Combustion engines with at least one exhaust gas turbocharger and at least one additional charger are charged in a known manner by means of turbochargers, that is to say by means of centrifugal compressors that are driven by gas turbines whose operating resources are the exhaust gases of the engine itself. The process is used both on four-stroke machines and: ruf two-stroke machines.
The exhausts of the engine are either stowed in a relatively large container before they are fed to the turbine of the exhaust gas turbocharger (or the turbines of the exhaust gas turbocharger) in so-called constant pressure, or the exhaust shocks can be reduced with the help of narrow exhaust lines individual cylinders of the engine are used.
In two-stroke engines, when the load is low, the energy contained in the exhaust gases is often not sufficient to generate all of the power required to flush and charge the engine cylinders. For such cases, it has already been proposed to combine one or more additional superchargers, which are driven by means other than an exhaust gas turbine, with the turbochargers. The turbochargers and the additional chargers are either connected in series or side by side.
The additional superchargers can be piston pumps as well as centrifugal compressors; However, rotary lobe compressors, the underside of the pistons of the engine itself, or crankcase pumps are also used. The drive of this additional loader can also be done by piston motors, electric motors or by the engine itself.
When the turbocharger compressors and the auxiliary turbochargers are kept side by side, the turbocharger compressors often pumping, especially when the engine is under partial load, that is, irregular air delivery of the same, combined with air pressure fluctuations, with the engine then suffering from a lack of air.
This occurs when the power delivered by the turbine to the compressor is not sufficient to convey as much air as is necessary for the stable operation of the compressor: For such cases, it has already been proposed to equip the turbine of the exhaust gas turbocharger with a be to provide a special nozzle segment, through which you can be supplied to increase the turbine performance by the additional charger air.
The invention therefore relates to an internal combustion engine with at least one exhaust gas turbocharger and at least one additional charger driven by means other than an exhaust gas turbine, the turbine of the exhaust gas turbocharger being provided with a special nozzle segment through which air conveyed by the additional charger is supplied to increase the turbine output can be, and is characterized by control organs in exhaust and air lines, which can be adjusted so
that with higher performance of the internal combustion engine at least part of the air delivered by the auxiliary charger is directed into the open air and part into a charge and purge air tank, while at the same time the special nozzle segment of the turbine of the exhaust gas turbocharger is admitted with exhaust gas from the internal combustion engine.
The drawing shows in FIG. 1 an example of an internal combustion engine according to the invention, while in FIG. 2 the exhaust gas and air supply line to the turbine of the exhaust gas turbocharger are shown separately.
In Fig. 1, 1 schematically represents a cylinder of an internal combustion engine; with 2 is a loading and scavenging air tank and with 3 an exhaust gas tank. The rotor of a turbocharger is shown at 4, the exhaust gas turbine 4a and centrifugal compressor 4b of which are arranged on the same shaft. An additional loader 5 is shown, for example, as a piston pump whose drive is not particularly ge shows.
The air tank 2 is fed by both the supercharger 4b and the auxiliary supercharger 5; from the exhaust gas container 3, the turbine of the exhaust gas turbocharger 4a can be acted upon by two separate exhaust gas lines, which are shown separately again in FIG.
In Fig. 2 also shows a portion of the blade ring of the exhaust gas turbine 4a and a portion 4c of the usual nozzle segments for the supply of the exhaust gases from the power engine to the same; In addition, however, a special nozzle segment is also shown at 4d, through which the turbine of the exhaust gas turbocharger can be fed air conveyed by the auxiliary charger 5 in order to increase the turbine power.
In various air and exhaust lines that connect the turbocharger, the additional charger, the exhaust gas tank and the air tank to one another in the manner shown, control organs are arranged, with their 1lilie with increasing performance of the combustion. engine at least part of the air conveyed by the additional charger.
is directed into the open air and into the charge and purge air tank, while at the same time the special nozzle segment 4d of the turbine of the exhaust gas turbocharger can be exposed to exhaust gas from the internal combustion engine.
Such a control element 6 is located in a blow-out line. Another control element 7 is arranged in one of the air lines that connect the additional loader 5 to the washing compartment 2, and a third control element 8 be found in the air line leading to the special nozzle segment 41 of the turbine of the gas turbocharger from. Sehliesslieh is. also the exhaust pipe, which the exhaust gas container 3 with this nozzle segment. 41 connects, provided with a control element 9.
With the arrangement of the exhaust gas and air lines and the control elements shown, various modes of operation are possible for the Kraftmasehine.
First and foremost, with the appropriate setting of the control elements, the air that is used to drive the turbine of the exhaust gas turbocharger at certain power levels can be blown out into the open air and into the air reservoir, while all nozzle segments of the turbine of the Exhaust gas turbocharger, including the special. Segment 4d, exposed to exhaust gas who the.
These measures reduce the power required to drive the auxiliary loader and, at the same time, give the power engine a little more air. fed. The control can then take place as just described, with the difference that when the power unit is more powerful, air is only blown into the open and fed to the particular nozzle segment. With this measure, the back pressure after the additional charger is significantly reduced and its power consumption is low. The regulation just described can be changed so that the air supply to the special nozzle is interrupted and exhaust gas is applied to it.
The turbine efficiency is improved as a result, since the gas turbine is no longer partially charged. The regulation described in the first place can be varied in such a way that when the engine is more powerful, air is only blown off into the air reservoir and fed to the special nozzle segment. This type of regulation is not suitable for power machines in which the turbochargers deliver too little air even at full load and it is therefore two-dimensional to have the additional charger deliver air parallel to the turbocharger.
A variant of the control type described last is that the air supply to the special nozzle segment is interrupted. This prevents air from being lost through the nozzle. If exhaust gas is applied to the nozzle segment in the control system just described, then partial application losses at the turbine are avoided.
Finally, the control organs can be operated so that in the event of failure. of a turbocharger, all air conveyed by the auxiliary charger is fed to the engine automatically or by inland adjustment, which prevents air from being lost and ensures that the engine can still deliver as much power as possible. According to existing gate documents, for example, it is required that supercharged two-stroke engines must have an auxiliary compressor that can be used if the turbo compressor fails; the aforementioned additional loader represents such an auxiliary compressor.
The adjustment of the rule organs described can be done by hand, or automatically, be it depending on the speed of the engine or on one of the pressures present in the system, eg. B. the pressure in the delivery line of the additional supercharger, or be it depending on the filling adjustment of the engine or on any one or more of the performance-dependent variables.
