Niobium alloy The invention relates to a niobium alloy. This alloy has exceptional temperature and corrosion resistance and is sufficiently ductile to allow machining.
This alloy is suitable as a material for all types of equipment that are exposed to high temperatures, such as gas turbines, high-temperature reaction vessels, systems for refining oil and sinks for metalworking at high temperatures.
The niobium alloy according to the invention is characterized in that it contains at least 5010 / a 1W, 1 to 301% Ti and at least one of the elements Al, Be, C, Co, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Si, Ta, W, V or Zr contains,
where these elements make up a total of 1 to 2010 / a of the alloy and where the alloy does not exceed 10% each of Al, Fe, Mn or V and a maximum of 5% Be, Co,
Contains Ni or W.
The alloy preferably contains 5 to 251% Ti, up to 5 0110 Al, up to 510 / a Ni,
up to 5% Fe and up to 7% Mo, the total content of Al, Ni, Fe and. Mo is 4 to 20%.
If the alloy contains Si and / or C, none of these elements should make up more than 21%: of the alloy.
The metal components can be melted together using the usual methods. On cooling, the alloy solidifies, forming a non-brittle or ductile cast. For this, z. B. an electric arc furnace can be used with a water-cooled copper crucible in which the loading is melted and solidified. The individual metals put into the furnace can have any shape, e.g.
B. as powder, shot, wire, sponge, etc. exist. You can also, if necessary in combination,
Use electric arc furnaces with consuming and non-consuming electrodes or furnaces with steady load. Fer ner can melt by inductive heating in a suitable Tiefges, z.
B. be done according to the so-called skull technique. During the melting process, the metals should be protected from exposure to the atmosphere in order to avoid contamination with oxygen or nitrogen. For this purpose, it is expedient to melt under inert conditions, for example under an inert gas,
like argon, under a protective slag or by both methods.
The alloys according to the invention are far more resistant to oxidation at temperatures of 100 to 500 and retain their mechanical strength to a much greater extent than the known high-temperature alloys. Well-known high-temperature alloys lose their strength or melt at 1300,
while the alloys according to the invention can withstand pressures of more than 100 kg / mm 2 at this temperature.
The alloys according to the invention can form a firmly adhering metal oxide film on their surface when they are heated to relatively high temperatures and cooled.
Example 1 A homogeneous melt containing 23% Ti, 41% Ni, 3% Al and 701% Nb is produced,
by melting the corresponding amounts of metal together and then alternately solidifying and remelting the alloy six times. The melting is carried out in an electric arc melting furnace with a water-cooled copper crucible, such as:
it is described by Kroll in Transactions of the Electrochemical Society, Volume 78, 1940, pages 35 to 47. Part of the melt is poured into a water-cooled cylindrical copper mold with an internal diameter of 19.1 mm and a depth of 50.8 mm. During these operations, helium is used to prevent contamination of the metals.
The cast obtained from the mold is forged and processed into a nozzle for spraying molten salts, such as MgCl2, in chemical processes.
The alloy obtained in this example is tested for its resistance to oxidation at high temperature in the following way:
A weighed sample of the alloy is placed (in a porcelain crucible with a slot to allow adequate air access to the ingot) in a Globar type furnace (registered trademark)
introduced and exposed to an air flow of 57 1 / minute at 1000 for at least 16 hours. The samples are then cooled and weighed; the degree of oxidation corresponds to the percentage weight increase of the sample.
The weight increase of the alloy under these conditions is 1.5%, the weight increase of unalloyed niobium under the same conditions is 20%.
Example 2 An alloy containing 20% Ti, 75% Nb, 3% Al and 2% Co is produced as follows:
The metal components are melted together in the furnace according to Example 1 under helium. While maintaining the helium atmosphere, the alloy is then melted and solidified six times,
whereby a homogeneous ingot is obtained. The weight increase in the test described in Example 1 is 2.5%. Examples 3 to 14 Following the procedure of Example 2, further alloys are produced. The composition and weight gain in the test described in Example 1 are given in the table below.

On the other hand, a certain impurity of the components is permissible without the product quality generally suffering noticeably.
The alloys according to the invention have the advantage of having high mechanical strength at high temperatures, being easy to process and being corrosion-resistant. In addition to these advantageous properties, the alloys are superior to the base metals in that:
than they are resistant to oxidative action in high temple natures. This property is particularly lacking in metallic niobium as such. The alloys according to the invention are suitable for the most varied of uses, for example for the production of contact parts which are used at temperatures above 800.
The usability of the alloys according to the invention for high-temperature systems, such as parts of gas turbines, is particularly emphasized above because of their exceptional properties.
