Method for protecting and lubricating a mechanism The invention relates to a method for protecting and lubricating a mechanism, for example an articulated and / or sliding mechanism.
This process is characterized in that the mechanism is coated with a plastic lubricant and that, by aqueous dispersion, synthetic rubber is deposited on this coating and the free ends of the mechanism, in order to constitute an elastic sheath. hermetically sealing the mechanism.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of a mechanism protected and lubricated by a particular implementation of the process forming the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 shows, partially in elevation and partially in longitudinal section, a protected and lubricated gimbal.
Fig. 2 represents, enlarged, the section of the coach dan by the plane A-A of FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 shows, on a larger scale, a variant of the section of the gimbal by plane A-A of FIG. 1.
Fig. 4 shows, schematically and partially in longitudinal section, a protected and lubricated articulation, the protective sheath of this articulation being provided with parts allowing the renewal of the lubricant.
The mechanism to be protected being constituted by a gimbal 1, this gimbal 1 is coated, according to the known technique, with a plastic lubricant 2, such as a grease. To facilitate the handling of the coating lubricant, spatulas or other tools that are slightly heated and, preferably, stainless steel are used. To more easily obtain the desired shape of the profile 3A, 3B, 3C of the coating 2, it is advantageous to use a gauge, when the use of this instrument is possible. If, as in the present case, the coating rotates around the mechanism to be protected, a simple rotation of the mechanism allows the plastic lubricant to be quickly put into the desired shape.
It is also possible to use a brush to give the desired shape to the outer surface of the coating 2.
In order to subsequently maintain the protective sheath by gluing on the surfaces of the shafts 4 and 5 of the universal joint, which come out of the coating 2, these surfaces are freed from the lubricant which may be there. This cleaning can be done using a grease solvent, such as trichlorethylene. A sticky product is then applied to these cleaned surfaces making it possible to adhere the synthetic rubber of the sheath to the material of the shafts 4 and 5. In the usual case where the shafts 4 and 5 are made of metal, in particular steel, it is can use a solution of synthetic rubber in a ketone as a tackifier.
In order to increase the adhesion of the sticky product, the bonding surfaces of the shafts 4 and 5 are not very windy, beforehand, be made slightly roughened or be treated by any suitable known method.
After this preparation, the sheath 6 is formed on the outer surface of the coating 2 and on the bonding surfaces of the shafts 4 and 5 by depositing one or more layers, possibly different, of synthetic rubber presented in the form of an aqueous dispersion.
This form of presentation offers the advantage that the water, conveying the synthetic rubber, has practically no action on the coating of lubricant 2. This is not the case with synthetic rubber presented in solution in an organic solvent, this sol. front having a more or less profound action on the coating lubricant.
The synthetic rubber dispersion, used in the example of making the sheath chosen, is a latex of a nitrile-acrylic butadiene copolymer with a high nitrile content. This latex contains 40% of dry synthetic rubber, which is capable of undergoing a vulcanization treatment.
If such vulcanization is desired, treating agents should be added to the latex before use. It is also possible to incorporate thickening agents into the latex, which make it easier to make the sheath.
The above-mentioned latex, the hydrogen potential of which is brought to around 9 by adding ammonia, the following products are incorporated, the contents of which are indicated in percentages relative to the mass of dry synthetic rubber, contained in the latex

<SEP> 0.91 <SEP>% This mixture is less fluid than pure latex and the synthetic rubber obtained after drying vulcanizes over time, preferably by heat treatment.
To make the sheath 6, this mixture is preferably sprayed with a spray gun onto the outer surface of the coating 2 and the bonding surfaces of the shafts 4 and 5, so as to constitute an envelope without any break in continuity. The pressure of the atomizing air may be low, on the order of a few hundred grams per square centimeter. To activate the drying of the spray mixture, it is advantageous to blow hot air, at a temperature of approximately 600 ° C., for example, on the surface of the sheath, as the latter is formed.
After complete covering of the coating 2 and of the bonding surfaces of the shafts 4 and 5 with a layer of synthetic rubber of sufficient thickness and after complete drying of this layer, the sheath 6 can be subjected to a thermal vulcanization treatment, preceded or not by washing the sheath with water.
Preferably, the heat treatment in question is carried out by blowing, for a determined time, hot air at known temperature on the outer surface of the sheath 6. In the example chosen, the sheath 6, covering a gimbal and its lubricant coating and having the aforementioned composition, was washed with water and then treated for 30 minutes at a temperature increasing from 901 ° C to 100 ° C.
