Installation for obtaining relief views. The object of the present invention is an installation for obtaining views in. re lief. This installation makes it possible to give several spectators at the same time the sensation of perceiving an image in relief, without these spectators having to provide themselves with any individual optical system.
This installation is characterized by a projection device with a single objective, a screen, a device having at least two reflecting elements, at least one of which is adjustable, and by at least one grid situated between this device and the screen, the elements reflectors being arranged so that they deflect the light beams projected by the projection device,
from a stereoscopic pair of distinct images so that they fall on the screen so that the extensions of the sections between the device and the grid of those of the rays of each beam which pass through the center optics of the objective intersect at a point distinct from the corresponding point of the other beam, the whole established so that observers, placed at determined points and looking in the direction of the screen,
only perceive with the left eye the parts of the image formed on the screen by the rays of one of the beams and with the right eye only the parts of the image formed on the screen by the - rays of the other beam, in order that they have the sensation of perceiving a raised image.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, by partial views and diagrams, an embodiment of the object of the invention as well as detailed variants of this embodiment.

Fig. 3 -is a vertical section of an assembly comprising two grids and a screen, the latter operating by translucency; Fig. 4 is a schematic view illustrating the operation of the embodiment of the installation; Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional tick diagram showing a first variant of this embodiment of the installation;
Fig. 6 is a partial plan view showing a variant of detail of the device shown in FIG. 1; Fig. 7 is a schematic perspective view showing two arrangements of the reflecting organs of a variant of the device shown in FIG. 1; The schematic figure 8 gives, in plan and elevation, the particular arrangement of the reflecting members of another variant of the device shown in FIG. 1;
Fig. 9 is a diagrammatic plan showing the respective positions of the reflecting members of a third variant of the device shown in FIG. 1; Fig. 10 is a plan view showing schematically the operation of a second variant of the embodiment of the installation; Fig. 11 is a plan view showing schematically the operation of a third variant of the embodiment of the installation.
In the embodiment of the installation partially shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 and the operation of which is illustrated by schematic figure .1, the device having the reflecting elements comprises four mirrors Ml, lVl2, M3 and M. ,, mounted on a support .d, which can be, for example, a wooden plan or a metal plate with reinforced edges.
This support is secured to the one-lens projection device, not shown, for example a cinema projection device, by means of screws and wing nuts B and C. (This support could also be placed in front of the projection apparatus, at a suitable height.) This device could also include members for its adaptation to a single-lens camera for taking stereoscopic pairs of distinct images.
The mirrors M1 and M.1 each define a vertical plane and are each fixed. with a base S which can slide along the slides D and D ', by the operation of the rod T and are arranged on both sides and the other side of the MZ and M3 mirrors placed in front of the lens. The screw V, acting on the rod T via the part F, enables the mirror Ml, respectively M4, to be blocked in each of the positions that it is likely to take.
By maneuvering the rods T, the distance of the points Ol and 02 is varied. The planes of reflection of the mirrors 1l1 and M4 intersect. perpendicular to the optical axis of the lens.
The mirrors! Î2_ and M3, as well as the mirror 11l are each introduced into a sheet metal frame c. This frame has, for the mirror M1, two curved parts allowing it to be fixed to the base S.
For the MZ and M3 mirrors, the frames c each have a recurved part f, pierced with a hole through which a screw la passes, which allows the mirrors M to be rotated simultaneously. </ U> and wire ,, in opposite directions, around vertical axes, acting on screw V '. The latter advances or retracts the rod T 'which acts on the frames of the mirrors M = and I11., Via the rollers r'. ITn coil spring R 'ensures the contact of these frames with the rollers r'.
A graduation can be marked on the rod T '.
In order to be able to bring one of the two images projected onto the screen exactly at the height of the other, the mirror M4 can rotate around a horizontal axis i, under the impulse of the screw V ". A spring R "maintains contact between the frame c of mirror M4 and the end of screw V".
The two beams of rays coming from the objective are returned one by the mirror MZ on the mirror 111 and from there towards the screen and the other from the mirror M .. on the mirror M4 and from there also towards the 'screen.
The grid G and the screen E (fig. 2) are mounted on a common frame H, the grid being obtained by winding a black wire on two tubes, t1 and t, 2, of brass, for example, placed at the top. and at the bottom of the frame, which is of solid construction.
This winding is done in such a way that the strands of the wire are arranged in a plane and come to rest on two lists of wood or metal por as regularly spaced notches, all arranged so that the strands are vertical and rigorously parallel and equidistant. Two NI screws act on the two ends of the tube t1, through the plates p, to adjust the tension of the strands.
The screen is formed of a sheet of opaque white paper or a white canvas, mounted on a frame k., Which is arranged so as to come to rest on stops m of the frame H and held in place by any means. conch, for example by nails if the frame is made of wood. The plane of the screen is rigorously parallel to the plane in which the strands of the wire are located. The distance of these two planes is equal to
EMI0003.0006
where L is the distance of points 0, and 0., on the plane of the screen, 2 the distance of two consecutive strands, e the mean distance of the two eyes approximately 65 mm).
