Description
The disclosure modalities generally refer to methods and apparatus for early kick detection in a drilling system with a drilling fluid circulation.
During drilling operations, gas, oil or other fluids in wells at high pressure can flow from the drilled formations to the well hole created during the drilling process. An unplanned influx of the formation into the borehole is called in the kick industry and can occur at unpredictable times. If the kick is not immediately controlled, the well and equipment in the well will be damaged. Currently, a specific commercial meter, such as Coriolis, EM or Doppler meters, can be used for the measurement of inlet or outlet flow in a well surface environment; or using the difference between the input and output of the flow, which is obtained by collecting more information and building more complex models to calibrate the maximum possible output of the flow measured in a rock bottom environment, to detect the kick.
Therefore, it would be desirable if a method and an apparatus were provided for the early detection of the kick with, at least, a simple configuration, high reliability and efficiency.

With reference to Figure 1, an apparatus for the early detection of kicks in a drilling system with a drilling fluid circulation according to a modality is shown. In this illustrated embodiment, the apparatus 1 is usable in an offshore drilling installation that has a drilling fluid circulation 11 in a well drilled under the seabed. A flow of fluids is pumped into the well of a platform on the surface of the water and flows towards a path for incoming fluids. A return flow flows from the well towards the surface through a return path. In one embodiment, as shown in Figure 1, the platform on the water surface is a mud tank.
In this illustrated modality, the apparatus 1 includes a first sensor 10 configured to measure the inlet flow in a drilling fluid pumped into the well. The first sensor 10, positioned in an onshore inlet flow section 101 of the drilling fluid circulation 11, can be a stroke counter connected to a fluid pump that supplies the inlet flow to the path for the inlet fluid. Due to the uniformity of density and other physical properties of fluid entry into the well, several known flow measurement methods can be employed.
O segundo sensor 20,[0013] The apparatus 1 additionally includes a second sensor 20 configured to measure the outflow of the drilling fluid. The second sensor 20,
The device 1 additionally includes a controller 30 in communication with the first sensor 10 and the second sensor 20. The controller 30 comprises a parameter collection unit 31, a calculation unit 32 and a kick detection unit 33.
The parameter 31 collection unit is configured to collect the input flow and the output flow measured by the first sensor 10 and the second sensor 20 in real time.
To) (1)[0016] Calculation unit 32 is configured to calibrate the outflow and to determine a difference in the flow between the inlet flow and the calibrated outlet flow of the drilling fluid. The calculation unit 32 additionally includes a modeling element 321 and a calibration element 322. The modeling element 321 is configured to monitor an evaluation of the input flow and the output flow over time and to obtain a reference standard with based on the evaluation of the input flow and the output flow over time. The calibration element 322 is configured to determine the flow rate calibrated based on the reference standard. For purposes of illustration, a linear function of the inflow and outflow trends, as measured over time, is now assumed to be flows (it is understood that inflow and outflow trends over time of time can be a higher-order function or a non-linear function): VFRout (t) = K * VFRn (t To) (1)
[0017] onde VFR,;, é a vazão de entrada conforme medida, VFR,,, É a vazão de saída conforme medida, t é o tempo, K e T, são os parâmetros variáveis no tempo que podem ser estimados através da seguinte equação:[0017] where VFR,;, is the input flow as measured, VFR ,,, is the output flow as measured, t is the time, K and T, are the time-varying parameters that can be estimated using the following equation:
mintsum (|VFR uu (t) — K* VFRn(t = To)D) (2)mintsum (| VFR uu (t) - K * VFRn (t = To) D) (2)
In normal operation (that is, without occurrence of Kick events), the output flow is equal to the input flow and should be understood as a calibrated output flow (VFR ,,.), Then, the following equation obtainable: VFRoue = VFRin (3)
To) (4)[0019] By replacing equation (3) in equation (1), the following equation can be obtained: VFRoue (8) = K * VFRoue (t - To) (4)
Then, the calibrated output flow can be obtained through equation (4).
After the calibrated flow is obtained, the flow difference can be determined by the following equation (5):
If the inlet flow is constant, the above calibration process can be simplified using the following equation: Tç = 0 VFRor (t) = KVFRh,
The kick detection unit 33 is configured to identify the kicks based on the difference in flow. Specifically, the outflow is always equal to the inlet flow during normal operation (that is, no Kick event occurs), and the flow difference is zero. If the input flow continues to be greater than zero, the flow difference continues to increase, which indicates that a kick event has occurred or is imminent.
[0024] O controlador 30 inclui adicionalmente uma unidade de processamento (34) configurada para pré-processar a vazão de entrada (VFR,;,) e a vazão de saída (VFR, ue) do fluido de perfuração para eliminar as flutuações por filtração para aumentar a precisão do processo de calibração anterior.[0024] Controller 30 additionally includes a processing unit (34) configured to pre-process the inlet flow (VFR,;,) and the outflow flow (VFR, eu) of the drilling fluid to eliminate fluctuations by filtration to increase the accuracy of the previous calibration process.
In some embodiments, apparatus 1 also includes a third sensor 40 configured to collect drilling parameters from the movement of the drill bit. The drilling parameters include the cross-sectional area of the drill bit and the speed of movement of the drill bit. The third sensor 40 is in communication with the well location information transfer specification system and with the controller
In the previous calibration process, the variety of outlet flow caused by the movement of the drill bit also needs to be taken into configuration. The variety of the output flow caused by the movement of the drill bit can be obtained by the following equation: VFRoutariningvie (O = S drillingbitvelocity (t)
[0026] onde S é a área da seção transversal da broca, drillingbitvelocity é a velocidade do movimento da broca de perfuração e VFRoutariningpie O é a vazão de saída causada pelo movimento da broca de perfuração.[0026] where S is the cross-sectional area of the drill bit, drillingbitvelocity is the speed of movement of the drill bit and VFRoutariningpie O is the outflow rate caused by the drill bit movement.
