Rail anchoring device. This invention relates to a general hook jaw type rail anchoring device, formed from a metal bar.
Attempts have already been made to fashion this general type of anchor piece from a piece of angle iron which does not require, when applied to a rail, the cooperation of a base plate; these attempts did not give entirely satisfactory results, since the bending forces undergone by the bar while it was bent to forge the hook not being. applied, uniformly on the two wings of the angle iron, the part located at the end of the hook undergone a lateral deformation with respect to the vertical plane of the main body of the anchoring piece, which had the effect of reducing its force die, clamping when this part was applied to a rail.
The object of the present invention is a positive rail anchoring device, characterized in that it comprises a bar bent at one of its ends in the form of a hook, so as to include a part passing under the rail. and a jaw bearing on the upper face of a wing of the shoe of the rail, the part of said device which passes under the rail having the form of an angle, while the part which constitutes the jaw has a T-shaped cross section .
This device does not require the cooperation of a base plate, can therefore be used in railway tracks where the rails rest directly on wooden sleepers or in other tracks using footings or plates. seat, but where they do not come into contact with the anchoring part.
According to the present invention, a bar is used having transverse cross sections of different profiles to constitute an anchoring piece whose body can be relatively narrow, which increases its effective clamping on the adjacent edges of the shoe of the rail. when it is subjected near the jaw to pressure forces tending to make it pivot about a vertical axis.
The different cross sections of the bar can be established in such a way that the bending pressure required to bend the weft into a hook shape can be exerted evenly on the sides.
opposite a reinforcing rib which extends around the hook and over the entire length of the body of the anchoring piece, without applying direct pressure to this rib. so that the latter remains free to elongate both in the longitudinal direction and the transverse direction of the bar during the bending operation.
Zinc embodiment of the object of the invention is shown, by way of example, in the accompanying drawing, in which: FIG. 1 is a side view of a rail anchor device applied to a section of a railway track in the position desired to bear against a vertical face of a sleeper.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device shown in FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 is an end view of the anchoring device, as seen when looking from left to right in FIG. 1, and showing how the lower part of the body of the anchoring device rests flat against the vertical face of a cross member.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the anchoring device shown in fit 1, 2 and 3.
Figs. 5 and 6 are plan and side views, respectively, of a metal bar used in the manufacture of the anchoring device.
Figs. 7 and 8 are plan and side views, respectively, of the bar shown in FIGS. 5 and 6, after some parts have been cut out before so ner the anchoring device.
Fig. 9 is a side view showing somewhat schematically an apparatus for shaping the anchoring device, and FIG. 10 is a vertical section taken along line 10-10 of FIG. 9.
In fig. 1 to 4, 10 designates a railway rail and 11 one of the sleepers which support the rail. The rail can be held in place by means of clamps 12 or by any other fixing device.
The rail anchoring device comprises a main body designated generally by the reference numeral 13. This main body, provided to fit under the shoe of the rail, is provided at one end with a part hook-shaped 14. This hook constitutes the upper and lower jaws 15 and 16, intended to respectively clamp the top and the bottom of one of the wings of the shoe of the rail 10 when the anchoring device occupies its position of service. The other end of the main body of the anchoring device is pushed back to form a wedging shoulder 17 capable of resting on the edge of the shoe of the rail, above its lower edge, so as to lock the device on the rail.
The body of the anchoring device preferably takes the form of an angle having a horizontal flange 18, intended to bear against the underside of the shoe of the rail, and a vertical flange 19 which bears against the vertical face of the cross member 11. The upper jaw 15 of the anchoring device preferably has a T-shaped transverse profile, and is somewhat wider than the body 13. The central web 20 of the T </ B section > @ is connected to the vertical wing 19 of the body, so as to form a continuous reinforcing rib which extends around the elbow 14 and over the entire length of the body 13.
The horizontal wing 21, on one side of the anchoring device, extends over the entire length of the body 13 and also goes around the elbow 14, but the horizontal wing 22 of the bar extends only along the part of the device which constitutes the upper jaw and ends at a point of the elbow of the part constituting the hook, so that it overhangs the upper face of the cross member.
The anchoring device is applied in its service position on the shoe of the rail by driving out the hooked part of the device on one of the wings of the shoe, until the shoulder 17 blocks the device by hooking it. on the lower edge of the opposite side of the rail shoe.
When the anchoring device is applied to the rail, the hook 14, formed by the upper jaw 15 and by the lower jaw 16, opens slightly and, closing when the shoulder 17 has hooked on the edge of the shoe, causes an energetic tightening on the upper face and the lower face of the shoe -du rail.
