The invention relates to valves used to control the flow of pressurized fluid in a pipe and comprising a plug with a housing in which is mounted a rotary shutter capable of oc cuper, on the one hand, an open position for which the flow can take place between an inlet orifice and an outlet orifice and, on the other hand, a closed position for which the shutter prevents this flow.
The main object of the invention is to establish a valve of this type in which the seal is provided mainly by the pressurized fluid itself. Another object of the invention is to simplify the construction compared to those of the rotary shutter valves in common use.
According to the invention, the rotary shutter valve for pressurized fluid is characterized in that it comprises a hollow plug, inlet and outlet orifices opening into the cavity of the plug, a shutter comprising a core intended for rotate in said cavity and in which is provided a segment-shaped slot, arranged so as to allow direct communication between said orifices when the shutter is in the open position, and an elastic sheath arranged around the core and having a opening located opposite said lumen, an interval being formed between the core and the sheath to allow the entry of the pressurized fluid into this interval, so that the zone of the sheath located opposite the outlet orifice, when the shutter is in the closed position,
is subjected to the action of the pressurized fluid which presses it against the wall of the cavity around the outlet orifice.
The sheath may include in its thickness a passage into which the pressurized fluid enters.
In some embodiments, the sheath may extend beyond the ends of the core and make sealed contact with the parts which retain it within the plug cavity, so that the need to be dispensed with. the usual gasket. This feature is particularly advantageous when the shutter has a cylindrical or frustoconical shape, although it can also occur when the shutter is spherical.
Various embodiments of the invention have been shown, by way of example, in the annexed drawing in which FIG. 1 is an elevation of an embodiment with parts cut away and shows the valve in the closed position; fig. 2 is a section taken along line 2-2 of FIG. 1; fig. 3 is a view not differing from FIG. 2 only by the position of the shutter shown open; fig. 4 is a bottom view; the fi-. 5 is an elevation of a second embodiment of which certain parts are cut away; and fig. 6 is a similar view of a third embodiment.
In the embodiment of FIGS. 1 to 4, the valve shown comprises a plug 10 having a cylindrical bore 11, in which open radially an inlet orifice 12 and an outlet orifice 13. The orifices establish communication between the bore 11 and the bulures. threaded sleeves 14 - 15 into which the threaded ends of pipes 16 - 17 are screwed.
In the bore 11 is housed a shutter 19 formed by a core 18 having a segment-shaped slot 20 recessed in this core.
The axis A-A of the bore 11 is on one side of the axis B-B of the plug, so that when the shutter is brought to its open position shown in FIG. 3, it only opposes an insignificant obstacle to the free passage of the fluid from the inlet port to the outlet port.
The core 18 is surrounded by a sheath 21 made of an elastically flexible material, such as natural rubber. In the embodiment shown, the sheath completely surrounds the circumference of the core and has an opening located opposite the lumen 20. However, as will result from the following description, it could exist only on the port. segment indicated at 21a (FIG. 1) of the periphery of the core which comes opposite the outlet orifice 13 and with the surface of the wall of the bore which borders the outlet orifice.
The sheath 21 is in contact with only a part, indicated at 22, of the surface of the core and the remainder of the sheath is not in contact with this surface on the segment 21a. It has a reduced thickness on this segment to provide a determined gap 23 between it and the core.
As indicated above, the sheath is said to be continuous over the lumen 20. A passage allowing the pressurized fluid to enter between the sheath 21 and the core 18 is thus provided at 24 where the sheath is discontinuous; the segment 21a, being elastically flexible, is pressed by the fluid against the wall of the bore continuously around the outlet orifice 13, when the valve is in the closed position, making a tight seal whose the greater the efficiency of the fluid itself.
The edges of the sheath which are perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the shutter are chamfered, as indicated at 25, to establish a flexible membrane extending into the space left free by the lumen 20 and intended to be pressed by the fluid in contact with the bore wall preventing fluid leakage laterally.
The rotation of the shutter is effected by a handle 26 which is integral with a chain 27 which engages on a rod 28 starting axially from the core 18 and threaded at its end to receive a nut 30.
At its lower end, a base 31, which rests against a flat face 32 machined on the plug, is integral with the core of the shutter; it could also be fixed on him; the base 31 and the cap 27 oppose the axial displacement of the shutter.
The sheath 21 protrudes slightly beyond the core 18 so as to be deformed, when the nut 30 is screwed down, until a sealed contact is established with the cap 27 and the base 31. It is possible to thus dispense with the usual sealing stuffing-box, which simplifies the valve and reduces its price compared with valves currently in use.
The device for limiting the rotational movement of the handle 26 is associated with the base 31. If we examine FIG. 4, we see that the base has an arcuate notch 33 hollowed out in this part, while the plug 10 has a boss 34 which limits the rotation of the shutter between its extreme positions, one of which is the open position. and the other the closed position.
The embodiment of FIG. 5 differs from that already described only by the frustoconical shape of the shutter 19a. The base 31a is however separated from the core 18a and screwed onto it to allow the valve to be fitted.
The embodiment of FIG. _ 6 comprises a spherical shutter 19b, the plug 10b forming a complementary cavity in which the shutter is housed. The valve 10b is composed of two parts assembled by bolts and nuts 35 passing through the flanges 36. The shape of the valve itself opposes any movement other than a rotational movement, so that the base existing in the valve. the other embodiments are omitted, the displacement of the handle 26b being limited by an arcuate notch 33b formed in the cha skin 27b and by a boss 34b provided on the plug 10b.
For the rest, the tap does not ask for any explanation.