(See explanatory figure n0 4.) The points 0, and 0 @ are the points of convergence of the extensions of those of the rays reflected by the mirrors M1 and M4 which have passed through the optical center of the lens of the projector.
The fi-. 3 represents the grid-screen assembly of a variant of the installation which has just been described. In this variant, the screen operates by translucency. The wire is also wound around the tubes 4 and t_, but so that the strands form two grids G and G '. arranged on either side of the screen E.
The planes of the grids are parallel to the screen and their distances from the plane of the screen are respectively d and J '. The distance between points 0, and 0_ on the screen is as before
EMI0003.0025
Viewers are seated on the other side of the screen from the projector and their distance to the screen is equal to
EMI0003.0026
The distance 7 @ of two consecutive strands of the wire of each grid is chosen equal to a distance somewhat less than twice the diameter of the wire,
this is to prevent each strip of light coming onto the screen from encroaching on the two neighboring strips.
The value of À is the same for both grids.
The installation with the opaque screen works as follows: Using the projection apparatus, from a stereoscopic pair of distinct images, two light beams are projected, one of which is directed towards the screen by means of mirrors NIZ and Ml and the other by means of mirrors M3 and M4. Each pair of mirrors must naturally be arranged so as to reflect all of the rays of the corresponding beam on the screen which, as well as the grid, is perpendicular to the optical axis of the objective.
As seen above, the arrangement of the mirrors is such that each image of the couple is projected onto the screen from a virtual projection center which is distinct from that belonging to the other image of the full neck. The distance of the points 0, and 0 =, virtual projection centers, is equal to an odd multiple of the mean distance of the eyes or to this distance itself. The mobile arrangement of the mirrors of the device makes it possible to frame each image of the couple on the screen.
The screw V "makes it possible, for example, to bring the lower edges of the projected images exactly to one another.
The rays arriving on the screen having to pass through the grid, each image of the couple is composed on the screen of a series of narrow bands, of the same width and equidistant, between which are inserted the series of equidistant bands that includes the other image of the couple on the screen. Each band thus receives only rays forming part of one of the two beams projected from the stereoscopic pair of images.
It is easily understood that there are a certain number of locations from which an observer looking at the screen sees, with one eye, only bands illuminated by rays from one of the beams and, with the other eye, as bands illuminated by rays from the other beam. Among these positions, half give the desired correspondence of the pair of perceived images which gives the sensation of perceiving a single image in relief.
In the variant comprising a translucent screen (frosted glass plate, or white canvas, for example), the operation is the same as that which has just been described.
When the device comprising the mirrors is used in combination with a camera, which could be a cinematographic camera, the adjustment of the mirrors makes it possible, among other things, to adjust the distance of the virtual points 0, and 02, which then makes it possible to obtain, during the projection, a more or less pronounced relief.
The installation which has just been described presents a certain space requirement. If the screen operates by transparency, this bulkiness is particularly considerable, the distance of the projection apparatus from the screen not being able to drop below a certain limit. To reduce this bulk, this installation can be fitted with one or more reflecting members, arranged between the grid and the device comprising the mirrors M ,, M2, M3 and M4. These organs deflect the two beams of rays to finally send them onto the screen.
By thus breaking the path of the spokes, the bulkiness can be significantly reduced. Fig. 5 shows how one of these reflective organs could be arranged.
The projector could present a reflecting organ which deflects the rays of the two beams in the part of their path comprised between the pair of stereoscopic images and the objective. Depending on the layout of the installation,
There may also be an advantage in suppressing the installation of an additional reflecting member deflecting the rays of the two beams in the part of their path comprised between the objective and the mirrors M2 and M3. An arrangement of this type applied to a variant of the installation described is shown in FIG. 7 where the additional reflecting member M is shown in dotted lines.
Mirrors M ,, M, M3 and M4 could be replaced by full reflection prisms. We could also replace only the mirrors MZ and M ,,, for example, by total reflection sockets or just one of the mirrors M, JI =, 31, and J'14 . The other reflecting elements mentioned above could be mirrors or else total reflection prisms.
The device attached to the projection apparatus could, as shown in schematic figure 9, consist of only two reflecting members whose planes are vertical and situated at unequal distances from the objective, with unequal inclinations on the 'optical axis thereof.
In this variant e of e the installation, the adjustment of the distance 0,., 0 = would be obtained - by bringing the two reflecting elements closer or further away from the Objective 0. By rotating either one of the reflecting members or the two members around vertical axes, one would obtain the horizontal displacement of one of the projected images, relative to the other.
As this device has the peculiarity of reversing the images around an axis perpendicular to the axis a of the objective and parallel to the planes of the organs M, and M2, it would be necessary, if the pairs of stereoscopic views - spikes used for projection have not been taken by means of a similar device, to provide the installation with an additional reflecting member to straighten the images on the screen around a vertical axis.
The side mirrors 11, and M4 of the device shown in FIG. 1 define two planes intersecting perpendicularly to the optical axis of the objective, but these planes could, in a variant (see fig. 7, solid lines), intersect parallel to the optical axis.
