Process for the continuous manufacture of folded metal wire articles and macbine for carrying out the process. The present invention relates to a method and a machine for. continuous manufacture of bent wire articles, such as elastic elements for hair rollers, hairpins. hair, summer.
It has been known for a long time to manufacture such objects by the process that one could. denominate a stamping or a pure molding, which means that after the section of wire intended to be shaped has been advanced by a pair of pincers or a set of conveyor rollers, it is first die cut and is then bent around a fixed matrix or is shaped on this matrix, and finally ejected.
There is also known a method referred to as the winding method, and according to which a wire is wound on a rotary mandrel of suitable shape. Hitherto, however, this process has only been applied in the case where the articles to be manufactured have a completely convex contour.
The object of the present invention is to provide a method and a machine for its smooth implementation, according to which it is possible to manufacture, absolutely continuously, articles of folded metal wire, not only having an entirely contour. convex, but also a contour having one or more concave parts.
The method according to the invention is characterized in that the wire is wound in a cylindrical mandrel rotating about an axis parallel to its generatrix, so as to form a coil having a single layer of wire, in that said reel is moved in the axial direction, after each revolution of said man drin, so as to free up sufficient space on the mandrel to receive a new turn of wire, in that said reel is brought onto a second rotating mandrel. jointly and severally. with the first, and in that the wire is finally subjected to deformations on this second man drin.
The machine which allows the implementation of this method is itself characterized in that it comprises a rotary wrapping mandrel, at least one other mandrel integral in rotation with the winding mandrel, at least one punch cooperating with one of said mandrels, means for imparting to the winding mandrel, after each revolution, a reciprocating axial movement, and a stop whose surface is perpendicular to the axis of the winding mandrel, surrounding the latter and rotating with it, axially fixed and arranged so that the wire which is wound up to form the last turn of the wire wound on the winding mandrel bears against said stop surface.
The accompanying drawing illustrates the method and shows, by way of example, one embodiment of the machine for carrying out the method. Figs. 1 and 2 are schematic views, in two directions perpendicular to each other, illustrating an implementation of a winding-up assigned process for the manufacture of a bent wire article.
Fig. 3 is a partial axial section, on an enlarged scale, showing a detail of the machine shown in FIG. 6.
Fig. 4 is a front view of the detail of FIG. 3.
Fig. 5 is a section taken along line V of FIG. 6.
Fig. 6 is a front view, in the direction of arrows VI-VI of FIG. 5, of the machine forming the subject of the invention.
Figs. 7 to 9 each show a different detail, on an enlarged scale, of the machine shown in fig. 6.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, the wire 1. is stored on a rotating spool 2 and it is subjected to a braking in 3. The element 3a exerts a pressure on the element 3b. The wire then passes between two guide rollers 4 and 4ra and is wound on a mandrel 5 of cylindrical shape which has a fully convex profile and rotates around its longitudinal axis in the direction of arrow D (fig. 2). This winding takes place as follows: The end 6 of the wire is bent at a right angle and inserted into a longitudinal groove 7 of the mandrel 5, so that the spool of wire can be driven by the rotating mandrel.
After a few turns have been wound up on the mandrel, these ensure by themselves the subsequent winding of the wire, however the end 6 moves, during the rolling, in the groove 7 of the mandrel 5, in the direction of the arrow H. An annular disc 8, which could be called re pusher, surrounds the mandrel 5 and rotates with the latter. This disc is held stationary axially by a pad 9 fixed relative to the frame of the machine.
In addition to its rotation, the mandrel 5 also performs a reciprocating axial movement of reduced amplitude in the direction of the arrow L. This latter movement is synchronized with the rotation of the mandrel, so that after each revolution of the latter. Ci, the latter is moved to the right in fig. 1. The last coil of wire that has just been wound presses against the front face of the disc, functioning as a stop surface.
During the travel of the mandrel 5 towards the. right, the coil of wire already wound is held axially fixed by the disc 8 and therefore slides to the left (fig. 1) with respect to the mandrel 5. When running to the left of the mandrel 5, said spool of wire follows the movement of the mandrel by friction and a free space is formed between the disc 8 and the spool of wire intended to receive the wire of a new turn.
If one proposes to form an object. wire, purely convex in shape, it suffices to provide a knife 10 on the mandrel and a punch 11, rotating in synchronism with the mandrel and moving once towards the knife 10 after each revolution, so as to press the wire against this knife.
When the wire article will shape an outline which has at least one con cave part, the wire is also wound in a single-layer spool on a purely convex mandrel 12 (fig. 3), similar to the mandrel 5 of figs. . 1 and 2 and also equipped with an annular disc identical to the disc 8 of FIGS. 1 and 2.
