The present invention relates to an electrode for the electric heating of a liquid bath, in particular of a bath of liquid. molten material such as glass or the like.
The electrode which is the subject of the invention is characterized in that it comprises means capable of ensuring a localized heat supply in at least part of the portion of the electrode immersed in the liquid bath.
In a particular embodiment of the electrode, this supply of calories can be made when desired and / or in an adjustable manner. It makes it possible to increase the temperature of the surface of the electrode in contact with the liquid bath, for example the glass bath, either as a whole or locally. It is thus possible to obtain at the surface of the electrode, or in certain zones thereof, a temperature different from that which would be developed there under the action of the single electric current brought by the electrode to the bath. liquid.
Still in a particular embodiment of the electrode, the additional heating of the electrode can be carried out electrically. An additional electric current can, for example, be passed through the electrode, acting by the Joule effect in the resistance, formed by the electrode itself. It is also possible to carry out the additional heating of the electrode by an electric arc developed behind the wall of the electrode which is in contact with the liquid or in an internal cavity of the electrode.
According to a particularly advantageous embodiment, this additional supply of calories is obtained by one or more electric resistances independent of the electrode itself. These resistors can be placed behind the wall of the electrode, one side of which is in contact with the liquid, for example, in an internal cavity of the electrode. We thus have the possibility of placing this or these resistors opposite any zone of the electrode that it is desired to heat.
This form of execution ensures, because of the independence of the heating resistors with respect to the electrode, more facilities for the adjustment of the supply of additional electrical energy independently of the supply of electrical energy supplying the electrode. the electrode for heating the liquid bath.
It has in fact been observed that the possibility of adjusting the temperature of all or part of the active surface of the electrode has many advantages. The additional heating of the electrode makes it possible to increase the temperature of the glass in contact with all or part of the surface of the electrode. Thanks to localized heating in a given part of the electrode, it is possible to create in the glass bath in the vicinity of this part of the electrode a concentration of electric current lines and thus to determine a preferential heating zone in the bath. of glass.
This additional heating of the electrode also makes it possible to act on the speed of the convection currents created by the electrode in its vicinity and consequently on the size of the zone, in particular the depth of the liquid bath concerned. these currents.
We know the advantage of being able to act on the directions or the speeds of these currents, especially in the manufacture of glass, because of their important role, either to accelerate the heat exchanges between the molten glass and the raw materials. , floating on the bath or between the bath and another heat source acting above the bath, either to accelerate the refining by promoting the departure of gas bubbles and to facilitate the homogenization of the bath.
The electrode according to the invention can find an advantageous application in producing the heating of the glass bath in the conditioning zone or compartment as well as in the working compartment where the supply of calories by the Joule effect in the bath is used to condition the cooling of the glass. It happens that, in the zones or compartments in which the glass is gradually cooled, the electrodes are suddenly isolated from the glass bath by a layer of glass cooled too strongly. The electrode according to the invention makes it possible, by causing the auxiliary heating means of the electrode to act, to defrost the glass in contact with any desired zone of this electrode.
In a particular embodiment of the electrode, it is possible to increase the temperature in only one area of the electrode. Thus, when it is for example a bar-shaped electrode, it may be advantageous to increase the temperature of the electrode over only part of its length, or to increase the temperature of the electrode. the hot zone close to the electrode in a determined region of the bath, or to compensate for heat losses, for example in zones close to the walls.
In the case of a bar-shaped electrode penetrating through the bottom of the furnace, it may be advantageous in certain cases to increase the heating in the vicinity of the upper part of this electrode in order to reinforce the intensity of the zone. hot at this level of the bath, or on the contrary in the vicinity of the bottom of the oven when the bottom glass tends to become too cold.
According to another embodiment of the electrode, it is possible to arrange the auxiliary heating means of the electrode so that the zone of the electrode in which s' can be varied at will. provides additional calories.
Provision may in particular be made for the use of a plurality of resistance elements associated with the electrode and arranged in particular on the side of the face of the wall of the electrode which is opposite to that in contact with the liquid bath, each of the resistance elements being able to be supplied with electric current separately, or all the elements being able to be used simultaneously. It is thus possible to act on a determined zone of the electrode and to vary this zone if desired.
