Description

926~
.. ~
This inven-tion rela-tes to a 8eed-drilling machine.
`. It more particularly relates to seed-drilling machines having a storage tank and a me-tering device consisting of a plurality of metering uni-ts and containing Sowing wheels, adapted to be ~ driven at different speeds, and wherein the sowing wheels are ; each located between two vertical walls and equipped with pro-., jections, flaps, which are adapted to pivot and to be locked in place, being arranged below said sowing wheels, the free `~ ends of said flaps approaching closely thereto in their operative positions, and the width of the said sowing wheels, and said ~; flaps, being only slightly less than the distance between the , .
~ respective vertical walls between which they are located.

,~ A seed-drilling machine of this type is disclosed in ;~ German OS 24 59 470, but the main disadvantage of this device ; is that small seeds, especially ones having bristles or whiskers , .
become lodged in the small gaps between the sowing wheels and ~ the vertical walls and between the flaps and the vertical walls.

- ~ As a result the seeds are damaged or completely destroyed, or :,.,................................................................... :
the passages between the sowing wheels and the flaps are re-; 20 stricted, if not completely blocked. Accordingly, the device :., - ceases tp function properly.
For the purpose of preventing seeds from lodging between the sowing wheels and the vertical walls, it is also :..,~
: known from German Patent 19 06 077 that the outer surfaces o~
-the projections, adjacent the vertical walls, form an angle opening towards the circumference of the projections, but this overcomes only a part of the disadvantage mentioned above. There ",,1! still remains the danger of seeds becoming jammed between the vertical walls and the flaps and this may have the detrimental consequences mentioned above.
It is therefore a prime object of the present invention ~` to improve the known seed-drilling machine in such a manner as ,;.
.

.~ .

,;;, . . . .

~ .

; to ensure that the see~ flows satisfactorily from the metering device and is not damaged.
According to the in~ention, thiS purpose is achieved in that the outer surfaces of the projections adjacent the ' vertical walls form therewith, in a manner known per se, an ~ angle open towards the circumference of the said projections, '` and in that the flaps are equipped on each side with extensions ~,~
pointing in -the direc-tion of the sowing wheels, the internal lateral surfaces of the said extensions being at least approxi-mately at the same angle to the vertical walls as the outer -surfaces of the sai.d projections, As a result of -this arrangement, and of the cooperation between the rotary motion of the projections and the vertical . walls, the seeds picked up by the projections on the sowing -wheels, and initially pushed along the vertical walls, are , . . ~
. impelled in a direction at an angle to the circumference and ..
~ toward the central area of the sowing wheels. They are thus , : ~
always being moved away from the gap between the outer faces `~ of the sowing wheels and the vertical walls. This movement of ~. 20 the seeds at an angle toward the central area of the sowing `.' wheels is reinforced by the slope of the internal lateral sur-faces of the flaps, so that the seeds are, at the same time, also moved away from the gaps on each side of the flaps between -. ~, . .
: them and the vertical walls.

`~ Provision is also made, according to the invention,,: .
~ for the flap extensions towards -the sowing wheels and their . ., ~ .
~ projec-tions to be at least approximately of the same height.

.~ This reinforces to an optimal degree the impetus imparted to `.~ the seeds by the sloping outer faces of the projections and `. 30 the sloping internal lateral surfaces of the flaps.

~; In one embodiment of the invention as disclosed and~;;
~``-` which is preferred on the grounds of light weight and low cost, ~ .. . ..
; - 2 -. ~

~0~7~26 ;~ the flap ~xtensions run from the free ends of -the flaps over ; only a part thereof. Thus, if the upper outer edges of the said extensions, at their maximal height, enclose, with the `. surfaces of the flaps, in the direction of rotation of the . sowing wheels, an acute angle, then the impetus urging the seeds towards the central area of the sowing wheels will be continuously reinforced as the seeds slide around said . extensions. Finally, and according to the invention, the upper outer edges of the extensions merge in an arc into the surfaces .. , 10 of the flaps. This arrangement affords particular protection ....
to the seeds.
In one aspect of the invention there is provided a seed-drilling machine having a storage tank and a metering device comprising of a plurality of metering llnits and con-taining sowing wheels equipped with projections and adapted to be driven at different speeds, each of said wheels located between two vertical walls and flaps, adapted to pivot and be locked, being arranged below the said sowing wheels, the free ends of the said flaps approaching closely thereto when in
2~ their operative positions, and the width of the said sowing . wheels, and of the said flaps, being only slightly less than the . distance between the respective vertical walls between which . they are located, characterized in that the outer faces of the ~;~ projections adjacent the vertical walls form therewith, in a manner known per se, and include an angle (~ ) open towards the ` circumference of the said projections, and in that flaps are ` equipped on each side with extensions extending towards the . sowing wheels, the internal lateral surfaces of the said ex-, tensions forming, at least approximately, the same angle (~ ) 30 with the vertical walls as said outer faces of the projections.

The invention is illustrated by way of example in the following drawings wherein:-

79;~6 ~, ., i;~ FIGURE 1 is a longi-tudinal cross-Sec-tion -through '` the me-tering unit in accordance with the . .
~;, present invention; and :, .
FIGURE 2 is a section through the same metering -unit along line A-B in Figure 1, ;jf~i The metering unit 1 comprises a seed housing 2 ?
.` detachably secured to outlet 4 of a storage tank 3, (shown in part only). Arranged between vertical walls ~ of housing 2 is s a sowing wheel 7 secured to a shaft 6, width b of sowing wheel . 10 7 being only slightly less than distance a between vertical walls 5. In a manner known per se, but not shown, shaft 6 is driven by a variable speed transmission, so that the seed in !' storage tank 3 may be discharged in the amount desired.
Sowing wheel 7 has two rows of projections 8, which ; include outer faces 9 and which terminate adjacent walls 5, , . ~ .
and which are angled therefrom toward the peripheral circum-ference of projections 8 thereby forming an angle ~ .
oca-ted below sowing wheel 7 is a flap 11 pivotably mounted upon a shaft 10, the width of flap 11 corresponding~
to width _ of sowing wheel 7. In the operative position illus-.' trated, free end 12 of flap 11 approaches closely to sowing wheel 7. For the purpose of locking flap 11, lever 13 is .~ secured to shaft 10 and is connected, by means of bolt 15, to downward extension 14 of flap 11. A compression spring 16 is arranged on bolt 15 between extension 14 and lever 13. In the operative position as shown in the drawing, no load is .~ being applied to spring 16. This allows flap 11 to pivot re-~;1 siliently away from the sowing wheel 7, should the seed material .....
. contain any large foreign bodies.
Upper surface 17 of flap 11 has extensions 18 on each side projecting upwardly toward sowing wheel 7. Height h of ~S,! these extensions is similar to that of sowing wheel projections ,.~, ."~j , , .

Starting from free end 12 of flap ll, . upper outer edges 20 of extensions 18 initially run tangentially . of surface 21 of sowing wheel 7. Thereafter, they run at an ,. .

: It should be pointed out, in conclusion, that the shape of extensions 18 may also if desired be as shown by dotted , .
