Process for the preparation of 2,5-diarylamino-terephthalic acids and their esters
It has been found that 2,5-diarylamino-terephthalic acids and their esters can be prepared in a technically advantageous manner if 2,5-di-halo-terephthalic acids or their esters with aromatic amines in which at least one ortho position to the amino group is free is reacted in an organic solvent.
As an organic solvent, for. B. sithylene glycol serve. It is expedient to add copper or a copper compound as a catalyst. The reaction can be carried out at an elevated temperature, preferably at about 70 to 1600.degree.
The 2,5-diarylamino-terephthalic acids and their esters obtained in this way are red compounds which are soluble in most organic solvents. You are e.g. B. suitable for the production of quinacridine-7,14dione. The ring closure can in a known manner, for. B. by heating to temperatures above 800 C, with the addition of an acidic condensing agent.
The parts mentioned in the examples are parts by weight and the percentages are percentages by weight. The temperatures are given in degrees Celsius.
example 1
23.6 parts of 2,5-dichloroterephthalic acid, 155 parts of aminobenzene, 30 parts of anhydrous potassium acetate, 100 to 200 parts of ethylene glycol and 0.4 part of copper acetate are heated to 100 "for 24 hours or to 140 for 8 hours. The reaction product is after Dilute with water separated by acidification with hydrochloric acid and purified by dissolving from dilute aqueous ammoniacal solution or dilute sodium hydroxide solution. When the ammoniacal solution is acidified with acetic acid (lackmussauer), 2,5-diphenylamino-terephthalic acid crystallizes out. It is filtered off. During further acidification the mother liquor with mineral acid, e.g. hydrochloric acid (weakly Congo acid), 2-phenylamino-5-chloro-terephthalic acid precipitates.
The 2,5-dichloro-terephthalic acid can be replaced by another 2,5-dihalo-terephthalic acid, e.g.

These acid-binding agents are added before the start of the reaction, or they are added in finely powdered or dissolved form in small portions during the reaction. Solutions of sodium or potassium hydroxide can also be used. It is advisable to only add so much that the pH of the reaction mixture is in the desired range.
