System for recording or playing back picture or picture sound films. The present invention relates to a system without a mechanical, intermittently acting closure device for recording or reproducing images or images. Image sound films, in which system the film is exposed or intermittently exposed with interposition of dark pauses for the image change. is mapped.
The purpose of the invention is to create means by which it is practically made light to let the camera or projector work without a shutter.
It has already been proposed in systems of this type to feed an arc lamp with an intermittent current in such a way that light was generated only when the image was stationary. With these systems, one always had to ensure that the arc was ignited and extinguished in good time. The early ignition could be promoted by applying an increased voltage for a short period of time. Special, disk-like, rotating electrodes together with a blow magnet were used to extinguish the fire. However, this proposal has not resulted in practical success.
It is also known to run the film strip continuously, without optical compensation means, and to feed each image only for a very short time by means of a discharge tube filled with gas or mercury vapor, which is fed with very short electrical surges synchronously with the image frequency will shine through. This system was also not implemented in practice.
The invention relates to a new system for recording or playing back picture or picture sound films, in the latter case the picture intermittently, e.g. B. on a screen is projected.
This is to be understood as meaning that the film moves through the apparatus in the usual way either intermittently or continuously, although in the latter case the projection must also be carried out intermittently by means of optical compensation. In both cases, in the known systems, in contrast to the invention, a closure device is provided by which the projection is interrupted during the shifting of the image.
According to the invention, this closure device is made superfluous that a cooled high-pressure metal vapor discharge tube with a constricted discharge path is used as the light source, that an alternating current source is used to feed this tube, the frequency of which is equal to or a whole multiple of the image frequency, and that the dark period .- '15 to 5 () 9o' is the time elapsing between two successive image changes.
One would expect that the periodic curve, which indicates the amount of light emitted as a function of time, would correspond to the curve as a double-phase rectified alternating current. This is also approximately the case with discharge tubes with a low gas or vapor pressure of the order of magnitude of, for example, 1 mm. If, however, the pressure is chosen to be higher, the curve takes on a completely different shape, presumably as a result of the greater heat capacity and the higher breakdown voltage. At very high pressures, i.e. over 6 atm. up to about 250 atm., there is a time interval in which practically no light is emitted before every time interval in which a strong light emission takes place.
An infinite number of variations in the shape of the curve are possible through a suitable choice of the ratio between the ignition voltage of the tube and the peak value of the mains voltage. It is even possible to give it an approximately sinusoidal shape with relatively wide valleys.
This property of the curve can now be used with advantage to drive the film and the supply of the light source in relation to each other in such a way that the time interval in which the images are cloned exactly coincides with your time interval during this the lamp produces practically no light, in other words, the shift of the image takes place exactly in a valley of the light emission, so that a shutter device is unnecessary.
If you want to maintain the usual frame rate of 24 frames per second, the frequency of the alternating feed current for the discharge tube can be chosen appropriately to \ 24 or 48 Hertz on the basis of the above. If there are no particular reasons for using the 34 Hertz image frequency, it is advisable to increase the image frequency to 25 Hertz, since the alternating current frequency can then be selected to be 5 or 50 Hertz, which is the normal frequency Network frequency of 50 Hertz results in a cheaper system.
The drive for advancing the film can then conveniently be provided by a synchronous motor. To set the correct phase position between the lamps and the drive, a suitable control device such. B. a slidable stator of the synchronous motor or a rotary transformer can be provided.
In principle, the frequency of the alternating current can be any whole multiple of the image frequency. However, if the frequency is chosen too high, so who the dark periods are relatively so short. that shifting the image in this short time interval entails technical difficulties and excessive stress on the film.
As already mentioned above, it is only cooled high pressure metal vapor discharge tubes with a constricted discharge path, in particular water-cooled mercury vapor tubes, which are suitable for carrying out the idea of the invention. It is not possible to state exactly how high this pressure should be, as this depends on the requirements placed on the quality of the projected image and which filling is used in the tube.
However, it has been found that, in particular, liquid-cooled mercury high-pressure vapor discharge tubes with a curved discharge path, which fill a gas and, during operation, have a mercury vapor pressure of over 6 atm., E.g. B. 100 Alm. Have, and are provided with at least one glow electrode, which protrudes only a little from a surrounding, mercury or amalgam containing, vaporizable metal mass, are ideally suited for the intended purpose.
With . of the <B> en </B> term discharge tubes can have a surface area of 100,000 int. Candles per cm2 and more, e.g. B. 150,000 Int. Candles per cm = can be achieved, and it has been found that the light spectrum of these discharge tubes also largely meets the conditions to be set for projection purposes.
Although the invention is described above with reference to a projection system, it is also important for recording purposes. In this case, discharge tubes are used to illuminate the scene being recorded, which have a special periodic light emission in a manner similar to that described above for the light source of a projection system.
By synchronizing the periodic film movement in the camera and the likewise periodic light emission of the light sources used to illuminate the scene, a shutter is superfluous.
An embodiment of the invention is explained in more detail with the aid of the drawing. Fig. 1 shows as a function of time the curves of the mains voltage, the voltage at the terminals of the tube and the Lichtaus transmission of a discharge tube with niedri gem gas and respectively. Steam pressure of for example 1 mm.
2 shows the same curves for a cooled high-pressure metal vapor discharge tube which is fed with an alternating current frequency which corresponds to the image frequency. Corresponding parts and curves with the same reference numerals are given in the figures.
In Fig. 1, A is the line voltage curve. B is the curve of the terminal voltage of a discharge tube with low gas respectively. Vapor pressure. The light emission curve is denoted by C. The result is that the light emission curve corresponds approximately to the curve of a double-phase rectified alternating current. If the Lichtaus transmission curve has the shape shown in this figure, it is not easily used for the intended purpose.
In Fig. 2 the same curves are shown for a high pressure metal vapor discharge tube with a constricted discharge path, which in operation a vapor pressure of about 100 atm. or more. Here, too, there is before each time interval r in which a strong light emission takes place, a time interval s in which practically no light is emitted (dark period).
The alternating current frequency is equal to the frame rate. The time that elapses between two successive image changes, that is to say the time that an image, including the advancement of the image, needs for projection, is denoted by p. The time it takes to advance is denoted by q and is represented by a rectangle for the sake of clarity. The periods s given in this figure (dark periods), twice per period p, together amount to about 25 to 50 of this period.
If the film drive and the supply of the tube by the alternating current source are coordinated with one another in such a way that the time q coincides for the most part with the time s, as shown in the figure, the presentation of the image will be flawless.
