Electrolytic capacitor Process for its manufacture. The invention relates to an electrolytic capacitor which is particularly suitable for cases where the alternating voltage is superimposed on a direct voltage. Erbe sits at least one electrode provided with an insulating membrane, which in a predominantly main thing is not water, but according to the invention, essentially consisting of an electrolyte consisting of an ionogen dissolved in an alcohol. The invention also relates to a method for producing such a Kon capacitor.
The invention emerged from the endeavor to create an electrolytic capacitor which has a high capacity per unit volume and low electrical leakage, which should keep the membrane on the electrode during periods of non-use so that it does not have any Reforming to the extent required by ordinary capacitors with aqueous solution; an electrolyte that neither evaporates nor creeps should be used.
The connection of the skin electrode with its carrier is expediently produced in such a way that chemical or electrochemical effects and electrical leakage are avoided.
The invention enables the construction of an effective unit of great A simplicity and correspondingly relatively low costs.
The term “ionogen” is intended to denote generally acids, bases, salts and - or other chemical compounds which form ions in certain solvents, so that the solution is an electrically conductive medium. According to this definition, an electrolyte is a solution of one or more ionogens in a solvent in which the ionogen or dini ionogens are more or less ionized.
The expression "essentially dry" or "essentially anhydrous" is intended to mean with regard to the electrolytes and solvents that they are completely or at least practically anhydrous, so that the electrolyte is essentially a solution of an ionogen in the solvent, in contrast to a solution of the ionogen in water with the addition of another solvent.
In the drawing, Ausführungsbei games of the subject invention are shown schematically.
Fig. 1 is a vertical section of a rectifier; Fig. 2 is a plan view of another imple mentation; FIG. 3 shows a vertical section according to 3-3 of FIG. 2, FIG. 4 shows a wag right section according to 4 to 4 of FIG. 3; FIG. 5 is an elevation of the skin electrode according to FIG. 1.
The housing 10 (Fig. 1) consists, for example, of drawn steel that is plated with cadmium on the outside against Ro most. It could of course also consist of other conductive material.
The housing 10 contains an electrolyte 11, which is expediently made by heating essentially dry, chemically pure glycerine (specific weight not below 1.252 at 20 ° C.) to about 80 and adding 3 1/2 percent by weight of sodium bicarbonate NaHCO3 stirs in. It usually takes about 20 minutes to completely dissolve, after which the glycerine is allowed to cool to room temperature. Different amounts of glycerin and sodium bicarbonate can of course be used; Other substances, acids, can also be used as ionogens. Bases or salts can be used instead of sodium bicarbonate.
The electrolyte can also be produced in a non-liquid form. For example, you can dissolve three parts by weight of gelatine in one part of glycerine on a steam bath and saturate the hot solution with sodium bicarbonate. Other ionogens can also be used for the non-liquid electrolyte form. With the addition of a few drops of formaldehyde, the jelly quickly hardens and becomes non-liquefiable when it is heated later.
The membrane electrode 13 is held in all of the wall of the housing by a lid 13 made of an insulating material, which is not absorbable and chemically inert and can for example consist of a phenol condensation product.
The membrane electrode consists of several stamped aluminum disks 14 of substantially conical shape BEZW. Be cherform (Fig. 1), the side surfaces of which taper upwards so that any air bubbles can escape. These aluminum disks are held in ab with washers 15. The disks are lined up on an aluminum rod 16 and are held in place by a disk 17 which is held on the rod by the head 18. The upper disc rests against a collar 19 of the rod.
A lower sleeve 22 of the cover 13 surrounds the upper part of the rod 16. In order to prevent chemical or electrolytic effects where the aluminum touches the cover below the surface of the electrolyte (for example at 20), a C, rimmed washer 21 is provided . This is extremely important for successful operation at high voltages. If the aluminum electrode comes into contact with a phenol condensate at 20, a chemical change appears to take place in it. div carbonizes its surface and makes it conductive, so that a leakage current occurs at 20.
This causes sparks. which further destroys the skin there and ultimately makes the capacitor unusable. Experience has shown that if not a disk made of mica, cellulose or other inert insulating material, separates the skin-covered surface from the phenolic condensate. the capacitors inevitably fail at this point when exposed to high voltages.
The importance of protruding the sleeve below the level of the electrolyte is well known, insofar as it prevents surface effects from the combined influence of the air, the sparking of the electrolyte and the electrolytic gases at this point.
The housing 10 has a Ringein drawing 24 at the top, so that a round seat 25 for the outwardly projecting annular flange 26 of the cover 13 is formed. The latter is centered by upstanding walls 27 and carries a sealing ring 28 over which the walls 27 are folded over at 29 in order to hold the parts firmly together and to cover the sealing ring. The wall 29 advantageously rests against the vertical wall 30 of the cover 13. The sealing ring 28 is preferably made of asbestos with about 10% rubber, or of another inert insulating material.
A layer of oil over the electrolyte could also be used as a sealant to prevent evaporation of the solvent and absorption of moisture.
At the top, the cover has several ribs 31, 31 'and annular grooves 32, 32' between them to make surface conduction more difficult and to prevent short-circuiting of the condensate due to the ## creeping # of the electrolyte over the top of the capacitor. Should liquid penetrate through the joints around the mica disk 21 or the ring 28, it would collect in the grooves 32, 32 'before it can crawl from the housing part 29 to the aluminum rod 16, so that electrical leakage is avoided.
The cover preferably has a small bore 33 under the ring 28 (Fig. 1), so that gases through the sealing ring dif fund or. to escape under and around him. This prevents the occurrence of excessive pressure in the cell and, at the same time, the evaporation of the solvent, the absorption of moisture and the outflow of electrolyte when the capacitor is reversed, at least practically speaking.
A power supply approach 34 with ge perforated horizontal part 35 is attached to the aluminum rod by Stau chen the latter (Fig. 1) to a holding head 36 and is preferably made of aluminum to prevent electrolytic action in any escape of electrolyte ver. Different metals would form a galvanic element and then cause corrosion. In order to facilitate the soldering of wires, a tin-plated brass thimble 37 is fastened in the hole 38 of the extension 34.
In the embodiment according to FIGS. 2 to 4, three smaller electrodes are inserted into a cell instead of the skin electrode 12 of FIG. They consist of twisted aluminum rods 16 'with a shoulder 19' and several spaced apart and a piece with the \ rod forming disks 14 '(Fig. 5). This electrode can be made very bil lig on a lathe or automatic screw cutting machine who the. The lid 13 'of this embodiment has three downwardly projecting cans 22', each of which surrounds an aluminum rod 16 'and is held at a distance therefrom by mica washer 21'. The assembly of the wall 29 'and extension 34' etc. corresponds to FIG. 1.
The skin electrode, which consists of the alternately stamped discs and spacers arranged on the rod according to FIG. 1 or the rotated aluminum body according to FIG. 5, is first cleaned with an alkali solution and then treated in an acidic solution. The electrodes are immersed in a five percent solution of sodium carbonate at about '70' C. The electrodes are moved back and forth in order to remove the air between the plates and allow the sodium carbonate solution to act well on all surfaces.
In a few seconds, all traces of grease are removed, and the surface of the aluminum has a slightly etched or matt appearance, with foaming gas development. The work is preferably done in iron vessels and requires 10 or 15 seconds. In practice, this cut can often be omitted, as the acid treatment is usually sufficient to remove all impurities and prepare the surface for effective skin formation.
The electrodes are then removed from the soda solution and rinsed in pure water.
The final cleaning solution is prepared by mixing, for example, one part of concentrated nitric acid with three parts of water. The rinsed plates are immersed in this cold solution for two or three hours. The main purpose of this is to remove metallic surface contaminants from the aluminum. The chemical effect is usually very low.
The electrodes are then rinsed thoroughly in pure water and then in distilled water as it is absolutely essential that all traces of acid are removed before further treatment. For this purpose, the remaining water is preferably blown out with compressed air. The plates should be silver gray in color at this stage of the procedure. Too long immersion creates an uneven appearance.
After the disk unit is cleaned, the cover 13 and the aluminum approach 34 are attached to the upper end of the rod 16 by upsetting the upper end of the latter on her, which ensures that contamination of the unit is excluded.
The next step is alternating current formation, in which the plates are completely submerged in a solution of 2% chemically pure sodium bicarbonate in distilled water. The concentration of this solution can vary depending on the formation voltage. The diluted solutions are used for higher voltages. All metals that are not aluminum must be kept away from the plates during formation, and particular care must be taken to keep the corrosion products of copper and brass away from the plates and the bath. The bath is preferably in a steel vessel, and the Plates are divided into two groups, each of which forms a pole of the AC power source. The electrolyte is about 3 mm above the top disc.
The alternating current supply is regulated in such a way that around 1/2 ampere is allocated to the large disk structure (around 38 disks with a diameter of 25.4 mm) and a corresponding current for electrodes of other sizes. The initial potential is about 50 volts and is increased to 290 volts over about. 5 minutes.
During this period the current falls to a substantially constant value. The progression of the formation can be regulated by resistance or reactance in series with the power source. Preferably, the 290 volts are reached in about 4 minutes and paused until the current is constant, which will typically take 1 or 2 minutes longer. The initial formation with alternating current is important because it forms a more robust membrane that is less prone to defects or weak points.
The groups of plates formed with alternating current then receive direct current formation. preferably using the steel container as the negative pole and all of the aluminum plates as the positive pole. This formation takes place without disturbing the plates in the same vessel by switching from alternating current to direct current. The direct current treatment takes 2 1, 2 to 3 hours in the two percent aqueous solution of sodium carbonate. The temperature should be kept below 40 ° C, otherwise streaking can easily occur on the plates.
Instead of ending the alternating current formation before the direct current formation begins, the two can be alternated by gradually increasing the voltage for alternating current and direct current during the treatment and keeping the current essentially constant until the voltage has reached a maximum value, whereupon the current is allowed to drop to a minimum value. This alternating treatment results in a very robust and resistant skin covering on the aluminum electrode.
The electrodes are then carefully removed from the formation tank and thoroughly dried using a jet of compressed air. Here and with all subsequent treatments, it is very important that the electrode assemblies are treated with as little mechanical friction as possible. A break in the membrane makes the condenser unusable or increases the time for the necessary final formation.
This takes place in a substantially dry solution of 31/2% sodium bicarbonate in glycerine. As a rule, it is necessary to warm up the glycerine a little in order to dissolve it. Usually a temperature of 80 ° C for about 20 minutes is necessary. Great care should be taken to keep the glycerine off the surface of the lid 13 as it is very difficult to remove and can short-circuit and spoil the capacitor. The dried electrodes are immersed in this glycerine sodium carbonate solution and left for several hours to allow the air to escape from the spaces between the plates. The DC voltage is then applied and the electrodes are exposed to 250 volts until the leakage reaches the desired minimum value.
The formed electrodes are then carefully lifted out of the bath without removing the electrolyte held by the discs, and are then inserted into the housing 10, which was previously filled with the same glycerine solution to such an extent that the electrolyte level finally extends about 3 mm the top plate of the unit. You must be particularly careful to prevent the electrode from touching the side of the housing or other object.
After inserting the disk units in the housing 10, the sealing ring 28 is inserted, and the housing is closed ver by folding the upper edge 29 over the sealing ring. The capacitors are then connected to 250 volts direct current and should show a leak of less than 1 milliampere per unit. The voltage of 250 volts is maintained until the current drops to less than 0.2 milliamperes. Defective capacitors can be identified by their high level of leakage. Capacitor plates that have been formed in aqueous solutions and then inserted into glycerine electrolytes can cause interference from stray currents.
Since the skin is formed in the glycerine solution, this difficulty is avoided. The thin layer of glycerine that adheres to the plate when it is removed from the forming glycerine also serves to ensure better contact with it. to ensure the electrolyte in the condensate cell, that is, there is then less tendency to form air sacs.
The capacitor produced in this way is about 50 mm high and -32 mm in diameter, has a capacity of 10 microfa.rad, a dielectricity of 0.2 milliamp # -re at 250 volts direct current, is substantially stable, which means that no reforming is required after a period of non-use, does not suffer from hearing impairment from age or use and is inexpensive to manufacture.
Although a capacitor with an aluminum electrode in an electrolyte of sodium bicarbolnate in glycerine has been described above, any other suitable hardness electrode such as tantalum or the like could also be used instead of aluminum. It is also possible to use other alcohols, especially other polyhydric alcohols, such as Ä.tliylene glycol and the like instead of glycerine. Any essentially dry ionogen, such as
B. essentially dry sulfuric acid can be used instead of sodium bicarbonate, and gelatin or other substances can be added to the electrolyte in the context of the invention.
A very important feature of the capacitor described is its current leakage at high voltages. As is well known, the leakage current in ordinary paper capacitors is directly proportional to the voltage applied, that is, the graphical representation is a straight line. In the present electrolytic capacitor, however, the pellicle allows a rapid increase in the leakage current when the applied voltage increases above a certain value, and the voltage across the capacitor is prevented from increasing well above the given value.
In other words, while a paper capacitor generally has the properties of pure capacitance to which a fixed high value resistance is shunted, the present capacitor generally has the properties of pure capacitance to which a resistor is shunted , which, after the applied voltage has risen above a certain point, rapidly decreases as the applied voltage grows. In order to need an analysis, the present condenser works very similar to a pressure safety valve.
Because of this characteristic, the present capacitor finds an important application in filter circuits for rectifiers.
Very often the voltage wave of the outgoing circuit of the rectifier is characterized by one or more sharp increases or. high narrow peaks in each half-period wave of the rectified voltage. These peaks are caused by the magnetic and electrical properties of the supply transformer and rectifier. With a filter circuit that only uses paper capacitors, these peaks or increases cause disturbances in the choke coils belonging to the filter and can cause unsatisfactory filtering, which means that there can be too much unrest in the outgoing current of the filter.
If, however, the present capacitor is used as the first element of the filter circuit, it effectively prevents a certain value from being transmitted to the following elements in the filter circuit that exceeds fluctuations in the rectifier output voltage. The result is a very evenly filtered flow of the filter.
The fluctuations in the rectifier output voltage are each of kur zer duration in comparison to the whole half-period wave respectively. the impulse of the voltage in the same direction. In graphic representation, they are sharp peaks that are quite high but relatively narrow, so that removing these peaks only makes a small sacrifice in terms of performance and generally a significant reduction in efficiency.
By choosing the metal for the membrane electrode, the ionogen used in the electrolyte and the ionogen concentration in the electrolyte, the present capacitor cell can be given the desired characteristics for critical voltage and leakage within certain limits in order to meet the requirement that the electrolyte dic # peaks are removed from the outgoing voltage wave of a certain rectifier.
