<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

Adjustable seat
The present invention relates to an adjustable seat the inclination of which, both that of the entire seat and that of the seat relative to its backrest, is adjustable.
In its object, the present invention, which is an improvement of the main patent, provides that the body forming the seat proper, and the backrest, in the region of their transverse sides facing each other, are connected. to each other, in an adjustable way, by means of chains with quadruple articulation. On the other hand, the entire seat, that is to say the seat itself and the backrest, is connected to the frame using articulated arms,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
limited displacement, the anterior articulated arms, inclined forward, being in engagement with the seat, while the posterior arms, slightly inclined towards the rear, are engaged each time with a transmission member of the chains to quadruple articulation.
Such a seat is, moreover, equipped with spring elements, which are intended to provide sufficient resistance to the movements relating to the adjustment.
The object of the invention is a device making it possible, without manipulations, to bring the seat first from the normal sitting position to a rearward position more inclined than hitherto, that is to say the position called "television", while maintaining the angle between the seat proper and the backrest, then, after overcoming an increased resistance, clearly perceptible, to bring it into a lying position, in which the angle between the seat and the backrest is larger, without the resistance to this displacement depending on the spring elements, so as to obtain the same resistance to this displacement for heavy persons and for light persons.
To this end, according to an essential characteristic of the invention, the point of articulation of the anterior articulation arm, in engagement with the seat, the lower anterior articulation joint and the posterior articulation point and lower part of the quadruple articulation chain. are arranged relative to each other in the manner of ball-and-socket washers, so that for a small angle of the seat the anterior and lower articulation point of the quadruple-articulated chain is located below the position extension of elements

articulation arranged with respect to each other in the manner of ball joint levers, while with a large angle of the seat, these elements are placed above said extended position.
According to a preferred embodiment of the device according to the invention, the front transmission member of each quadruple articulated chain extends substantially in the same direction with respect to the transverse side of the seat and is connected to said chain. seat in a rigid manner, while the adjacent upper transmission member carries the backrest and is engaged with the rear articulation arm mounted on the frame and connected to said upper drive member.
According to another advantageous characteristic of the invention, in the arrangement which has just been described, the point of articulation of the posterior articulation arm, on the posterior transmission member, is arranged in front of the upper articulation point of the anterior transmission member connected to the seat, while the posterior transmission member preferably has a cantilevered arm directed forward and preferably forming a unit with it,
According to another advantageous characteristic of the invention, the upper transmission member, carrying the backrest, and the posterior transmission member which is connected to it, of the quadruple articulation catcher, can move against each other. the tension of a spring,
preferably a tension coil spring, while furthermore one end of the tension coil spring is preferably attached to the cantilever arm of the or-

posterior transmission gane,
A preferred embodiment of the invention is shown schematically and simply by way of example in the appended drawing in which: FIG. 1 is a view in longitudinal section of an adjustable seat in the "sitting" position. normal.
Fig. 2 is a view of the same seat in the seated position, but the seat tilted more rearward than in FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 is a corresponding view, the seat being in the extended position.
A seat proper 1 is connected in an articulated manner by means of quadruple articulation chains arranged on both sides to a backrest 2, each of said quadruple articulation chains being formed by a transmission member 1 connected in such a manner. rigid to the seat 1, by a transmission member 4 carrying the backrest 2, and by transmission members 2 and 6. This seat body is carried by articulated arms 7 and 8, provided on each side, and which are mounted on a frame 9. At least one of these articulation arms is equipped with stops to limit the extent of tilting.
While each time the anterior articulated arm 7, slightly inclined forward, is engaged with the seat 1, the posterior articulated arm
8, which is slightly inclined backwards, is each time articulated on a cantilevered arm 10, formed directly in the transmission member 5.
In this device, the articulation points 11, 12 and 13 are arranged substantially in the manner of a ball-joint lever, and this in such a way that, in the case of a small seat angle,
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the articulation point 12 is located below the extension position 14 of the articulation members 1 and 6 in the form of ball and socket levers, while said articulation point 12, when the angle of the seat is modified is moved upwards above the extension position 14. There is furthermore provided, at least on one side of the seat, a tension coil spring 15, the ends of which are connected to the member of the seat. drive 4 and the cantilever arm 10 of the transmission member 5.
This spring 15 cooperates with the return of the seat back out of the extended position corresponding to the greatest angle between the seat itself and the backrest (freeze 3), in a position where the angle of the seat with the backrest is low (figs 1 or 2), and, when the seat is not carrying any load, said spring maintains the elements of the seat in the positions indicated in figs 1 and 2.
Regardless of the fact that with such a seat made in accordance with the invention, the width 16 of the slot existing between the seat itself 1 and the backrest 2, remains substantially the same in all the positions of the seat, the resistance displacement, when the angle between the seat and the backrest is increased, is already relatively high from the start of the said displacement operation, without having. at the same time need to have recourse to springs. However, this resistance to displacement gradually increases, at the beginning, then, then, becomes weaker and weaker.
This results in a certain determined control of the movements of the displacement transmission members, so that, when the seat is moved, as a result of the displacement of the weight of the seated person, out of the normal sitting position (freeze 1),
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
one first obtains, almost necessarily, the sitting position shown in FIG. 2, from which it is only then possible to reach the lying position (fig. 3).
It is particularly advantageous in this case that, in the extended position, the force necessary to maintain said extended position is substantially less than the resistance to displacement exerted at the start, so that said extended position can be also preserved by light persons, for example children, and that a slight displacement of the weight does not already cause an involuntary variation of the position of the seat.
All this is moreover obtained automatically, given that when the angle of the seat increases, the articulation weight 12 is necessarily moved beyond the extended position 14. Consequently, the device according to the The invention does not exclude only an adjustment of the angle of the seat.
The features emerging from the. description and / or drawing are considered essential parts. of the invention, both individually and in combinations.