It is also possible to move the auxiliary electrical resistance (s) relative to the electrode in order to vary the position of the heated zone of the electrode.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, various embodiments of the electrode which is the subject of the invention. In the embodiment shown in FIG. 1, the electrode 1 is in the shape of a hairpin and has two current leads 2-2a. This electrode is associated with another bland electrode of identical shape. These two electrodes are connected to a current source 3 in such a way that they ensure the passage of the current in the materials contained in the compartment 4. On the other hand the current leads of each of these electrodes are connected via the intermediary. from a transformer 5 to a current source 6, where a current flows along the electrodes.
The power supply can be done at very low voltage for the part which must pass through the resistance constituted by the electrode and at higher voltage for the part which must be distributed in the glass. The two heating means can be used separately from one another, for example the one heating the electrodes which can be used without there being any distribution of electrical energy in the mass.
Such electrodes can be used, for example, for heating a working compartment, in particular a compartment where the drawing of the sheet glass takes place. The cooperating electrodes can be mounted on the walls or in the vicinity of the walls of the drawing well. They can in particular be arranged towards the ends of the cutter so as to exchange electric current parallel to the drawing slot. Instead of a hairpin shape, it is of course possible to give any other suitable shape to the electrode, for example, a V shape obtained by means of two rods welded by one of their ends.
It can also have zones of different diameter to differentiate the heating from one part of the bath to another.
In the embodiment shown in FIG. 2, the electrode consists of a tube 7 closed at one end by a plate 8. The electrode comprises, inside the tube, insulating refractories 9 and, towards its closed end, a refractory support 10 provided with resistors 11. These resistors are supplied by conductors passing through a refractory insulating sheath 12.
In the axis of the electrode is deposited a pyrometric rod 13 to make it possible to control the temperature at the end of said electrode.
The tube forming the electrode can be made of any suitable metal resistant to the action of glass, for example nickel-chromium. The resistors themselves can be made of nickel-chromium or any other suitable metal.
The support of the resistors can be movable inside the electrode to vary their position. In the embodiment shown, the heating resistors are placed only in the end zone of the electrode, but it is obvious that one could provide along the electrode several zones provided with separate resistors and supplied with current independently of one another, which would allow the zone or zones of the electrode subjected to additional heating to be varied as required.
Fig. 3 shows an embodiment in which the electrode 14 has a cavity 15 in the axis of which is mounted a central rod 16 of conductive material. This rod is separated from the internal wall of the electrode by insulating blocks 17. An auxiliary current supplied by the central rod produces an arc in the space 18 between the end of this rod and the internal wall of the electrode. . The tube 14 and the central rod 16 can, in particular, be made of graphite.
In the embodiment shown in FIG. 4, the electrode 19 is in the form of a tube and comprises along its axis a rod 20 serving as a current supply. The tube is closed, at its end immersed in the bath, by a plate 21 opposing the passage of the current between the rod 20 and the outer tube a resistance of determined value, the magnitude of which is chosen according to the increase in temperature that l 'it is desired to produce at the end of the electrode. The central rod and the tube can, for example, be made of a metal.
Fig. 5 shows an embodiment of the electrode 22 made, for example, of graphite or of metal, comprising an internal cavity 23 in which is disposed a rod 24 in contact by its tip with the electrode and separated from the latter, over its entire length, by an insulating sleeve 25. The auxiliary heating is carried out by passing a current through the rod and into the hollow outer part of the electrode.
The central rod, for example of graphite or of metal, comprises a part formed by the superposition of graphite plates 26 having between them a reduced contact surface and having a large radiating surface.
In fig. 5 there is shown a single high resistance zone constituted by the graphite plates but it is quite obvious that one could provide along the length of the central rod several high resistance zones or even constitute said rod entirely by the graphite plates. graphite with high resistance.
In the embodiment shown in FIG. 6, the electrode 27 has an internal cavity 28 and can be made of metal or graphite. In cavity 28 are arranged two current leads 29-29a separated from each other and isolated from the internal wall of the electrode by an insulating sleeve 30. These two current leads are integral with a heating resistor 31. forming a double spiral and which may be made of silicon carbide.
Electrodes such as those described above with reference to FIGS. 2 to 6 can be mounted so as to protrude from a wall of a glass furnace in one or more zones or compartments of the furnace where the melting of the raw materials, the refining or the conditioning of the glass take place. . They can in particular be mounted in the wall of the drawing well, for example so as to distribute the current in the glass bath parallel to the longitudinal direction of the cutter by their ends in contact with the bath.
The electrodes described make it possible to prevent the formation of a cold glass layer on the active faces of the electrodes.
