WO ~l/58825 CA 02398572 2002-07-26 pCT/FROl/00297 VOILE DE VERRE ET SON UTILISATION POUR
The Manufacturing Technology of Continuons Glass Fibres, K. L. LOEWENSTEIN, Ed.
Les voiles de verre présentent toutefois l'inconvénient d'une WO X1/58825 CA 02398572 2002-07-26 pCT~R01/00297 WO ~ l / 58825 CA 02398572 2002-07-26 pCT / FROl / 00297 GLASS SAIL AND ITS USE FOR
WATERPROOFING COATINGS
The present invention relates to the field of sheet materials based on fibers and relates more particularly to a glass veil usable as a substrate for the production of coated, coated or impregnated with bitumen, in particular for roofing applications and / or sealing.
In the field of roofing or waterproofing, it is known use bituminous membranes that are applied to the surface to cover or seal. These membranes generally consist of a sheet substrate coated or impregnated with a bituminous matrix.
The sheet materials can be of various kinds and are usually obtained from organic or mineral fibers, preferably in the form of nonwovens.
Among the usable materials, the glass veils have a large interest because they guarantee dimensional stability over time of the bituminous membrane.
Glass veils can be obtained by any technique known in itself, in particular the so-called wet technique, described in particular in The Manufacturing Technology of Continuons Glass Fibers, KL LOEWENSTEIN, Ed. ELSEVIER, 2nd edition, 1983, pp 315-317.
This technique, which is similar to paper techniques, consists of prepare an aqueous suspension of cut glass fibers, deposit this suspension in a film on a filter mat subjected to suction for remove some of the water from the deposited film, apply a composition of binder on the wet film, dry the web and crosslink the binder in a oven, then condition the veil as desired. The final product present in the form of a fairly thin sheet (thickness of the order of 0.2 to 0.8 mm) generally packaged in rolls.
The binder is often an aqueous composition based on urea resin.

Cette VVE ~1/SÖÖ25 CA 02398572 2002-07-26 pCT~R01/00297 2 relatively low tear resistance, which affects comfort of use and in particular compels the user to take precautions when handling to constitute the membrane or place it on the roof.
To overcome this drawback, there are complex substrates which combine a veil based on organic fibers with good tear resistance and a glass grid providing stability dimensional to the whole. These complexes which combine two products intermediaries are however complicated to manufacture.
The invention aims to provide a glass-based material whose tear resistance is improved, without its manufacturing being more complicated than that of a traditional veil.
EP-A-0 763 505 describes a glass fiber mat for the manufacture of bituminous roofing shingles, whose resistance is improved thanks to a urea-formaldehyde binder modified with a self-crosslinking vinyl additive. In this mast, a minor proportion of fibers may not consist of glass, and be especially chosen from organic fibers such as Nylon ~, polyester, polyethylene, polypropylene. This document does not give of precise indication on these organic fibers, and does not contain any example particular illustrating this possibility.
The present invention is based on the discovery that many organic fibers are not suitable for making a veil and even have a very negative effect on the properties of the veil in the application bituminous roofing, but only a very precise selection of materials synthetics overcomes this drawback.
In this regard, the subject of the invention is a veil based on fibers which can be used for the constitution of bituminous membranes, comprising fibers of glass and organic fibers linked by a binder, characterized in that the fibers have a shrinkage rate at 130 ° C less than or equal to 5%.
It is specified that the term "glass veil" includes according to the invention materials well known to those skilled in the art of fiber-based products glass. These are thin sheet materials, essentially of structure isotropic, i.e. there is no preferential orientation of fibers.
In practice, we can qualify a veil by means of the "isotropy ratio", tensile strength of the veil in the machine direction ~ which is generally of the order tensile strength of the web in the cross direction from 1, in particular of the order of 1 to 1.5, sometimes going up to 2. This VVE ~ 1 / SÖÖ25 CA 02398572 2002-07-26 pCT ~ R01 / 00297
Les fibres répondant aux exigences de l'invention peuvent être trouvées WO 01/58825 CA 02398572 2002-07-26 pCT~R01/00297 3 essentially random orientation of the fibers is generally obtained at from the presentation of glass fibers in chopped strands for the manufacturing veil, for example using the wet technique mentioned more high.
The choice of organic fibers according to the above criterion gives the veil good quality, and in particular mechanical and thermal resistance compatible with the subsequent use of bitumen impregnation, then than the other fibers give the web thermal and / or mechanical resistance insufficient.
First, the organic fibers used in the manufacture of veil have a high melting point to avoid degradation in all the thermal steps in the manufacture of the veil, in particular drying and crosslinking in an oven, and implementation of the veil, in particular contact bituminous binder. Generally speaking, synthetic organic matter is chosen to have a melting point above about 220 ° C.
According to the invention the fibers are selected according to their rate thermal shrinkage: this quantity corresponds to the variation dimensional, in this case a shortening of the fiber after it has been exposed to a temperature given for a defined time. For this, we measure the initial length Li of the fiber before heating, then the final length Lf, the withdrawal rate r being equal to r = (Li - Lf) / Li. (percentage) The decisive withdrawal rates according to the invention are expressed for a temperature of 130 ° C produced in a vapor atmosphere while a duration of 30 min.
According to the invention, the shrinkage is chosen to be less than or equal to 5%, of preferably 4%, in particular 3%, for example of the order of 2 to 3%.
Advantageously, this quality of fiber can be obtained from semi-crystalline polymer materials, in particular the spinning process allows a stretching which increases the crystallinity rate. Others manufacturing conditions such as the presence of nucleating agents or the temperature factor can also lead to the organization of basic macromolecules so that the polymer of initial amorphous structure begins to take on a crystal structure and become semi-crystalline.
Fibers meeting the requirements of the invention can be found WO 01/58825 CA 02398572 2002-07-26 pCT ~ R01 / 00297
Le voile selon l'invention étant particulièrement adapté aux applications WO 01/58824 among the polyEater fibers, in particular polyalkylene terephthalate, in especially polyethylene terephthalate.
Fiber is preferred; organic adapted to the manufacturing process of wet nonwovens, which contain a size allowing the dispersion in water of the individual filaments.
Organic fibers can have variable dimensions, with a average diameter of the order of 7 to 25 Nm, for a titre of the order of 0.5 to 2 dtex. The fibers are advantageously cut to a length of the order one or a few tens of millimeters, in particular from 6 to 30 mm.
The effect of organic fibers is clearly noticeable from 5% by weight per relative to the total weight of fibers. The proportion of organic fibers is advantageously of the order of 5 to 30%, in particular from 20 to 30%, in particular about 25% by weight relative to the total weight of fibers.
The glass fibers used according to the invention are of a type conventional for making a veil, preferably in the form of threads cut, to a length of the order of ten millimeters, in particular of 6 to 30 mm, preferably about 10 to 20 mm, for example 12 to 18 mm. II
it is understood that a certain proportion of yarns (for example 5 to 10%) can be cut to a length of up to 100 mm. In addition, we can introduce in the veil of continuous yarn, in particular glass yarn, as reinforcement in the longitudinal direction.
The binder used to constitute the veil is advantageously based on urea-formaldehyde resin, preferably modified with vinyl additives and / or acrylic, in the manner known in particular from US-4,681,802, EP-A-0 763 505.
The level of binder is generally 15 to 30% by weight of dry matter per compared to the veil.
The veil is manufactured with a usual grammage for the sails of glass, of the order of 30 to 150 g / m2, in particular 50 to 120 g / m2.
Given the difference in density between glass and fibers organic, the amount of material in the veil according to the invention for a given grammage is a little higher than that contained in a veil of glass, which results in a relatively higher thickness and / or lower porosity. The porosity is for example of the order of 1500 to 1900 I / m2s for a veil of 50 g / m2.
The veil according to the invention being particularly suitable for applications WO 01/5882

5 The bituminous matrix can be chosen from the matrices known in itself: natural bitumen, modified or not, or synthetic binder, such as "binder clear ”allowing in particular to give the membrane a color decorative.
The following examples, given without limitation, illustrate the invention.
