Abstract

An axe and an axe head is described herein. The axe head comprises a haft-receiving portion having top and bottom sides; and a blade coupled to the haft-receiving portion having a cutting edge opposite the haft-receiving portion. The blade includes a four-surface blade. One of the two opposite sides having a first surface extending from the haft-receiving portion to the cutting edge and becoming narrower therebetween. A normal to the first surface varies from being parallel to the cutting edge at the top end of the cutting edge to being at an angle with the cutting edge at the haft-receiving portion. A second surface is positioned adjacent the first surface and extends from the cutting edge parallel therewith to the haft-receiving portion at the bottom side thereof so as to be positioned at an angle relative to the cutting edge. The second side has two similar surfaces which are so configured that the bottom half of the head is a mirror image of the upper half thereof with the exception that the bottom half of the blade is longer that the upper half, rendering the axe so-called bearded.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0005] The use of the word "a" or "an" when used in conjunction with the term "comprising" in the claims and/or the specification may mean "one", but it is also consistent with the meaning of "one or more", "at least one", and "one or more than one". Similarly, the word "another" may mean at least a second or more.

[00061 As used in this specification and claim(s), the words "comprising" (and any form of comprising, such as "comprise" and "comprises"), "having" (and any form of having, such as "have" and "has"), "including" (and any form of including, such as "include" and "includes") or "containing" (and any form of containing, such as "contain" and "contains"), are inclusive or open-ended and do not exclude additional, unrecited elements or process steps.

[0007] In the present specification in the appended claims, various terminology which is directional, geometrical and/or spatial in nature such as "longitudinal", "horizontal", "front", rear", "upwardly", "downwardly", etc.
is used. It is to be understood that such terminology is used for ease of description and in a relative sense only and is not to be taken in any way as a limitation upon the scope of the present disclosure.

[0008] Other objects, advantages and features of the present invention will become more apparent upon reading of the following non-restrictive description of embodiments thereof, given by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings.

[0009] An axe 10 according to a first embodiment is shown in Figure 1. The axe 10 comprises a head 12 and a haft 14.

[0010] The haft 14 includes a handle portion 15 having a knob 16 at its proximate end and a grip portion 18 adjacent thereof, and a mounting portion 20, at the distal end of the haft 14, having a rounded rectangular cross-section and defining a shoulder (not shown) with the handle portion 15.

[0011] The haft is not limited to the illustrated embodiment and can take any other form allowing to operatively swinging the axe head 12.

[0012] The haft can be made of wood such as without limitations hickory or ash, of a polymeric material or of a synthetic or composite material.

[0013] The axe head 12 will now be described with reference to Figures 2 to 4.

[0014] The axe head 12 is a one-piece steel body having a four-surface blade 22 extending from a generally rectangular cubic portion 24 integral thereof. The axe head 12 is bounded by a cutting edge 26 of the blade 22 at one of its longitudinal ends and by a poll 28, defined by a surface of the rectangular cubic portion 24 opposite the blade 22.

[0015] The rectangular cubic portion 24 includes a rounded rectangular hole 30, defining the eye of the head 12, for receiving the mounting portion 20 of the haft 14 in a snugly fitting manner. One of the two faces 32 of the portion 24 which is adjacent the poll 28 and parallel to the axis 34 of the eye 30 includes a small fastener-receiving hole 36, the purpose of which will be described hereibelow in more detail. The eye 30 extends from the top side 35 of the rectangular cubic portion 24 to the bottom side 37 thereof.

[0016] The four-surface blade 22 is integrally connected to the rectangular cubic portion 24 through a tapered bridge 38 which joined the relatively greater section of the proximate end 40 of the blade 22 to the relatively smaller section of the distal end 42 of the portion 24. In operation, the bridge 38 contributes i) to the splitting effect of the axe head 12, and ii) ease the withdrawal of the head after its penetration in a piece of wood.

[0017] The four-surface blade 24 will now be described in more detail.

[0018] Each opposite side of the blade 24 includes two surfaces.

