Method and furnace for calining coke. High-quality electrodes for electrical reduction processes, such as those used for example in aluminum production according to Hall ader Hercult, are usually made from coke. The coke used for this purpose usually still contains considerable amounts of residual volatiles that must be driven off before the coke is usable for electrode manufacture.
A variety of methods have already been proposed for this, but so far one has mostly only been able to achieve the goal by means of fuel-heated calcining furnaces, which have many disadvantages. One of the most suitable methods of calcining the raw coke, that is to say to drive off the volatile substances contained in it, is to heat the coke by using it as a resistor for a passing electric current.
It is important that the coke be calcined uniformly. Furnaces that are heated by fuel and that operate periodically are uneconomical because they consume a great deal of fuel, while furnaces that are continuously operated by fuel are expensive to build and maintain.
With electrical calibration it has always been shown that the current tries to follow narrow channels instead of flowing through the whole cross section of the coke. These narrow channels therefore become hotter and hotter as the resistance decreases, so that inadequate and uneven calcination of the coke results and the furnace lining is often damaged by local overheating.
According to an already proposed method, a cylindrical coke column is heated in a vertical shaft furnace by a stream passed along the column, and the gas is passed upwards through the furnace, so that cool gas entering only from the coke in the lower part of the Oven absorbs heat while cooling the coke and then preheats the cold raw coke in the upper part of the oven.
After long tests, it has been shown that evenly calcined coke can be produced in a furnace with a low output using this method, but not in a large furnace for a throughput of, for example, more than 315 kg coke per hour .
It has now been established that coke can be calcined on a large scale in an electric shaft furnace, in which the calcined coke is cooled and the incoming raw coke is preheated with the aid of a gas flow directed towards the lower coke in the furnace, if this is the case Subject of the present invention forming method uses which is characterized in that the calcination of the coke in an electric shaft furnace of elongated,
For example, a rectangular or elliptical horizontal cross-section is made, and that the heating current is passed through the furnace in the direction of the longer axis of at least one horizontal cross-section at right angles to the direction of migration of coke and gas.
Under these conditions, the current is distributed uniformly over the cross-section or cross-sections, and accordingly a satisfactory and uniform calcination is obtained. The invention also relates to an electric shaft furnace for carrying out the claimed method.
In the drawing, an Ausführungsbei is playing such an electric shaft furnace. shown schematically.
1 is a vertical center section, FIG. 2 is a true-to-scale section along line II-II in FIG. 1.
The furnace shaft 1 made of refractory material has two pairs of true-to-scale electrodes 2 and 2 '. As Fig. 2 shows, the wag right cross-section of the shaft furnace is Läng Lich, and the electrodes are at the ends of the longer axis. The electrodes 2 are connected by a conductor and who is fed by the transformer 3. Likewise, the electrodes 2 'are connected to each other and fed by the transformer 3' ge. The current flows accordingly through the coke column along a narrow path. The furnace has a device 4 for supplying the raw coke, a device 5 for the coke outlet and a device 8 for removing the coke in the lower part of the furnace.
The gas expelled from the coke is preferably used as the gas for passage through the furnace, but gas from other sources can also be used.
Cool gas enters the furnace through a pipe 7 and meets the hot, calcined coke, in order, since the coke outlet device 5 is closed, to flow upwards, absorbing heat from the coke as it sinks, so that it becomes hotter as it approaches the electrodes. When the gas flows through the coke above the upper electrode, it gives off some of its heat to the coke as it sinks and preheats it.
The gas leaves the furnace through the pipe 6 and flows to a device for removing tar and other impurities and for cooling or storing, whereupon it can be returned to the calcining furnace through the pipe 7.
Of the numerous possible changes, it should be mentioned that one or three pairs of electrodes can be used instead of two. Any type of electrical current, for example three phase current, can be used. In order to use numbers without any intention of limitation, it should be mentioned that a furnace with a smaller cross-sectional axis 533 mm long while the larger axis is 1473 mm long produced around 360 kg of excellent calcined coke every hour.
