Device for changing speed and direction of rotation. The object of the invention is a device for changing the speed and direction of rotation. characterized on the one hand by a pinion wedged on a driving shaft and driving, by means of planetary wheels carried by a cage, a ring gear wedged on a driven shaft, on the other hand, by pistons which are driven by the shaft engine and which move in cylinders carried by said cage and containing a fluid, finally. by means producing an adjustable resistance opposed to the movements of the pistons and by: other means opposing an adjustable resistance to the rotation of the cage.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section thereof; Fig. 2 is a section taken along line 2-2 of FIG. 1, and FIG. 3 is a section taken along line 3-3 of FIG. 1.
In the example shown, a drive shaft a has a pinion b meshing with three planetary wheels c carried by a cage d; said planetary wheels c mesh. also with the internal toothing e. of a drum e1 fixed to the driven shaft f which is hollowed out at fi and forms a bearing for the thinned end ai of the shaft a, which enters the driven shaft, as shown in fig. 1.
The planetary wheels c can rotate on axes d1 carried by the cage d; the latter also carries two cylinders g containing a liquid and pistons h actuated by a cam k fixed to the motor shaft. Another plate 1 fixed to the cylinders is journaled around the drive shaft on the side opposite to the cage -of the planetary wheels; the rods h1 -of the pistons slide in this plate 1, which is provided in its center with a ball bearing <B> il </B> allowing the motor shaft to rotate freely.
The cylinders g are carried, on the other hand, by a .autre drum m which is fixed to the. planetary wheel cage. The rods h 'of the pistons are provided at their ends with rollers h2 which press against the cam k, so as to be actuated by it, when the motor shaft has rotated. The face of the cam k is conical, as shown at the '; "and the rollers h \ le are also at the same angle.
The inclination of the surface k '- must be such that the number of revolutions corresponding to the end of the largest diameter of the roller h2 is exactly equal to the number of revolutions corresponding to the end of the smallest diameter; otherwise there would be a harmful sliding of the rollers on the cam.
The heads g 'of the cylinders g are interconnected by a pipe n which is of large diameter in order to reduce to. a minimum the resistance to the passage of the liquid which circulates between the cylinders and the connecting pipe. Some initial pressure is given to this liquid by screwing the filler cap to maintain a contact pressure of the rollers h2 on the. surface of the cam k. Said pipe n, is divided on each side of the motor shaft a. as shown in the, fig, d, and is provided in its center with a bearing at. balls a 'receiving the motor shaft a.
By dividing the. connecting pipe -on each side of the motor shaft a, not only is created the balance, but also a place for an additional bearing for the shaft a. A valve of any shape could be provided to control the passage of liquid which is pumped back and forth to the cylinders by the reciprocating motion of the pistons. There is shown a valve comprising a sleeve g2 placed in one of the cylinders g. so that the piston h goes. and comes in the sleeve g2 and not in the cylinder g directly.
This sleeve 9 'is provided at its head with a control pin g' which passes through the head g 'da cylinder g and in the. head in 'of the drum <I> m. </I> A bearing, thrust o ball is -disposed between the head of the sleeve <B> 9 </B> 2 and the head g'. of the cylinder- g.
The sleeve g \ is pierced at g 'with an opening such that, by the rotation of l :, sleeve g \ in the cylinder g, the opening g4 corresponds with an opening g' in the wall of the cylinder, through which l Oil flow from cylinder to cylinder is controlled. The members described are mounted between them supports p and q, which are carried by which the gear is fixed. Lons r- are arranged between the two supports for a goal which will be discussed below.
The motor shaft a is journaled in the support p. as shown at p ', while the driven shaft is journalled in the support q as shown at q'.
The means for rotating the sleeve g \ to. the interior of the cylinder comprises an arm g fixed to the axis g ', said arm; being connected by a connecting rod g with an arm g 'pivoted in g'- on the drum m .. A spring g <B> \ </B> pulls on the arm g' and tends to. move the latter in a direction closing the valve.
Consoles g 'are provided on the drum mra in which a rod g'2 is mounted so as to be able to slide, and having at its upper end a roller <B> g \ </B> pressing on the arm. g '. A caliper g \ is mounted Pu at the bottom of the rod g1 \; its ends are pivoted on ears protruding from a collar g <B> <I> \ </I> </B> mounted freely on the motor shaft a.
