and passed successively over the chloride mixture, which has to be regenerated. In this case, copper oxychloride is formed first, which is then converted into copper (II) chloride in a second stage by means of hydrogen chloride. In the one-step conversion of copper (I) chloride to copper (II) chloride, it is preferred to use mixtures which contain oxygen and hydrogen chloride in approximately stoichiometric amounts, although it is permissible to deviate widely from this ratio.
The regeneration temperature can vary within a wide range, with 200 to 400 C generally being preferred, regardless of the regeneration medium.
As a rule, the regeneration of the copper (I) to form the copper (II) chloride can take place at the same time as the chlorination of the diolefin. In this case, a gas mixture is allowed to flow through the reaction space which contains not only the diolefin to be chlorinated, but also one or more regenerants, such as. B. chlorine and / or a mixture of oxygen and hydrogen chloride. Of course, diluents, such as nitrogen, can also be present in this gas mixture. The chlorination and regeneration can be controlled in this way by choosing the given amounts of the agents which chlorinate and regenerate in such a way that the ratio of copper (1) to copper (II) chloride remains practically constant.
Although the starting material for the process according to the invention can be a mixture of diolefins, it is generally preferred to use a single olefin in order to avoid unnecessary complications in the product mixture.
Among the diolefins which can be used as a starting material for the chlorination process of the present invention, those having 4 or 5 carbon atoms are of particular practical interest. It is primarily 1,3-pentadiene and isoprene, but 1,3-butadiene can very well be considered, since the 3,4-dichlorobutene-1 and 1,4-dichlorobutene-2 prepared from it according to the invention are very valuable fully as intermediates, the first for the manufacture of chloroprene and the second for the manufacture of hexamethylenediamine or adipic acid. The chlorination process according to the invention can be carried out at atmospheric pressure, but lower or higher pressures are also possible.
Example 1.
The following materials were used as carriers in the process according to the invention: A. α-Al2O3: This was a commercial product from Carborundum Cy., USA; the specific surface area was less than 5 m2 / g and the average pore diameter was 1600 A.
B. SiO2: It was also a commercial product, namely the Johns-Manville company, USA, which is sold under the name Celite 410; the specific surface area was less than 5 m2 / g and the average pore diameter was over 4000 A.
These two supports were washed with 4N aqueous hydrochloric acid to remove small amounts of iron, aluminum and sodium before being coated with a chloride mixture in the manner given below.
For comparison purposes, the following three carrier materials, which do not meet the requirements of the present invention, were also used: C. Silica gel: Manufactured in the laboratory; the specific surface area was 285 m2 / g and the average pore diameter 140 A.
D. Silica gel: Manufactured in the laboratory; the specific surface area was 425 m2 / g and the average pore diameter 70 A.
E. 7-A1203: commercial product from Pechiney, France; the specific surface area was 141 m2 / g and the average pore diameter 67 A.
These supports were not washed because they only contained traces of impurities.
The specific surfaces of the said carriers were. according to the method of Brunauer, Emmett and Teller, J. Am. Chem. Soc. 60, 309-319 (1938).
The average pore diameter can be calculated from the total pore volume, which is equal to the number of milliliters of water that can be added per gram of the carrier with vigorous stirring until the particles of the carrier material stick together. The average pore diameter in A was derived from the pore volume and the specific surface area using the following formula:
EMI0003.0057
All supports were dried at 500 ° C. for two hours.
Heating to such relatively low temperatures does not affect the specific surface area, so it can be assumed that the above values have not been changed. The same applies to the values for the. average pore diameter. After cooling to room temperature: the carriers were mixed with an aqueous solution of the chlorides of copper, commercially available didymium and potassium, using enough solution so that it was just absorbed by the carrier.
The commercially available didymium had the composition given above, for example. With constant stirring, the water was evaporated from the impregnated carrier at a temperature close to the boiling point. This was followed by further drying by heating in a stream of air for two hours, the temperature initially being 120.degree. C. and then gradually increasing to 250.degree.
The concentrations of the aqueous chloride solutions were chosen so that the amounts of copper, didymium and potassium, calculated as metals, were 2.5, 2.5 and 1.55 percent by weight, based on the total weight of the catalyst.
The catalysts thus obtained were treated for one hour at 365 ° C. with a mixture of 1 part by volume of hydrogen chloride and 1.2 parts by volume of air, the catalyst being in the fluidized bed during this treatment.
All catalysts were. in a chlorination process with 1,3-butadiene as the starting material. The reaction was carried out in each case in a tube with a diameter of 18.5 mm, through which a gas mixture consisting of hydrogen chloride, air and 1,3-butadiene in a molar ratio of 2: 2, 4: 1 was passed for three hours at 280.degree has been. The space velocity was 1080 liters (0 C and 1 atm) per hour and per kilo of catalyst, which under these conditions formed a fluidized bed about 7 to 8 cm high. However, the flowability was considerably increased by the deposition of tar products. hindered if one used the carrier D and E, not according to the invention.
The results obtained are shown in the following table:
