Process for the production of an oxygen-free solution of carbon oxide and hydrogen. For the production of methyl alcohol and other oxygen-containing organic compounds by synthesis in the presence of catalysts, one generally uses mixtures of hydrogen and coblene oxide, in which the two gases, depending on the working conditions chosen and the products that one wishes to obtain, are fairly common different ratios are included.
These mixtures can be obtained in various ways, the most common of which are the decomposition of hydrocarbons carried out at elevated temperature with oxygen or oxygen-containing substances and the gasification of solid fuels. One can also decompose hydrocarbons without oxygen or substances containing oxygen and add a gas containing carbon oxide to the gas thus produced.
It must be noted, however, that the mixtures obtained with the above procedures do not always have the desired composition, but they often contain an excess of one of the two components, so that it is necessary to adjust their composition by adding other suitable gases improve. If the insufficient component is the carbon oxide, it is worth adding carbon oxide-rich gas, which can be obtained by gasifying coke with oxygen or with mixtures of oxygen and carbonic acid or water vapor.
If, on the other hand, the insufficient component is hydrogen, the missing amount of this gas can be added after it has been prepared by one of the methods used in industry for this purpose that provide it in sufficient purity.
The latter case can arise, for example, if, if water gas is available, a mixture of carbon oxide and hydrogen intended for the production of synthetic methyl alcohol is to be prepared, a mixture in which the two gases in the volumetric ratio of 1 C0: 2H2 should be included.
The water gas usually has the following approximate composition: CO: 40%, H2: 50%, C02:
5 0/0, N2: 5% and after event. Removal of the 002: CO: 42.1%, 112: 52.6%, N2: 5.3%; In order to obtain the desired mixture, it is necessary to add 30 volumes of hydrogen to 100 volumes of crude water gas or 31.6 volumes of hydrogen to 100 volumes of the water gas freed from the carbonic acid.
The addition of hydrogen, however, brings with it an inconvenience that arises from the fact that this gas is often contaminated with oxygen. This contamination is generally present in both. prepared by means of electrolysis of water; as is contained in hydrogen produced by other processes, and is usually also contained in hydrogen which has been stored for a certain time in wet gas containers.
As soon as the mixtures of carbon oxide and hydrogen containing even small amounts of oxygen reach the cata- lysts, the oxygen reacts in a practically complete manner with a corresponding amount of hydrogen, causing local overheating, which affects both the activity of the catalysts as well are detrimental to the good maintenance of the catalytic apparatus and favor the occurrence of side reactions.
The present invention relates to a very simple process for the production of an oxygen-free mixture of carbon oxide and hydrogen, which is prepared by means of the addition of what hydrogen to a gas obtained by gasification of solid fuels. The main advantages of this process are that it does not require any additional equipment, and that it does not require any hydrogen consumption, as is the case with conventional hydrogen cleaning processes, processes in which the oxygen is allowed to react with a corresponding amount of hydrogen.
The present method consists in conveying hydrogen contaminated with oxygen into the gas generator itself, in which the gasification of the solid fuels is carried out, by ensuring that it reaches a zone in which the temperature is so high that the oxygen contained in the hydrogen reacts with the fuel, for example the reaction 2C + 02 = 2C0 or C + 02 = C02 takes place.
If, of course, air, oxygen or gas mixtures containing oxygen are used for the gasification of the fuels, then it is advisable to ensure that: the hydrogen is fed into a zone where the gasification is complete and where there is no need to fear that the hydrogen introduced in this way is added to mix with the oxygen used for gasification. If the gas generator is not operating continuously, the hydrogen is only introduced during the phase in which the gas used to produce the desired mixture is generated.