This arrangement ensures the passage of the spool of wire of this mandrel 12 over a mandrel bolster 13 fixed to the mandrel 12 and whose section has the final shape of the articles to be made ner. Sliding punches 14, 15, 16, of shape corresponding to that of the convex parts, rotate with the mandrel and during each revolution execute a race in the direction of mandrel 13. The incision of the wire, of the tines to allow the detachment of the articles from each other, takes place in the way already. described with reference to fig. 1 and 2, that is to say that the spool of wire passes opposite an incising knife 17 and it is incised or cut by a punch which comes to press against this knife.
When the shaped wire is to be cut or cut in one of its concave parts, the the stubber punch then also performs the function of an ineiser or cutter. The punch 14 (Figs. 3 and 4) shows an example of such a punch neur and scoring style.
In order to allow the transport of the coil of wire from the winding mandrel 12 to the pressure mandrel 13, it is necessary that in axial projection, the section of the latter is inscribed in that of the winding mandrel. In most cases, it is even advantageous to choose the cross section of these mandrels such that in axial projection the cross section of the pressure mandrel touches that of the winding mandrel at least at one point, but preferably in a few dots spaced, as is. the case of points 18, 19, 20 (fig. 4). This arrangement has the consequence that the pressure mandrel can itself completely support and guide the spool of thread.
In the example shown, however, profiled elements 21, 22, 23 are provided, rotating in synchronism with the mandrels 12, 13 and supporting the coil of wire from the outside; when she left the winding drin. It is clear that provision can be made to support said coil by a completely different arrangement of external elements with a completely different form of the pressure mandrel. In addition, the sections of the pressure and winding mandrels are generally chosen so that their peripheral lengths are equal. This is not, however, absolutely necessary.
For example, when it is only a matter of locally producing a relatively small concave recess, provision is preferably made to support and. to guide the spool of wire outwardly, once it has left the take-up mandrel, thereby giving the pressure mandrel a smaller periphery. In this case, the pressure gauge only acts locally as a pressure counter-matrix. On the other hand, it is also conceivable to give the pressure mandrel a larger periphery than that of the winding mandrel.
It is sometimes difficult, for technical reasons, to place the pressure mandrel close to the winding mandrel. In fig. 3, we see a transition or connecting member 24 of varying length, disposed between the two mandrels 12, 13, to guide the coil during its movement between the winding mandrel and the swimming mandrel. To facilitate the transport of the reel along this intermediate member which has a certain length, the latter is made conical.
The taper of this part is defined, for example, by the generatrices which join the points of the cross sections of the two mandrels and which lie in the same axial plane. Given that the section of the pressure mandrel is, in axial projection, inscribed inside that of the rolling mandrel, the generatrices of said conical portion all converge in the direction of advance of said coil.
In addition, the spool of wire can be transported from this first pressure mandrel, via a converging transition element, to a second or third pressure mandrel in order to carry out other shaping operations, so that the final product can have very complicated shapes. Usually a pressure mandrel and three or four corresponding shaping punches are sufficient, but the many possibilities offered by the above process should be noted.
Referring to the overall views (fig. 5 and 6) of the machine, intended in the particular case to manufacture clasps or staples, such as curlers, the wire 25 passes through a brake 26 and enters between two rollers of guide 27 and 28 to then be wound on the winding mandrel 29. In the ma chine shown by way of example, the brake 26 is established in the form of a conical clamping device. This, however, is all. completely secondary and any other braking device can be used, taking into account the profile of the wire to be worked and the quality of the latter.
The center distance of the rollers 27 and 28 is adjustable using an eccentric shaft 30, a lever 31 and a handle 32, the position of the rollers being determined by securing the lever 31 - and the handle 32, using the screw 33, on a ring in the form of a segment which has a groove 34 profiled in T. In addition to guiding the wire, the rollers 27 , 28 can be used to give it its final profile by pressing. In this case, the shape of the faces of the Y-rollers coming. in touch. with the wire will have a suitable shape. Thus, for example, one can use an ordinary wire with a circular profile and flatten it by the rollers 27 and 28 in order to give it a different profile.
By mounting a pair of rollers between which the wire is called to pass, even greater profile changes can be printed over time.
A groove 35 (Fig. 5) of width equal to the thickness of the wire to be worked is made in the mandrel 29. This groove extends into the adjacent pressure mandrel 36, so that, to initiate the winding operation The end of the wire, previously bent at a right angle, is introduced inside this groove 35. As soon as the winding begins, this end of the wire moves along the groove 35 until the moment where it comes out of the machine. The friction of the wire on the mandrels is then amply sufficient to ensure the continuation of the winding operation.
