Process for the production of leather In Swiss patent no. 323613 a process for retanning leather is protected, which consists in leather tanned with synthetic or inorganic (mineral) tanning agents with the salts of the condensation products of sulfones of monohydric phenols , non-aromatic amines and formaldehyde.
The essence of this retanning consists mainly in the extraordinarily good binding of these condensation products to leather that has been pretanned with synthetic sulfo-containing and / or vegetable tanning agents. The strong binding of the retanning substances causes increased weight (yield) and volume (thickness) increases in the leather and reduces what is known as washable in the leather. The dyeability and fat absorption of the retanned leather are greatly improved in the desired manner.
The subject of the present patent is a process for the production of leather, which is characterized in that, for the sewing tanning, polynuclear, cationic condensation products which are at least soluble in water in the form of their salts and which have a gelatin-precipitating effect but are not sufficient for single tanning have,
obtained by condensation of monovalent Phendlen or of phenol mixtures containing predominantly monovalent phenols with primary or secondary amines and carbonyl compounds and containing one basic nitrogen atom in the molecule for each phenolic hydroxyl group.
Aromatic, aliphatic, cycloaliphatic amines, etc., which on their part can be both primary and secondary, can be used as amines. Possible carbonyl compounds are ketones and aldehydes, especially formaldehyde. , Condensation products of a similar type are z. B. in German Patent Nos. 644708. 692252, 696320 and French Patent No. 816252 described.
In addition, numerous of the long-known insoluble phenolic resins can be converted into soluble cationic compounds by subsequent condensation with amines and aldehydes.
These cationic phenolic condensation products have amphoteric character, that is to say they form soluble salts with acids and alkalis, but are insoluble in the region of the isoelectric point.
As a result of their canonical nature, these condensation products have a strong tanning effect and at the same time also have a strong leather-filling effect. This effect is generally considerable. high molecular weights and reinforced by the high equivalent weight, based on a basic group. Furthermore, this filling and tanning effect of the known products can be achieved by blunting the retanning liquor by carefully adding alkalis, e.g. B.
Ammonia, sodium bicarbonate, etc., can be increased to a pFl value of about 5-6.5.
However, the condensation products described according to the invention are just as little sole tanning agents as the products claimed in Swiss Patent No. 323613, which means that no leather of commercial quality can be produced with these products by the methods customary in today's practice. This differentiates these condensation products from the compounds claimed in Swiss Patent No. 310254, which can also be used as sole tanning agents.
The cationic, phenolic condensation products have - under certain conditions, more or less strong gelatin-precipitating effects, which are, however, nowhere near as strong as z. B. the precipitates obtained with the products of German patent nos. 872946 and 881347. The gelatin-precipitating effect depends on the ratio of the phenolic GH groups or
Cores dependent on the amini groups.
On the basis of the two main characteristic properties of the condensation products mentioned: on the one hand, the more or less strong gelatin-precipitating effect combined with a certain, weakly shaped tanning capacity (which is more pronounced in tanning in alcohol), which creates a certain relationship to the cationic tanning agents and on the other hand, the ability to use anionic compounds, such as:
Precipitating tanning agents, dyes, etc., which gives them a similarity to the tanning agent fixing agents, is due to their excellent property as retanning agents.
In contrast, the tanning agents used in today's tannery practice, all of which are of a non-phenolic nature, fall sharply. from. So have z. B.
Leathers that were aftertreated with aniline chlorohydrate or hexamethylene tetramine, which are the most widely used tanning agents in practice today, increases in thickness of 6% (when using 20% fixing agent) compared to an increase in thickness of 20-25 % when using the same weight amounts of the described cationic, phenolic condensation products. Another advantage over the known tanning agents is, as mentioned, the possibility of
completely exhausting the liquors by dulling them to a pH value close to the isoelectric point. This can blunt with non-phenolic, cationic fixing agents, such as. B. in the case of aniline chlorohydrate, as this would then be converted into unbound, volatile aniline (poisonous effect).
The weakly tannic properties due to the phenolic character guarantee an even penetration and penetration of the leather substance, with uneven tanning being compensated for. So-called dead tanning and similar clogging of the leather substance, as they are known from non-phenolic tanning agents, do not occur when the condensation products mentioned are used.
Furthermore, the surprising fact was found that these condensation products, which themselves do not have sufficient sole tanning capacity, can exchange up to 50 percent or more percent for the cationic tannins which allow self-tanning without their sole tanning capacity being significantly impaired. Such mixtures can be used both as complete single tanning agents and as excellent retanning agents. By choosing the appropriate amount of suitable components, the astringency of the mixture can be varied within wide limits as desired.
