Method of preventing harmful sulfation of the positive plates of lead collectors. The invention relates to a method for preventing harmful sulfation of the positive plates of lead collectors, in which the paste of the positive plates is treated with a chemical substance which reacts with the paste in such a way that on the surface: the positive plates gas evolution occurs.
The plates are expediently handled in the unloaded state, either before loading or after unloading.
During the evolution of gas, the plates are preferably immersed in sulfuric acid or sulfuric acid is applied to the plates before the evolution of gas has ceased, so that after the evolution of gas on the surface of the plates, the pores of the plates are filled with sulfuric acid will.
The development of gas can be achieved by spraying a substance as evenly as possible over the uncharged plates which contains lead peroxide: see above. reacts that an inert or reducing gas is formed on the surface: the plate.
One embodiment is that .the acid is emptied from the cell when .the cell is discharged and that the plates are treated with a substance: that when it comes into contact with the lead peroxide of the positive plates wetted by sulfuric acid comes, an inert or reducing gas is developed. A 10 volume percent solution of hydrogen peroxide is suitable for this purpose. It is known that hydrogen peroxide can act as a reducing agent by absorbing oxygen from another substance and releasing molecular oxygen.
A rapid evolution of oxygen occurs when hydrogen peroxide is applied to the plates.
Another substance that has a similar effect to hydrogen peroxide is a solution of oxalic acid, for example a ten percent oxalic acid solution. Is oxalic acid. Particularly suitable for treatment if the plates are to be kept dry after treatment. For this purpose, the new plate is either sprayed with ten percent oxalic acid solution before loading or after the usual short first loading or dipped in it and then allowed to dry.
If the plates treated in this way are put into a cell or battery, so. the battery behaves in the same way as a battery that has been treated after charging and discharging.
When the reagents are selected for the exercise of the method described, it is advisable to avoid those substances which would form harmful substances such as nitric acid, which would attack the plates or another metal or oxide on the cell during charging negative plates.
The invention has the advantage that the tendency of the lead sulfate to form coatings on the positive plates is prevented and that if such a coating has already formed before the treatment described, it disappears after the treatment and falls to the floor the cell falls. The effectiveness of the cell in use is thereby significantly improved by increasing the cell's capacity and its ability to recover.
It has been shown that a new battery which has been treated in the manner described maintains its maximum effectiveness for much longer than an untreated battery.
The method of the invention can be applied to new or old batteries. When a newly assembled battery that is not yet filled with acid and not yet charged is treated