Compression springs g "arranged at each side of the motor shaft n tend to move this collar gls away from the drum a. The groove g" of the collar g receives the forked end s. an angled lever si which is pivoted in consoles s "of the support p, the free end of this angled lever si being provided with a roller s'.
A bar t is arranged so as to slide in the support p and is connected to a rod or to. an actuating pedal, so that it can be moved back and forth by means of this rod or pedal. The rod t is provided with: an inclined plane t 'intended to engage with the roller s' of the bent lever s'. When the bar t is moved to the right of the drawing, the angled lever forces the collar g "to approach the drum m .. Thanks to this movement, the arm g8 is lifted and its movement is transmitted to the drum. 'axis g' which turns pushed by the connecting rod g 'and the lever g6.
In this way, the lever operating the bar t rotates the sleeve and closes or -opens the orifice g <B> '</B>.
The length of the incline t 'is such that by moving the bar t through its entire stroke, the sleeve g- is forced to rotate from the fully closed position to the. fully open position.
After having traversed the surface of the line t ', the roller engages: with a part t' flat, for a purpose described below.
The operation of the device is as follows: When the valve is completely or green, the pistons can move freely forward and backward; if a certain load is produced on the driven shaft f tending to prevent rotation, the motor pinion 1 drives the planetary wheels and, as there is no obstacle to the cage moving, said planetary wheels roll around the internal toothing of the drum e1.
But when the lever is in its normal position, the valve is completely closed (fig. 1) and it is impossible for the pistons to come and go; the cage and consequently the pinions then rotate as a whole. With the motor shaft: In this case, because the planetary wheels mesh with the drum ë, the entire device is blocked and gives a direct drive.
Between these two extreme cases, the cage will transmit key movements of variable value from the motor pinion to the drum e1 according to the opening of the valve, which. Of variable transmission speeds.
The cylindrical drum m. includes a braking mechanism: when the control bar is moved t: beyond the position corresponding to the complete opening of the. valve, a band brake u is forced to apply to the cylindrical drum m, which prevents the cage of the planetary wheels from rotating. The rotation of the motor pinion in one direction will then cause the drum e 'to rotate in the opposite direction and thus a reverse movement will be held. The band brake can be applied gradually, resulting in various speed ratios for the reverse transmission.
It is for this purpose that the, surface t, \ is provided on the. bar t. By moving the bar t beyond the fully open position of the valve, the roller s3 is forced to engage the surface t2, so that the orifices in it are kept or green.
The bar t extends, on the other hand, back beyond. e the cam surface t 'and is connected by a connecting rod v' to a rod <I> v </I> projecting from an axis v2 journalled in a bearing z '' carried by one of the bolts r.
The axis v2 is provided at its upper end with a cam v ', so that by turning the cam c # 4 acts on the free ends u' of the mzbmi which it thus applies to the brake. The cam v4 is however formed in such a way that it acts only when the roller s8 is in engagement with the surface E2.
If desired, a separate control lever can be provided for the reverse movement.
In addition, instead of actuating the pistons using a cam arranged on the motor shaft, they can be actuated by means of an eccentric or by means of a simple crank -disposed on it. ci, in which case the cylinders can be arranged at right angles to the axis of the motor and drive shafts.
The complete device is preferably enclosed in a sealed box, which is filled with oil, so that the gears constantly rotate in the oil and are suitably lubricated.
In the device shown, the fact -l'enclose the cylinders in a mid cylindrical drum prevents the rotating cylinders from beating the oil in the gearbox.
Any suitable fluid can be used for the control mechanism, for example, glycerin or oil has been found to give satisfactory results.
In another embodiment: the control valve can be provided in the connecting pipe n., In which case this valve can comprise two plates, sliding one on the other, said plates being each provided with 'a triangular opening. To actuate the lever actuating the valve, a plate is provided which is freely mounted on the motor shaft, the end of the lever being provided with: a roller bearing for making contact with the plate. Said plate can be operated by a forked lever which is controlled by a suitable joystick.