Example 1 A condensation product of phenol, formaldehyde and dimethylamine, according to German patent specification No. 692252, Example 1, is brought into solution with so much hydrochloric acid that this solution after adjustment to a concentration of 25% ( calculated on dry matter) has a pH value of about 3.5.
With this product, a goatskin that has been tanned with 25% parts by weight of pure tanning material (Gelişeli from equal parts by weight of Quebracho 1: 0.5 sulf. And synthetic replacement tanning materials) is retanned as follows: 100 parts by weight of this moist leather, the thickness of which is before after tanning has been precisely determined by measurements at various points, water is drummed in 200 parts of the room. 20 parts by weight of the above-described 25% strength solution of the basic condensation product are added in 3 portions with an interval of 30 minutes and allowed to tumble for 2 hours.
After this time the pH of the liquor is about 4.3. Now you set a pH of 6.2 by carefully adding ammonia (2.5%), drum again for 30 minutes and remove the leather. Measurement shows that the leather has experienced an increase in thickness of 25.7% during retanning. For comparison with 20 parts by weight of a 25% pure tanning agent solution of Quebracho (0.5: 1.0 sulfated), leather which has been tanned and pretanned in exactly the same way shows a thickness increase of 5% after this retanning.
After drying, a light brown, full, non-slip leather of good quality is obtained, which is considerably fuller than the comparison leather.
Example 2 N, N-dimethyl-p-oxybenzylamine is produced in accordance with German Patent No. 692309 by condensing phenol, formaldehyde and dimethylamine. This pro duct is condensed according to Example 3 of German Pa tentschrift No. 692252 with formaldehyde to form a resin which is brought into solution with hydrochloric acid. This solution is adjusted to a dry matter content of 25%.
If, as described in Example 1, a goat leather is retanned with 20 parts by weight of the 25% solution and then blunted down to pg 5.9, a leather is obtained which, in a moist state, compared to a quebracho as in Example 1 with 5% pure tanning agent (0.5: 1.0 sulfated) retanned leather has an increase in thickness of 29.5% compared to 4.9%. After drying, you get a very full, grippy, beautiful, light-colored leather with a typical vegetable character.
Example 3 Imagine, according to the German patent specification 692252, a condensation product of 1 mol of 4,4'-dioxydiphenyldimethy lmethane (prepared from phenol and acetone), 2 mol of dimethylamine and 2 mol H.C0 and dissolves the resulting resin in dilute hydrochloric acid to a 25% solution.
100 parts by weight of the moist goat leather used in Example 1 are retanned with 20 parts by weight of the 25% strength solution in the manner described in Example 1 and blunted to pH 6.4. The increase in thickness in the retanning is 25.2 % . After drying, a very beautiful, full leather is obtained, which, by virtue of its fullness and feel, advantageously differs from a pure tanning agent in the form of quebracho (0.5: 1.0 sulfated) retanned with 5 parts by weight.
Example 4 A basic resin prepared from m-cresol, formaldehyde and morpholine in accordance with the information in German Patent No. 692252 is dissolved in dilute acetic acid to form a 25% solution.
100 parts by weight of goatskin as in Example 1 are retanned with 20 parts by weight of this solution and the liquors are then blunted to pH 6.0. The increase in thickness in retanning is 27.3%. The finished leather is full and grippy with an emphatically vegetarian character.
Example 5 According to the German patent specification No. 644708, a basic condensation product is prepared from p-cyclohexylphenol, diethylamine and formaldehyde, it is dissolved with dilute hydrochloric acid and the solution has a dry matter content of 25% % one.
100 parts by weight of the moist goat leather used in Example 1 are retanned in the manner described there with 20 parts by weight of this solution and the liquor is finally brought to a pn of 6.4.
The leather retanned in this way has an increase in thickness of 30.7%, is full and has a nice, musky feel.
Example 6 It is prepared according to the information from Koebner (Zeitschrift für angewandte Chemie 46 [1933], page 251) from p-cresol and formaldehyde 2,2'-dioxy-5,5'-dimethyl -diphenyl- methane. 22.8 parts by weight of this compound are stirred with 23.4 parts by weight of a 38.6% strength dimethylamine solution and slowly added dropwise at 60 to 20 parts by volume of 30% strength formaldehyde solution. Then condense at 100 for about 21/2 hours.
After cooling, 25 parts by weight of hydrochloric acid (diluted 1: 1) are added and a concentration of 25% is adjusted by adding water. 100 parts by weight of moist, East Indian bastard leather are retanned with 10 parts by weight of the 25% strength solution mentioned in 300 parts by volume of liquor in the manner described in Example 1, the tanning liquor being tanned down to pn 6.1 at the end.