The hook-shaped portion of the jaw is set up so as to provide a gap 23 between the underside of the jaw 15 and the edge of the wing, of the pad with which the jaw engages, so that it- This can crash towards the shoe of the rail and thus disengages so that it can be removed when a wheel which has derailed or another heavy object strikes the part of the device forming the jaw.
The reinforcing rib of the jaw 15 present, as shown in FIG. 1 of the drawing, oblique surfaces 24 and 25 inclined in opposite directions, which, under the impact of a wheel protruding from the rail or from another object, can reject this object outside the wing of the skate from the rail or away from the rail anchoring device, thus preventing this impact on the jaw from driving the jaw into the wing of the rail shoe or seriously damaging the latter in any other way.
The manner in which the inclined surfaces 24 and 25 act to prevent the rail shoe from being damaged. spring from fig. 1 of the drawing. In this fig. 1, the wheels of a wagon, exited from the rails, are shown in two positions where they are liable to strike the reinforcing rib 20 of the jaw 15 of the anchoring device. In one of these positions, the flange 26 of a derailed wheel rolls along the upper surface of the rail shoe in the desired direction to strike the inclined surface 25 of the reinforcing rib 20.
In this case, there is produced between the flange 26 of the wheel and the surface 25 of the jaw of the anchoring device, a wedge effect sufficient to defor mer this jaw and release it from the rail. If a derailed wheel is in the position indicated by reference numeral 27, so as to be able to strike the inclined surface 24 of the jaw 15 of the anchoring device, the wheel will be deflected out of the shoe of the rail and into at the same time the jaw will be pushed back up and down, towards the upper face of the shoe of the rail according to the size of the void 23, and as a result of this deformation of the jaw, the anchoring device will be released from the rail.
The anchoring device described above and shown in FIGS. 1 to 4, inclusive, is intended particularly for use where the railroad track is supported directly on the top face of a wooden sleeper or in other cases where one cannot rely on clamping the rail on a base plate to prevent the rail from moving. In either case, it is advisable that the lower edge of the body of the anchoring device bears against the vertical face of a cross member, so that pressure tends to rotate the device around a horizontal axis produces an increase in the clamping force on the rail between the edge 28 of the upper jaw 15 and the edge 29 of the lower jaw 16.
By making the jaw 15 of the device a little wider than the body, it is given the desired width to withstand the great pressure exerted and, at the same time, it produces a clamping action, with the force of a lever, on the upper and lower faces of the rail shoe,
to the right of this ridge 28 of the upper jaw and to the right of the lower ridge 29 of the lower jaw. During the backward movement of the rail which tends to push the second body 19 of the anchoring device against the ballast 30, a clamping is exerted in the manner of a lever on the upper and lower faces of the rail, between the edge 31 of the upper jaw - and the ridge 32 of the lower jaw.
The reduced width of the body of the anchoring device has the effect of ensuring an increased clamping on the rail, between the edge 33 of the jaw 15 and the edge 34 of the wedging shoulder 17, when the end of the jaw of the device is subjected to a pressure tending to make it pivot about a vertical axis.
The anchoring device shown here is preferably made by means of a rolled steel bar of initial transverse sectian in T from one end of its length to the other, as shown in the figures. fig. 5 and 6. However, the bar or blank with which the anchoring device is formed can be rolled or otherwise made with a cross section having another desired shape.
When the anchoring device is made of a bar in T, one of the horizontal wings of this bar is cut from a point 36, as shown in fig. 7 and 8, so that at one of its ends the bar has its full width, while in another part it has only a reduced width.
The bar is then placed on the anvil table 37 of a suitable press and subjected to compression by means of a die 38 to form the wedging shoulder 17 and part of the curve 14. The body of the device anchor is held firmly by the die 38 while the end of the bar is bent around the anvil 37. This folding operation is performed by means of a bending arm 39. This arm is preferably forked. so that the end 40 rests on the horizontal wings 21 and 22 of the bar on both sides of the central reinforcing rib 20.
The bending pressure being exerted uniformly on the bar, on both sides of the central rib, the core 20 is free to stretch both longitudinally and vertically during the bending operation. Due to this longitudinal and transverse elongation of the central core 20, the latter takes a generally triangular shape and thus provides. the oblique planes 24 and 25 inclined in opposite directions, described above, and which form the angle 41.
When the anchoring device is applied to a rail, this angle is at a significant distance from the lateral face of the head of the rail, outside the latter, so that a wagon wheel extended. of the rail and rolling along it, on the runner of the rail, meets the inclined surface 25, as previously described, and pushes back the jaw of the device, which it moves away from the rail, and thus cannot not take support and roll over the anchoring device.