After this vulcanization treatment, the sheath was tested by rotating the gimbal which it was protecting, the shafts 4 and 5 of this gimbal forming an angle of 15 degrees between them. In this angular situation, the gimbal executed 17,600,000 revolutions at the speed of 365 revolutions per minute, then 2,698,000 revolutions at the speed of 600 revolutions per minute. The sheath has thus withstood 20,298,000 stress cycles without any lubricant leak being manifested by bonding or by cracking of the sheath.
Other good results have been obtained with the same latex, without adding ammonia or thickening agent, but with the addition of

It may happen that, during the movements of the protected assembly, certain parts of this assembly come into contact with the internal surface of the sheath. This could be the case for a universal joint, such as the universal joint 1, if the shafts 4 and 5 form a large angle between them. If the parts of the assembly, thus coming into contact with the sheath, are abrasive or sharp, the result is premature wear of the sheath, wear which is all the more pernicious as it occurs in an invisible manner by the interior. To remedy this drawback, before carrying out the coating with lubricant, an appropriate coating of these abrasive or cutting parts of the mechanism is carried out.
Such a protective coating can be obtained by bonding to the parts in question profiles of not very hard material, resistant to lubricant, profiles of synthetic rubber, for example. This protective coating can also be achieved by coating the above-mentioned parts with a synthetic rubber latex, optionally thickened, with or without the interposition of a sticky product.
For this particular aim, good results have been obtained by adding to the latex, specified above, on the one hand ammonia to bring its hydrogen potential to around 9, on the other hand the following products
EMI0002.0025
Carboxymethylcellulose <SEP> of <SEP> sodium <SEP>. <SEP>. <SEP> 2.78%
<tb> Zinc <SEP> dispersible <SEP> <SEP> oxide <SEP>. <SEP>. <SEP> <B> ...... </B> <SEP> 5.48% Before application of this particularly viscous mixture, a sticky layer of synthetic rubber in solution in a ketone had been deposited on the parts. of the assembly to be coated.
Both, as regards the making of the sheath and as regards that of the protective coating, it is possible to add, to the dispersion or synthetic rubber latex, synthetic rubber in more or less divided form, this additional rubber which can be deposited, in powder for example, on the lubricating coating or on the sheath at any stage of its manufacture.
The existence of a durable protective sheath, such as that which has been described above, makes it possible to envisage a certain number of arrangements to improve the lubrication of the mechanism thus protected.
The relative movements of the mechanism can be used to establish a circulation of the lubricant. If the journals, bearings or slides of a mechanism require pressure lubrication, the existence of the sheath makes it possible to provide a pump, giving the desired pressure and actuated, thanks to a cam, for example, by the relative movements of the mechanism .
It is also possible to obtain a circulation of the lubricant by providing for its arrival and its evacuation by certain elements of the mechanism, for example by only one or by the two shafts of a universal joint. In the case where the inlet and the outlet are made by only one of these trees, it is advantageous for the outlet duct to have a section greater than that of the inlet duct. Thus the shaft 5 of the cardan shaft 1 can be tubular and receive, inside the tube thus formed, two profiled conduits 7 and 8, the conduit 7 supplying the lubricant and the conduit 8 ensuring its evacuation. As a variant, the lubricant can be brought through a conduit 9 and discharged between the outside of this conduit 9 and the inside of the tubular shaft 5. It is still possible to carry out a partial or total renewal of the lubricant enclosed in it. sheath.
To obtain this result, one or better two tubular parts 13 and 14, preferably provided with a base 15 and a collar 16, are placed on the lubricating coating 10 of the joint 11, before making the sheath 12. and provided with a valve or a plug, not shown. These tubular pieces 13 and 14, which can be made of plastic, are inserted into the sheath 12 during the making of the latter. The ends of these parts are then released, which must remain visible. Via the tubular parts 13 and 14, the lubricant which has been used can subsequently be removed and replaced with a new lubricant.
Experience has shown that a fat which has been used to make the coating becomes sufficiently fluid in a sheathed joint which has operated for a certain time. There is therefore no difficulty in causing the discharge, through part 14, of the lubricant which has been used by forcing the new lubricant to enter the sheath 12 through part 13. If necessary, the unbalance can be compensated for. , due to the possible rotation of parts 13 and 14, by small balancing masses inserted into the material of the sheath.