The dried leather has a nice light color, a full feel and a nice surface gloss. The increase in thickness in retanning, measured in the dry state and based on the thickness of the dry, non-retanned bastard leather, is 25.4%. A bastard leather after-tanned for comparison with the retanning material described in Swiss Patent No. 319943, Example 1a (10 parts by weight of a 25% solution) shows a thickness increase of 28%.
In a similar way, 13 parts by weight of ethanolamine in 20 parts by weight of 30% form can be obtained from 22.8 parts by weight of 2,2'-dioxy-5,5'-dimethyldiphenylmethane, obtained from p-cresol and formaldehyde Aldehyde solution prepared and retanned with hydrochloric acid dissolved in water condensation product. The leather obtained has a similar body and feel.
Example 10 Parts by weight of a trinuclear compound prepared according to Koebner (Zeitschrift für angewandte Chemie 46 [1933], p. 251) from p-cresol and formaldehyde are mixed with 5.2 parts by weight of a 38.6% strength dimethylamine solution and 5.7 parts by weight 30% form aldehyde solution condenses for 11/2 hours at 80-100.
The reaction product is brought into solution with hydrochloric acid and adjusted to a concentration of 25%.
With 10 parts by weight of this solution, 100 parts by weight of moist East Indian Ba stardleder are retanned in the manner described in Example 6. Compared to a bastard leather that has not been retanned, the leather obtained is substantially fuller and has better grip.
In a similar manner, you can retanning with a compound of 24.8 parts by weight of the same trinuclear compound, 13 parts by weight of ethanolamine and 20 parts by weight of 30% formaldehyde solution and dissolved in hydrochloric acid condensation product. The leather obtained is slightly fuller than that described in the previous paragraph.
Example 8 A novolac is produced by acid condensation of 100 parts by weight of technical phenol-cresol mixture with 50 parts by weight of 30% formaldehyde. 100 parts by weight of this dry novolac are dissolved in 100 parts by volume of 5N sodium hydroxide solution and then 35 parts by weight of ethanolamine and 50 parts by weight of 30% formaldehyde solution are added in succession. After the exothermic reaction has ended, the mixture is heated to 100 for a further 2 hours.
The reaction mixture is poured into excess half-concentrated hydrochloric acid, the precipitated resin is separated off and largely freed from the mother liquor by kneading. A solution with a dry matter content of 10% is prepared from this resin. If 100 parts by weight of moist East Indian bastard leather are re-tanned with 25 parts by weight of this solution and then blunted to pH 5.9, a leather is obtained that is considerably fuller and more grippy than a comparative leather that has not been tanned.
Example 9 10 parts by weight of the solution of the basic m-cresol resin used in Example 4 of this application are mixed with 10 parts by weight of the solution of a basic dioxydiphenylsulfone resin. HCl (dry matter content 25%), as it is obtained according to the Swiss Patent No. 319943, Example 1a, mixed. 100 parts by weight of moist goat leather, prepared as described in Example 1, are tanned with 12 parts by weight of this retanning material mixture and finally blunted down to pg 6.0.
After drying, you get a very full leather with a beautiful surface gloss and a pleasant feel. For comparison with 3 parts by weight of racing tanning agent sumac extract, leather from the same hide is significantly less full.
A similar result is obtained if, as in Example 6, East Indian bastard leather is aftertreated with the retanning mixture described above.
Example 10 By mixing equal parts by weight of the 25% solution of the basic resin described in Example 5 with the 25% solution of a tanning agent obtained in the usual way from resorein, ammonium chloride and formaldehyde Retanning material mix.
100 parts by weight of vegetable-synthetic pretanned goatskin are treated with 12 parts by weight of this retanning material. One dulls to about pA 6 and a beautiful full leather of a similar character as in example 9 is obtained. The increase in thickness in the retanning is 21%.
A similar leather is obtained by retanning with a mixture of 70 parts by weight of the 25% strength solution of the basic resin described in Example 6, paragraph 1 with 30 parts by weight of a 25% strength. Solution of the resorcinol used in example 10.
Example 11 100 parts by weight of unneutralized chrome calfskin, which has been tanned according to the usual method with 3 parts by weight of chromium oxide in the form of a commercially available 3-valued basic chromium salt, are converted into about 200 parts by volume of water with 8 parts by weight the 25% neutrient solution used in Example 9 after tanning by adding the 1:
Add 2 diluted solution in 2 portions 10 minutes apart, tumble for 30 minutes and then slowly and evenly add 1: 10 diluted technical grade ammonia to adjust the pH of the liquor to about 6.0 elevated. After 10 minutes, the leather is removed, briefly rinsed and finished as usual.
In the same way, chrome leather can be retanned with the retanning agents and mixtures mentioned in Examples 1-10: the leathers obtained are significantly fuller than untanned chrome leather; They have a good grain resistance and can be dyed easily without the chrome character being changed much as is the case with typical semi-chrome leathers.