Example 1 An aqueous fiber suspension is prepared in which the fibers understand - 75% by weight of cut glass wire E, having a filament diameter of 10 µm and a linear mass of 360 tex, the cutting length being 12 mm, - 25% by weight of cut polyester yarn available from the company KURARAY under the reference EP 133 adapted to the paper processes, dispersible in water. This wire is characterized by a filament diameter of 12 Nm and a linear density of 1.4 dtex, the cutting length being 15 mm. It is a polyethylene terephthalate wire drawn for increase its crystallinity, which has a shrinkage rate of around 2%
at 130 ° C in a humid environment for 30 minutes of exposure, and a rate of shrinkage of 3% at 170 ° C in a dry atmosphere for 15 minutes of exposure.
The fiber suspension which also contains the usual additives, knowledge anti-foam, dispersant, viscosity agent, is implemented in standard conditions on a sail making machine including (i) a hydroformer on which a partially wet film is formed drained, (ii) a binder application station by spraying, coating [waterfall device 'or' curtain coater '] or passage in a bath aqueous composition based on acetate-urea-formaldehyde resin and acrylic, which deposits on the veil a quantity of binder of 19% by weight of dry matter relative to the weight of the veil, (iii) a drying oven and crosslinking at several temperature zones from 135 to 215 ° C where the sail circulates with an average residence time of around 30 seconds, preferably slightly less than 30 seconds.

W~ ~1/S8ô2$ CA 02398572 2002-07-26 pCT/FROl/00297 6 The veil poses no manufacturing problem, and is obtained with a grammage of 50 g / m2, a thickness of 0.3 mm and a porosity of 1580 I / m2.s.
This veil is subjected to mechanical resistance tests at temperature ambient and high temperature whose results are shown in Table 1 ci below.
Tensile strength From the veil sample, 10 test pieces are cut from the longitudinal direction and 10 test pieces in the transverse direction, 50 mm wide and 250 mm long. The specimen is fixed between the jaws of a traction, and the mobile gripper drive system is actuated until the rupture of the sample: the values of the force of breaking (in Newton) and elongation at break (as a percentage of the length nominal).
We also measure the tensile strength at 250 ° C
under fixed load equal to 10% of the measured breaking value previously, and we measure the time it takes to break of the test tube.
Tear resistance From the veil sample, 10 test pieces are cut from the longitudinal direction and 10 test pieces in the transverse direction, 50 mm wide and 100 mm long. On each test piece, practice from the edge on a small side a clear cut parallel to the long sides at mid-distance from the long sides and 50 mm long. On a traction machine, we adjust the distance between the jaws so that it is equal to 50 mm, we block the test tube in the jaws and the dynamometer is actuated by adjusting the climb speed at 100 mm / min. We note the maximum load (in N) when the test piece is completely dissociated into two parts. Resistance tear is expressed as the average of the ten measurements.
The veil of Example 1 has mechanical and very satisfactory dimensional stability. II was implemented on a line continuous production of bituminous membrane by impregnation with hot bitumen at around 200 ° C, with good ability to impregnation, even giving the membrane a very aesthetic appearance satisfactory.

The veil has a grammage of 50 g / m 2, a binder content 24% by weight of dry matter relative to the weight of the veil, a thickness of 0.3 mm and a porosity of 2000 I / m2.s. We submit it to same mechanical tests as the veil of example 1.
Comparative example 2 Example 1 is reproduced with an organic fiber which does not satisfy the criteria of the invention. It is polyester fiber sold by TERGAL FIBERS under the reference l, 6dtex T110 semi-matt cut, also dispersible in water, characterized by a titre of 1.6 dtex, a length of 12 mm cut, shrinkage rate at 130 ° C in a vapor atmosphere of 7%.
A veil of 50 g / m 2 is produced, with a binder rate of 24% in weight, a thickness of 0.3 to 0.4 mm and a porosity of 1700 I / m2.s.
Manufacturing poses problems in the end, because we observe the formation of folds at the outlet of the oven, which can be attributed to a phenomenon thermal removal of organic fiber.
As the mechanical tests show, the veil has a low mechanical resistance, deteriorated compared to the classic glass veil. We notes in particular that the anisotropy of the veil is greatly increased. In furthermore, the mechanical resistance at 250 ° C. is nonexistent.
This veil is not suitable for the production of membranes bituminous.