[0019] On a first side, a first surface 42 is defined by a first edge 44 shared with the tapered bridge 38 and therefore parallel therewith, a second edge 46 extending generally perpendicular from the first edge 44, at the level of the top side 35, to the cutting edge 26 and further defining the top edge of the blade 24, and a third edge 48 joining the first edge 44, at the level of the bottom side 37, and the second edge 46 at the cutting edge 26. The normal to the surface 42 varies gradually from perpendicular to the cutting edge 26 at the first edge 44 to parallel thereto at the intersection of the second and third edges and 48 (and of the cutting edge 26).

[0020] In other words, the first surface 42 is so shaped that it extends from along the tapered bridge 38 to the cutting edge 26 and within these limits it becomes gradually narrower from the length of the bridge 38 to the thickness of the cutting edge 26. Within the same limits, the orientation of the normal of the surface 42 also gradually varies from perpendicular to the cutting edge 36 to parallel thereto.

[0021] The second surface 50 is adjacent the first surface 42 and shares the edge 48 therewith. The surface 50 extends between the cutting edge 26 so as to be parallel therewith and the bridge 38 at the level of the bottom side 37 so as to be parallel therewith. The normal to the surface 50 varies gradually between these two perpendicular orientations.

[0022] The second side has two similar surfaces 52 and 54 (see on Figure 3) which are so configured that the bottom half of the head 12 is a mirror image of the upper half thereof with the exception that the bottom half of the blade 22 is longer that the upper half, rendering the axe so-called bearded.
[0023] The above-described configuration of the blade 22 results in a double action thereof during operation: while the cutting edge 26 and distal portion of the blade 22 causes the wood to slit under the impact of the axe head 12, the further gradual change of orientation of the surface 44, 50, 52 and 54 causes the slitting to accentuate and the splitting to be more rapid and effective.

[0024] In addition, the edges 48 and more generally the configuration of the axe head 12 contribute to minimizing the axe getting stuck in a piece of wood during the use of the axe 10.

[0025] Returning briefly to Figure 1, a method for securing the axe head 12 to the haft 14 will now be described.

[0026] The mounting portion 20 of the haft 14 is secured in the eye 30 using epoxy glue or any other liquid fastener. The head 12 is further secured to the haft 14 using a fastener (not shown) inserted in the hole 36.
[0027] It is to be noted that many modifications could be made to the axe 10 described hereinabove and illustrated in the appended drawings. For example:

[0028] - while the surface 44, 50, 52 and 54 of the blade have been described as having orientation variation of 90 degrees, a head according to a further embodiment (not shown) has surfaces having orientation variation less than 90 degrees from the base of the blade to the cutting edge thereof;

[0029] - the head can have a blade having dissimilar sides, such as a first side having a conventional surface and a second side having a side similar to the ones described hereinabove;
[0030] - the surfaces 44 and 52 in the blade 22 are not gradually becoming narrower from the base of the blade 22 to the cutting edge 26 thereof and the variation is exponential or else;

[0031] - an axe according to embodiments of the present invention is not limited to having the haft illustrated in Figure 1. A haft having any configuration can be provided;

[0032] - other methods of securing the head to the haft than the method described herein can be used. For example, only one of the fastener or epoxy can be used;

[0033] - the eye is not limited to a rounded rectangular section and can have other configuration so as to accommodate a haft having a different configuration than the one illustrated;

[0034] - the portion of the head including the eye can be different than a rectangular cube;

[0035] - the tapered bridge can be omitted;

[0036] - the portion between including the eye is not limited to the rectangular cubic shape and a haft-receiving portion of another shape can be provided;

[0037] - the head is not limited to a one-piece body and can be assembled from two or more parts. The parts can be assembled by welding or using fasteners;
[0038] - an axe head according to a further embodiment does not include a beard; and [0039] - the head can be made of any hard metal or composite material.

[0040] While several embodiments have been described herein, it will be understood that further modifications are possible, and this application is intended to cover any variations, uses, or adaptations of the invention, following in general the principles of the invention and including such departures from the present disclosure as to come within knowledge or customary practice in the art to which the invention pertains, and as may be applied to the essential features hereinbefore set forth and falling within the scope of the invention.
