Abstract

The "Subway Barrier Wall with Enhanced Passenger Flow" is different from that of traditional platform screen doors or platform edge doors in that passenger flow technology is built into this product due to the fact that the location is specifically designed to be well set back from the train pit in order to allow passenger flow between the subway train and the subway barrier only when the train is in the station.
This wall is comprised of several smaller openings and several larger openings, using automated glass door openings to which the openings no longer need to line up with existed subway train door openings as did previous platform doors had to.

The different size door openings also represent the necessary peak flow passenger flow needs. For example smaller door openings are for lower volume passenger flow needs, and larger door openings are for higher volume passenger flow needs.
Furthermore, the "subway barrier wall with enhanced passenger flow" is also ideally intended to include directional passenger flow signage and or a traffic light system located attached and or above each of the automated door openings. Directional traffic flow signage would also be indicated on the interior subway car doors.

The larger door openings are intended for singular passenger flow in the direction of the larger volume needs. The direction of the passenger flow within the larger door openings would "change direction" from a morning rush hour commuter traffic to an evening rush hour commuter traffic. For example, in the morning the larger door openings would be a singular passenger "outward flow" at the centre of the business hub of a city (often the highest volume station), and than in the evening, the "going home" commute would change to a singular "inward flow" direction on the larger door openings.

Several passenger flow plans are made possible using the "subway barrier wall with enhanced passenger flow" due to the fact of its' capability to not only separate subway passenger flow, also provide singular passenger flow in and off of subway trains, but also it essentially removes the traditional "wall of people" problem that is experienced worldwide in subway transportation.

The theory is that a subway system can only be as efficient as its' highest volume station.
In increasing the efficiency of passenger flow during rush hour commutes and significantly reducing dwell times, more trains can travel to metropolitan cities during peak flow periods thereby taking thousands, more likely millions of annual automobile commute trips off our also gridlocked highways.

Description

SubwayBarrrer YYall with Enhanced PnssetiPer Flow - Descrlution. t' 1. The general character of the class of article or the kind of process to which the invention "subway barrier wall with enhanced passenger flow" relates.

The "subway barrier wall with enhanced passenger flow" may be made of any number of materials. It could even be comprised of high volume garage doors such as used in car washes with sensors to cause them to open and close when the subway train arrives. It could be comprised of a sliding gate system. It could be comprised of a retractable safety barrier. It could be comprised a fixed railings. It could be comprised of automated glass doors, metal doors, wooden doors, or doors made with any combination of materials. In all barrier case scenarios, each of these barrier wall methods would have various passenger flow openings that can vary in size or be all the same size passage way opening. The barrier wall can be floor to ceiling or can be made up of any height. The barrier wall can be placed any distance back from the subway train pit with the intention of creating passenger flow between the subway trai.tt and the subway barrier way.

Subway Barrier Wall with Enhance I'assenM Flow-Desgrintion - Pa~e2 In all cases, the subway barrier wall is intended to uaclude a passenger flow enhancement component. However, may it be noted that even without the added passenger flow enhancement, the subway barrier wall also solves the subway operator unresolved need of being unable to align (platform screen doors or platform edge doors) that are placed on the platfozxn edge or very near to the platforna edge. This is due to the fact that subway trains purchased from several different companies and or having several different designs are unable to align with the present use of the traditional platform edge doors and therefore subway operator are left with the problem of not being able to offer subway platform train pit safety due to the fact that they cannot use the traditionally presently offered "platform edge doors".

The "subway wall barrier with passenger flow enhancement" invention even if you provide the new innovative solution of having such a "subway barrier wall" positioned back from the subway train pit as it is designed for, and that it is installed or used without the "passenger flow enhancement" added Subway Barrier Wall witit Enhanced Passewer Flow - Descrintion-Page3 feature or benefit, the subway barrier wall in and of itself is innovative, useful and new without the added passenger flow enhancement. It all depends on how a subway operator chooses to incorporate this invention to meet their specific need they choose to resolve.