The winding mandrel 29 has only a short cylindrical part, followed by a conical part converging towards the pressure sleeve 36, which also has only a short cylindrical section and then a conical part to be polished to allow an advance. easy ment of the spool of thread.
The mandrels are driven by a grooved louse 37, a shaft 38 and a pinion 39, which drives a toothed wheel 40. The hollow hub 41 of the latter is rotatably mounted in the frame 42 and is coupled to a toothed wheel. shaft 4-1 using a pair of keys -13. The shaft 44 is provided with a disc 45 to which the winding mandrel is fixed by a screw 16 and a rib, not shown, provided on the disc 45 and penetrating into a groove of the winding mandrel to ensure its in training.
This construction allows the mandrels to be primer, in addition to the rotational movement, a reciprocating axial movement of low amplitude, thus ensuring advancement. of the. spool of thread. This axial movement takes place under the action of a conveyor 47 attached to. the end of the shaft 44 and rotating. with him. Once per revolution, this transporter moves axially, thanks to a pair of ga lets 48a and 48b, rolling on a pair of cams 49a and 49b, mounted on a ring 50 (FIG. 7). This last one is. fixed to the frame 42 forming part of the frame of the machine.
Thus, at each revolution, the mandrel is moved axially by the height of the cam. An annular disc 51 surrounds the winding mandrel on which it is fitted with greasy friction. so as to rotate with him. This disc 51 is however held axially stationary by a part 52 and, therefore, it advances the spool of wire by an amount corresponding to the height of the cams during each retraction of the shaft 44. The shaft 44, as well as the mandrels, are brought back into place under the action of a spring 53.
There is thus formed, after each revolution, on the winding mandrel, a free space intended to receive the next turn of the coil of wire.
Fig. 7 shows a plan view and two sectional views of the ring 50 with the two cams 49a and 49b, which are provided at different distances from the center of the ring. The rollers 48a and 48b, provided at corresponding distances from the axis 44, pass simultaneously over these cams, but only once per revolution.
Fig. 8 shows, in detail, the part 52 and the annular disc 51 in plan and in axial section. The part 52 has the shape of a half-ring, which allows the disc 51 to be replaced more easily when the machine is on. development for other work. The shaft 38 carries a second pinion 54 identical to the pin gnon 39 which, by means of a toothed wheel 55, identical to the wheel 40, drives a disc 56 in synchronism with the mandrel. The disc 56 carries guides 57a, 57b and 57c for the slides 58a, 58b, 58c which carry punches 62a, 62b, 62c.
These punches are moved approximately radially in the direction corresponding to the shaping, under the effect of corresponding eccentric rings 59c, 59b, 59c, mounted on the frame of the machine and clamped by four clamping plates 60 after the adjustment of the correct position in relation to the direction of shaping.
On these eccentric rings move. gaets 61a., 67.b, 61c, mounted in forks of the sliders 58a, 58b, 58c, thus moving the latter with the punches 62a., 62b, 62e in the direction of shaping, so that at each revolution each punch performs a stroke.
The recall of slides 58a, 58b, 58c. with the punches and the rollers, so that the latter remain in contact with the eccentric rings, is provided by pressure springs 63, aided by the centrifugal force generated by the rotation of the slides. The punch 62a is both a shaping punch and a scoring punch. When he has reached the end of his inward course, he squeezes the thread. against a scoring knife 64.
The latter is preferably established in the form of a circular disc with a sharp periphery, mounted on a shaft 65 (Fig. 5) in a slot in the pressure mandrel. Thus, with each advance movement of the wire spool, this scoring disc is somewhat driven in rotation. In this way, with each stroke of the punch, another point on its periphery is involved, which increases the useful life of this knife compared to a knife which would be fixed to the mandrel.
In order to prevent, in particular when working with wire of circular section, that the wire does not escape from the punch towards the rear (see fig. 9 which shows, on a larger scale, the operation of the punch 62a jointly with the mandrel 36), and thus does not come to be placed below the turn called to be shaped by the following stroke, it is provided (preferably a notch with the punches.
This notch 66, shallow, is disposed at the end of the pressure face of the punch facing the winding mandrel, so that a turn trapped in this groove is driven by the punch, is thus preformed and therefore constitutes a support for the following turn already pre-shaped, when the latter is going to undergo its final shaping.
As already indicated above, it is often advantageous, or even necessary, to have the spool of wire supported not only by the shaping mandrel, but also by guide members gripping it from the outside, this in particular when the punches work asymmetrically. Fig. 6 shows three guide members 67a., 67b, 67c, of which the one, designated by 67a, must be considered as essential in order to constitute a support against the unilateral pressure of the shaping and scoring punch 62a, while the guide members 67b and 67c,
which increase the regularity of the product, add. usefully their action to that of organ 67a.