This variant of the device makes it possible to use in the projection apparatus a film on which the direction of the width of each image corresponds to the direction of unwinding of the film, the two images of the pair being arranged one above. on the other in the direction of their height. -Bans another variant, the planes defined by the side mirrors are cou pent along a straight line oblique with respect to the optical axis.
In the variant of FIG. 8, the central reflecting elements 1L1 = and DIn are arranged so that iJI # returns the light beam coming from the lower image EFDC of the stereoscopic couple on the left lateral organ Ml, l 'other central member 1113 returning the beam from the upper image EFAB of the couple on the right side organ M.,. This variant allows the use of a film similar to that employed with the variant shown in FIG. 7.
In the variant according to FIG. 8, the film plane is vertical and it unfolds in a borizorital direction. The distance of points 0, and 02 can be adjusted, in the case of the device shown in fig. 1, by translation of the reflecting organs the terals. But one could also obtain this result by moving away or by bringing closer the two central reflecting elements of the objective 0.
In order to vary the distance 0 ,, 02, one could move parallel to itself only one of the four reflecting members, the line 0l, 0: 2 becoming in this case oblique with respect to the vertical plane con holding the optical axis of the lens. This does not present a very great drawback.
The position on the screen of one of the stereoscopic images, relative to the other, is regulated in the device shown in FIG. 1 by rotation in opposite directions of the two reflecting elements placed in front of the lens. However, in a variant of this device, it could be the lateral reflecting members which would be mounted to rotate about a vertical axis, the central reflecting members being in this case displaced by translation, the type of assembly remaining the same as above. It would also be possible to have only a single reflecting member rotatably mounted around a vertical axis.
The reflecting members 11, 11 and 1112, reflecting the same light beam, could both be mounted to rotate.
In a variant of the device shown in FIG. 1 where. these would be the side mirrors which would be mounted to rotate around vertical axes, they could be rotated simultaneously in the opposite direction by means of the members shown in FIG. 6, these organs comprising a rod carrying a thread on the right and a thread on the left. In this variant, the side mirrors could each be controlled separately by a screw.
The wire forming the grid (s) is a wire of any section which will preferably be smooth. We could take some linen thread. We could also take a metal wire or rubber wire, for example.
The grid could also be formed of bands of opaque material, equidistant and stretched so that their edges are parallel. The grid could be formed in the same way as with the wire, for example, and the bands could, for example, be metal bands.
We could also use for. the Moon grid is a thin metal plate presenting a series of parallel and equidistant slots.
The grid could also be constituted by a transparent support, for example a glass plate, carrying opaque, equidistant lines. One could, for example, print, by a photographic process, equidistant black lines on a glass plate. One could also form the grid by filling with opaque material narrow and equidistant grooves, formed in a plate that of a substance allowing light to pass.
In the variant of the installation, the operation of which is illustrated in FIG. 11, the screen E operates by transparency and the grids G and G 'are each formed by a plate of material allowing light to pass. These grids are arranged on either side of the screen and the face of each of these grids opposite to that facing the screen is dulated so as to form a series of convex cylindrical surfaces, of the same dimensions and of vertical, parallel and equidistant axes, each of these surfaces acting as the converging, cylindrical mesh.
The corrugated surface plate can be applied to a glass plate or mounted in a rigid frame. The rays of the beam 0, which will strike the cylindrical surface NQ are refracted by the latter and will be concentrated on the screen, which may be in de-polished glass, following a narrow band P, from which they are distributed in all the departments. Those of the rays coming from the P band which will strike the cylindrical surface ÜZ are refracted by the latter and will concentrate on the pupil of the left eye.
Those indicated in dotted lines, coming from this same band, will converge at a point which gives another suitable position of the pupil of the left eye. The rays of the beam 0. which will strike the surface N Q are concentrated by the latter along a line e from which they are diffused by the ground glass in all directions. Those of the rays coming from the R band which will strike the X Y surface are refracted by the latter and will concentrate on the pupil of the right eye.
We also get the sensation of perceiving a raised image. .
The common focal length f of the cylindrical lenses, the distance from the axes of two successive lenses (#), the distance A from the grid G to the screen, the distance from the points Oz and OZ to. the screen (L) and the mean distance of the two eyes (e) are related by the relations:
EMI0006.0024
The common focal length f of the cylindrical lenses of the second grid G ', the distance from the spectators to the screen (L') and the distance 0 'of the grid G' to the screen are linked by relationships:
EMI0006.0028
The value of # is the same for both grids.
The variant of the installation which has just been described has the advantage that the grids give less dispersion to the light rays than the grids whose operation is based solely on the opacity of certain elements.
The grooves separating the cylindrical surfaces from one another could be partially filled in by means of an opaque material.
The grid used could also have opaque parts delimiting spaces allowing light to pass, the edges of these spaces being able to be parallel, rectilinear and oblique or parallel and curvilinear. In the case of grids with cylindrical lenses, the axes of these lenses could also be omitted. Grids with a corrugated surface could also be provided forming a series of convex surfaces with equidistant and curvilinear parallel axes.
