gaz dans le convertisseur au moins par le conduit-périphérique . normalement;

concentric tubes, the central duct of which is used for the blowing of oxygen, while a protective gas, for example an endothermically dissociating gas such as a hydrocarbon, is introduced through the peripheral duct.
The results obtained with such nozzles are interesting and it has been possible to observe the good behavior of the refractory coatings surrounding these nozzles; the consequence is an increase in the life of the funds of converters equipped in this way.
It sometimes happens that a sometimes total blockage of the peripheral duct occurs, preventing any passage of the protective gas. As a result, only the insufflation of oxygen remains passing through the central duct and it is then very quickly observed that the refractory lining surrounding the nozzles which line the bottom of the converter deteriorates over a relatively large thickness.
The present invention relates to a process for pneumatic refining of cast iron making it possible to remedy the danger presented by the obstruction of the peripheral duct of the blowing nozzles.
The process for refining cast iron in a metallurgical converter, the bottom of which is fitted with nozzles with a double concentric duct and which is intended for blowing, on the one hand, technically pure oxygen or an oxidizing gas very rich in oxygen by the central duct and on the other hand, of protective gas, for example of gas with endothermic dissociation by the peripheral duct, object of the present invention, is essentially characterized in that, during at least part of the time interval separating two successive refining operations, that is to say during the time interval called "between castings", is blown with
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
gas in the converter at least through the peripheral duct. normally;
used for the protective fluid, @
According to the invention, the blown gas is advantageously air or nitrogen.
It has been observed that the main effect of this blowing of nitrogen between two runs was to prevent the formation of sealing deposits at the orifice of the nozzles, deposits due to the cooling of the refractory, slag or metallic materials streaming along the bottom of the nozzle. converter when the container is in the so-called folded position; this danger presents itself particularly as long as the temperature in the converter is greater than about 500 ° C., the gas blowing is advantageously provided during all the time when the temperature is above this limit.
A side effect of the gas blowing according to the process which is the subject of the invention is to avoid the rise in temperature of the nozzles during the shutdowns separating two refining operations. temperature rise due for example to radiation from the lefractaries of the converter.
Finally, the insufflation of gas recommended in the present invention also allows cleaning or purging of the conduits before and after the refining operation.
By way of example and in no way limiting the refining process which is the subject of the invention, the appended figure shows an operation carried out in the recommended manner.