The "subway wall barrier with passenger flow enhancement" uniquely provides a new and innovative solution of enhancing passenger flow at the subway platform level. The "subway wall barrier with passenger flow enhancement" provides a new and useful solution to allow subway train operators to install a subway wall barrier when they otherwise were not able to because of the variety of subway train door openings.
2. The inventive idea which the new article of process embodies, and the way in which resort to it overcomes the difficulties and inconveniences of previous practices or proposals.

Present Technologies:

Yellow Line Method: The yellow line has been in operation since the early 1900's and yet, human nature has caused this method to not work. Due to the Subway Barrier Wall with Enhanced Passenger Flow- Description- Paze4 high volumes of passengers, a wall of persons continue to aggressively approach to incoming train, quickly align themselves fully in front of subway door opening and create an barrier wall preventing the disembarking of passengers from flowing efficiently. This significantly lengthens train dwell times within the station.

'White Glove Metlaod: The white glove method used in Tokyo is a method that has to do with pushing more passengers in a train. This actually potentially delays the closing of subway train doors, due to attempting to over stuff passengers into train cars. This method has nothing to do with enhancing passenger flow and also actually reducing train dwell times within the station.

Step Aside ellethod. The step aside method is used in New York City and is a mere attempt to prevent the "wall of people" effect as passengers aggressively step in front of the subway doors blocking the exiting passengers and simply asking the boarding passengers to step aside have difficulty doing so due to the crowds of persons during rush hour peak periods.

Subway a S a r r i e r Wall w i t l t Enlaanced P a s s e n g e r ,F'low-Descrintion-Pa e5 Platfor=m Ed~e doors or also called Platform screen doors: This method has no passenger flow component or enhancement. This method does not solve the issue of lining up platform edge doors with subway train doors when subway systems generally have more than one type of train style within their rolling stock.

Passen&er Waitft area: In Toronto, Canada back in the 1960's they designed a special passenger waiting area section that was never enforced.
There were no special devices other than perhaps an overhead sign showing its' location, but at no time was it a success. The "wall of people" problem still exists.
3. A full description of the best way of using or putting into operation the inventive idea.

One of the benefits for this invention is how passenger flow enhancement is created by means having a subway barrier wall specifically designed such that it is located back from the subway train pit, such that passenger flow can be created between that space. This space distance would be determined based Subway Barrier Wall witk E'nl:anceaCPassen~er F'l'ow-,Vescrint.ionPazed on the needs of the subway operator and based on their present platform dimentions. The concept of separating inflow from outflow of passengers also create passenger flow enhancement. The concept a having the ability to allow singular inflow for one train car door per train car because of the quick, non impeded passenger flow of the other train car door on. the same train car allows for efficient passenger flow. One can even create a common phrase for passenger flow throughout their subway system such as "exit left", "enter right" that become uniform throughout their system. Or they might adopt a phrase "enter left ', "exit right" that becomes uniform across their subway system. In such a circuinstance, no directional passenger traffic lighting is necessary and or directional signage is necessary to help segregate passenger flow.

But one thing is true, without the subway barrier wall in place well back from the train pit (as decided by the subway operator according to their platform specifications), allowing enough room for passenger flow between the train itself and the subway barrier way, that passenger flow enhancement would not S'ubway J3arrier Wall with Enhanced Passenger Flow-Descripiion Pa~e7 be possible unless say perhaps you had several police officers or train conductors almost physically holding the "wall of people" back from aggressively approaching the oncoming train.

