Machine for packaging objects
Swiss patent N 347473 describes a method of wrapping objects, consisting in placing at least one object to be wrapped in an open cup made of a thermoplastic material in a state allowing it to contract under the effect of the heat, to partially close this shell, and to submit it finally. to the action of heat, so that it contracts around said object.
It is possible to obtain a thermoplastic material capable of contracting under the effect of heat by stretching the latter to a temperature such that it is in the soft state, then cooling it before it has the possibility. to return to its initial state.
The stretched state is thus unstable and if Fon softens the material completely by heating it, it will tend, unless prevented, to return to its original size and shape.
The object of the present invention is a machine which can be used for implementing this method.
According to the present invention, this machine comprises a conveyor intended to lead a first strip of thermoplastic material through a station where it is deformed, a filling station and a contraction station, a hot molding device being provided at the station where the strip is deformed, and means for cooling it after deformation, so that the strip leaving this station has a series of depressions constituting receptacles intended to receive the objects to be packaged passing through the filling station, means being provided leading a second strip of thermoplastic material intended to cover the receptacles and thus enclose the objects, while, at the contraction station,
hot welding means intended to weld the second strip to the receptacles are provided, as well as heating means intended to heat the receptacles to make them contract and grip the object to be wrapped.
The heating means for inducing the contraction may be a reciprocating element heating by radiation. You could also direct jets of air or other hot gas at the shell when needed.
The drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the invention.
Fig. 1 shows the active part of the packing machine, in perspective, at a given moment in its working cycle.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of part of FIG. 1, performed in the direction of arrows II-II.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to that of FIG.
2, but shows parts of the machine performing an operation different from the cycle described.
Fig. 4 is a local section, taken in the direction of arrow IV of FIG. 1.
In the machine shown is a conveyor belt 11, made of a metal band rolling around a drum 12, rotating idly, and a drum 13, intermittently assisted by a mechanism not shown. Rectangular openings 14 are regularly distributed along this ribbon, spaced apart as shown in the drawing, and the intermittent mechanism operates in such a way that, on each transport of the ribbon, the latter advances by a distance equal to that between centers of two successive openings.
A thermoplastic sheet material with a width approximately equal to the width of the tape 1 1 is driven by the movement of the latter, from a roll 15. Each opening 14 is in turn brought and held stationary under a device. heater with punch 16, covered with a layer of polytetrafluoroethylene, mounted so that it can be raised and lowered vertically. The part of the ribbon located near the punch 16 is heated by radiation from a heating element 17, which can move back and forth horizontally. The punch can be brought to low temperature or possibly be sterilized.
Under the punch 16 is a mold 18, vertically movable and having a cavity, the profile of which corresponds to that of the punch, but which is larger than the latter, its opening being, on the other hand, identical in shape and size to the openings 14. This mold is lifted up to contact with the tape, while the material placed above the tape is softened by the heating element 17. When the material has been sufficiently softened, the heating element 17 is removed. and the punch 16 pushes the material into the mold 18. A suction, produced by means of the suction pipe 19, sucks the material away from the punch 16 to bring it into contact with the mold 18, in which it. is immediately cooled and stabilized in the desired shape and size.
The mold, the punch and the heating element 17 then return to the position in which they are shown in FIG.
1. I1 results from these operations a series of shells 20, constituting open containers, held by the openings 14.
These shells or containers 20 are then filled by hand or in another way, with cookies 21 or other objects, and are in turn brought under a hot-closing device, in the form of a rectangular ring 22, mounted under an annular box 23, made of a U-shaped piece of aluminum and covered with an annular cover 24.
Inside, this box contains a heating element consisting of the electric heating tube 25, placed under the control of a thermostat. In one of the sides of this box, which can rise and fall vertically on a rod 26, a notch also passes through Faune at 22 and in which a plunger 28 can slide. The lower part of the plunger 28 has a pusher 29, the width of which corresponds to that of the ring 22, and at its upper part a thermally insulated extension 30, by which it is connected to means, not shown, intended to raise it. and to lower it, all in such a way that the plunger remains at the temperature of the box 23.
Each time a shell passes under this closing device, it is covered with a strip of thermoplastic material coming from a roll 31.
When the closing device is lowered, the shell has its edge pressed between the strip 14 and the heated ring 22. The pusher 29 does not exert any pressure against this moment, during which the plunger remains lifted.
Under the hot closing device is a heating body 32, movable horizontally and which, at this moment, takes up position under the shell, which thus receives its radiation. One could also use a series of hot air jets, directed against the shell. As the heat weld takes place around the perimeter of the shell, the heat applied by element 32 softens the thermoplastic material of the shell which contracts and grips the article 22 quite tightly.
At the same time, the air escapes from the inside of the shell passing under the pusher 29. When the contraction is complete, the heating element 32 is moved away and the plunger 28 is lowered, so as to complete the contraction. sealing all around the packaging, which is now airtight. The closure device is then lifted and the tape moved so as to bring a new shell under the latter.
As the machine continues to operate, the wrapped objects advance in a continuous strip. The closed shells are lifted as they pass over the drum motor 13, then separated from each other by a knife 33. They fall at 34a on rails 34 on which they slide separately from each other, capable of being packed. , for example, in boxes.
The different parts of the machine can receive their movements through various devices. A preferred means consists in using a pneumatic control, with separate cylinders, intended to move the elements animated by a reciprocating movement, these cylinders being controlled by valves, themselves controlled by cams arranged on a shaft common to the drum drive mechanism 13.
