Process for the production of oxyketones. It is already known to produce the corresponding oxy ketones by addition of water to acetylene alcohols, which are particularly suitable as intermediates for the manufacture of amino alcohols. The reaction proceeds according to the formula
EMI0001.0005
but with moderate yields. R1 and R "are monovalent hydrocarbons, which together can form parts of a hydroaromatic ring.
Preferably is. R is a methyl group and R.1 is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical.
According to a known method, e.g. B. from methylbutynol using mercury salts as a catalyst methyl butanolone in a maximum of 66% yield.
In this case, the product was isolated by steam distillation, and the distillate was isolated with potassium carbonate and subsequent vacuum distillation. In this way, no anhydrous product was obtained and the aqueous residue from steam distillation was discarded. Per mole (84 g) of methylbutynol, 121 g (66 cm: 'of concentrated sulfuric acid, 300 em of water and 10 g of mereurioxide were required for the reaction. It was found that the solution contains HgSO and free H @ SO4.
It has now been found that yields of 80 to 857 (, can be obtained without difficulty under more suitable conditions. The process modifications which lead to this improvement are enumerated below.
Mixing must take place at temperatures not exceeding 35 C and the amount of sulfuric acid, including that in the form of lercuric sulphate, must not exceed 66 g per gramol of alcohol, after which the mixture is heated sufficiently to complete the water attachment , drives off the formed oxyketone by steam distillation and separates it from the steam distillate.
(All figures relating to acid relate to sulfuric acid with a specific gravity of 1.84.) These measures not only increase the yield of the desired products by suppressing side reactions, but they also reduce the mercuric salt to mercurosa. iron and metallic mercury so that the mercuric salt solution can be reused one or more times.
So you can reuse the catalyst solution (acidic mercury sulfate solution) several times without reducing the yield, and if the catalytic effect decreases, which is noticeable in a reduction in the yield, the mercuric salt can easily and cheaply by oxidation, preferably with smoking Sulfuric acid, can be converted back into a state in which it can be reused with a new approach to the starting material.
The process, which is the subject of the present invention, therefore proceeds as follows: According to the invention, the water system is carried out on the triple bond of an acetylene alcohol by mixing an acidic aqueous solution of mercuric sulfate with such an alcohol, with temperatures being used at Tem works below 35 ° C, and the amount of sulfuric acid, including that present as mercury sulfate, does not exceed 66 g per gram molecule of the alcohol, the mixture is heated sufficiently to bring the reaction to an end,
the oxyketone formed is driven off by steam distillation and then separated from the distillate.
To a mixture of 360 cm @ water, 36 cm- '(66 g) conc. Sulfuric acid and about 10 g of mercuric dioxide (or the equivalent amount of mercuric sulfate and sulfuric acid) are slowly added 1 gramol of the alkylbutynol (84 g when using methylbutynol) with stirring.
It is advisable to add the first drops at 25-30 ° C and after the reaction has started, which can be seen from the formation of a white organic mercury compound, lower the temperature to 0-20 ° C and keep it in this range until the said butynol is added.
The reaction mixture is then heated to 60 to 100 ° C. for 2 hours, stirring is continued, after which the steam distillation takes place. For each gramol of the starting material, distillation should take place until 1.5 liters of distillate has passed over.
The residue of the steam distillation is brought to its original volume of 400 cm by concentration or dilution and is. then ready, nice with me. the butynol to be used in the next batch.
This procedure can be repeated several times with this solution, the number of repetitions depending on the starting material. The catalyst solution can be used six times with methylbutynol, four times with the ethyl compound and three times with the isobittyl compound.
The number of uses depends mainly on the extent of the side reactions occurring which reduce the mercuric oxide to the mercurous salt or metallic mercury. When the catalytic activity of the solution is exhausted, it contains practically all of the mercury as metal or mercury salt in the residue at the bottom of the reaction vessel, together with a small amount of non-distillable resin.
If this residue is treated, preferably at an elevated temperature. with fuming sulfuric acid, all organic matter present is destroyed. and the mercury is converted back into mercury sulfate, which can be used for a number of other approaches.
The work-up of the steam distillate, which receives the desired organic reaction products (i.e. the oxyketones), gives rise to various possibilities. If the product is insoluble in water, it is separated and distilled, preferably after azeotropic drying with solvents such as benzene and carbon tetrachloride. If the product is water-soluble, which is especially true for the lower members of the group, the same can be done by adding carrion salts.
Separate potassium carbonate, after which it is first distilled with benzene to azeotropically distill adhering water, after which it can be distilled under normal pressure or in vacuo.
Two less cumbersome options were found. It is possible to distill the steam distillate obtained (e.g. the methylbutynol) in a column, where practically all of the product is concentrated in the distillate after a third of the total liquid has distilled over. The product can then be treated as prescribed above for the original solution.
It is of course possible to remove all of the water from the original steam distillate by azeotropic distillation using a suitable solvent such as benzene or carbon tetrachloride.
Further isolation methods are the selective adsorption on suitable adsorbents (z. B. activated charcoal or silica gel) or the selective extraction with water-insoluble solvents that have a suitable distribution coefficient for the desired reaction product. have. It has been shown that esters are particularly suitable for the latter purpose. If z. For example, if an aqueous solution of methylbutanols is shaken with the same volume of butyl acetate, 66% of the methylbutanolone go into the upper layer. about.
The following examples show how the invention can be put into practice. Unless otherwise stated, the parts mean parts by weight.
Example 1: To a well-stirred mixture of 720 parts of water, 132.5 parts of concentrated sulfuric acid (weight 1.84) and 15 parts of iVercurisulfate (or the equivalent amounts of sulfuric acid and mercuric oxide) 155 parts of methyl butynol are slowly added, with the temperature being kept below 10 C by cooling from the outside, as stated above, during this addition. A white precipitate forms, which gradually disappears again in the course of the reaction. When the spontaneous reaction has ended, the mixture is refluxed for another hour and then distilled with steam.
3000 parts of distillate are collected. You will e.g. B. salted out with anhydrous potassium carbonate and the oil (about 200 parts) azeotropically ent watered with 40 parts of benzene, whereupon the product is distilled with a column. Up to 150 parts of methylbutanolone are obtained, that is 81% of theory. Boiling point: 138-13J / 760 mm. You can also win small amounts of a first run and a higher-boiling residue.
The residue from the steam distillation was concentrated to its original volume (800 parts for 155 parts of methylbutynol) and used directly for the next batch. In two test series carried out according to this example, the following results were obtained:

and some methyl ethyl ketone. Repeating the experiment with the residue from the steam distillation, which was brought to a volume of 1600 parts by volume, gave practically the same result, that is to say a yield of about 90%.
It goes without saying that after the treatment of the acidic mercury sulfate with the acetylene alcohol, some of the mercury sulfate is reduced to mercury sulfate or free mercury or both, but the presence of these substances does not interfere with the steam distillation.
Since the mercury in the reaction mixture can be used as a mercury and mereuro compound with or without free mercury, the term “containing mercury” is introduced to include all three manifestations.
It is clear that in certain cases some free mercury can also pass over during steam distillation. This will be deposited at the bottom of the steam distillation unit and can be separated and reused after it has been converted back into the mereuris sulfate with fuming sulfuric acid.