The subway barrier wall with enhanced passenger flow works best with the "subway passenger door traffic light" invention which allows for simple, easy to follow directional traffic lighting system that instruct passengers which way to go. Quite simply a Red Traffic Light means do not exit or do no enter. A
Green Traffic Light means enter here or exit here. A yellow light means that you may "exit or enter", however be aware of opposing traffic, and generally keep with the worldwide rule that the exiting of passengers take place first.
Drawing #1 provides a good example as to how a subway operator may choose to set up their passenger flow method within their platform system.
This invention is intended to set out the design to allow subway operators to select their own passenger traffic flow method that best fits the needs within their own passenger flow needs. Any passenger flow design can be Subway Barrier Wall witli enhanced ptEssenger flow --bescrintion-.Pag,.e 8 incorporated using directional signage ("do not enter") or ("enter here") or "exit only" or "enter only" or "enter" or "exit" or whatever wording used to separate passenger flow. Alternatively, the "subway passenger door traffic light" invention system can be used to separate and or the direct passenger traffic flow. Also any number of openings, any height of openings, any size of opening, and any style of openings can be chosen to create the subway barrier wall. These decisions would be made at the discretion of the subway operator themselves. Furthermore, this technology can be used within any other mass passenger flow or people flow situation or application to help create efficient people flow where needed. An exanlple migllt be for the Olympics, big exhibitions, fairs, sports events, concerts to help create efficient people flow.
The name "subway" within the invention name does not limit the ability for the "barrier wall" to be only used in subway situations, and as described, Subway Barrier Wall with Enhancerl.Fassenzer Flow-Descrip~ion -!Pa e9 using designated door openings witlVor without different door sizes, or different material used alongside with directional people flow sigixage using lights and/or signs used, with the intention of increasing people flow. The invention of the "subway barrier wall with passenger flow enhancement" is not limited to the subway platform application, but may also be used in any other application where person flow enhancement is necessary. The term "subway" has been used in the invention's name or title due to the fact that the highest atid best use is in the applicatioi} of the subway passenger flow transfer.

In fact, the "subway barrier wall with enhanced passenger flow" is actually a device that creates enhanced people flow wherever there is any application that would involve high volumes of persons where there is a need for creating person flow in two directions no matter how small or great either of the people flow is. Informing the people flow that some exits are meant for dual person flow actually encourages less people as they are being met with apposing people flow, thereby acts as a fire code safety if the majority people flow Subway Barrier Wall witli Enhanced Passenger Flow-Description -pnoeX (1 needs to quickly unexpectedly change direction.

The purpose of the "subway barrier wali with enhance passenger flow" is to enhance the lower the dwell times (how long the subway train needs to be at the station). The purpose is to expedite the length of time it takes for the unloading and the loading of passengers on the train so that the time is less than without the subway barrier wall.

The suggested method for comprising this subway barrier wall would be made of a series traditional automated glass doors from wall to wall across the entire subway platform. The suggested distance from the train pit to the barrier wall would be between 3 to 8 feet. It is also suggested that the door opening be altered from smaller opening, to larger opening, to smaller opening, to larger opening etc. A motion sensor would be located on the barrier wall side closest to the train allowing all barrier doors to open when train arrives.
The larger opening would be intended to be used for the higher volume directional passenger flow needs. Due to the fact that higher volume directional passenger flow needs change generally twice a day for the average Suhwav Barrier Wall with Enhanced Passenzer Flow- Descrrption pazel r work commuter needs, than the larger door opening flow needs would change direction twice a day. Directional traffic lighting and or directional signage would direct passenger flow. Directional traffic lighting and or directional signage would also be located above every interior subway car door.

Directional traffic lighting and or directional signage would be attached to the subway barrier wall above each door opening and or would be suspended from the subway ceiling. The suggested method would be that the passenger traffic light or passenger traffic signage be attached and or directly above eacli subway barrier wall opening and as low as possible for the easiest visual aid to passengers seeking where to exit or where to enter the subway train.

Subway Barrier Wall witit Enhanced Passenzer Flow-Descriptivn pageX2 The specification choices and lighting choices, and the materials choices used by the subway operator do not act as an improvement to this invention due to the fact that within the "subway barrier wall with enhanced passenger flow" invention, it has allowed for the ability to not only vary its' application for different people flow needs, but also has allowed to vary its' application.
based on the unique needs within each subway system as they do not all have the sa;ne in passenger flow needs, platform specifications and subway rolling stock inventory.
