<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
être atteint pendant le processus de séchage courant (après l'application de la pâte de rongeage), c'est-à-dire que les composés ne doivent pas être considérablement volatils dans les conditions du séchage;

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

Gnawing in white.
The preparation of white gnats, i.e. the localized (partial) destruction of dyes on dyed textile, is carried out either by reduction or by a combination of reduction and the action of compounds of. quaternary ammonium. The reducing agents most commonly used in practice are the sodium salt of hydroxymethane-sulfinic acid (German patent 165,807) and the zinc salt of hydroxymethanesulfinic acid (Diserens, 2nd ed. Volume 1, page 69). Thiourea dioxide or its transposition product formamidine sulfinic acid has also been used for some time, especially for gnawing synthetic fibers.
Stains with azo dyes are often sufficiently reddish
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
with these agents in an alkaline, neutral or acidic medium.
In the case of vat dyes, which are fixed by reduction via the salts of the leuoo-derivative on the textile material, satisfactory gnawing is obtained in many cases by benzylation of the leuco form with the aid of compounds. quaternary ammonium, for example with phenyl-dimethyl-benzyl-ammonium chloride or with the calcium salt of disulfonic acid of this compound (German Patents Nos. 231,543 and 235,879). In the case of the use of the calcium salt of the disulfonic acid of the phenyl-dimethyl-benzyl-ammonium ohloride, a soluble compound is obtained because with the benzyl residue is introduced a sulfonic group, hence the leuco - weakly colored benzyl derivative is removable by washing,
while in the case where phenyl-dimethyl-benzyl-ammonium chloride is used, the benzylated leuco-derivative remains largely on the fiber and thus a gnawing is fixed in the inherent color of the com. got.
The use of gnawing pastes with the addition of benzylated quaternary ammonium compounds is also satisfactory for! a series of other dyes, especially in the case of naphthol series coupling dyes, which are not sufficiently gnawable with the common gnawing paste of hydroxy-methane-sulfinic acid sodium salt or zinc salt of hydroxymethane-aulfinic acid, with or without the addition of alkali. In the case of precursors producing phthalocyanine pigments or dyes with the phthalocyanine dyes, for example by the process of German Patent No. 888,837, it is observed that the unsulphonated quaternary compound is considerably more active than the calcium salt of l. disulfonic acid (J. Eibl, Melliand Textilberichte 7 [1958], p. 774).
In this case, it turns out that nitrogenous nuclear systems are more easily degradable by benzylation.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The use of other quaternary ammonium compounds is, inter alia, described in US Patents 2,902,453, 2,587,597 and 3,074,774.
We have just made the surprising discovery that the gnawing effect, in the case of the use of gnawing pastes which contain as gnawing agents quaternary ammonium compounds with benzylating action, can be further increased when the gnawing pastes additionally contain benzylable amines, tertiary and / or salts of these amines.
The reasons for the better gnawing capacity of these gnawing pastes have not yet been fully elucidated. It is assumed that the benzyl group, which under the conditions of gnawing separates from the quaternary ammonium compound, attacks not the dye or the precursor product of the dye, for example the leuco-derivative of the dye, but instead s unites with the benzylable tertiary amine, whereby an ammonium compound is obtained which releases one of the other residues of the initially tertiary amine; this separable residue probably enters into reaction with the dye.
The assumption of the process described is however not certain and cannot be considered as a limitation of the claimed process.
Among the benzylable tertiary amines to be used according to the process, those which have the formula

are of particular interest, the R, R1 and R2 radicals representing aloyl radicals containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms, which may themselves be substituted and in which the sum of the carbon atoms of the R, R1 and R2 radicals is greater than 4; the boiling point of the compounds (I) must not

be achieved during the current drying process (after application of the gnawing paste), i.e. the compounds should not be significantly volatile under the conditions of drying;
the boiling points of tertiary amines (I) are preferably located above 75 C; therefore trimethylamine is not of advantageous use.
In fact the residues R and R1, optionally with the intervention of other heteroatoms such as -Il- or -O-, can form a ring; the tertiary amines of formula (I) are free from soyubilizing groups such as sulfonic acid and carboxylic acid groups. Instead of the tertiary amines themselves one can also use in neutral and equal acid gnawing. ment of sala amines, especially those with organic acids like lactic acid and similar acids. preferably lactates.

Likewise the quaternary ammonium compounds contained in accordance with the process in the gnawing pastes, which have a benzylating action, are described in many points of the literature, among others in the American patents cited at the beginning as well as in the

Other additives can be for example zinc oxide and alkali, such as for example sodium hydroxide or potassium carbonate. The constituents of the gnawing pastes are not, however, limited to these indications, given that the essential criterion of the invention lies in the addition of the benzylable tertiary anine to the known gnawing pastes containing at least one ammonium compound. quaternary with benzylating action.
The proportion of total gnawing agents, including benzylable tertiary amines, is generally 7 to 45% by weight of printing paste. Here the amounts of the various gnawing agents can vary within wide limits, as is well known in the art. The proportion of the benzylatable tertiary amines which enhance the gnawing action relative to the total amount of the gnawing agents in the gnawing paste is established from the amount involved of the quaternary ammonium compound with benzylating action. The amount by weight of tertiary amine and quaternary ammonium compound is preferably in the range of 10: 100 to 100: 100, preferably in the range of 20: 100 to 100: 100.
The proportion of the quaternary ammonium compound with benzylating action relative to the total amount of the gnawing paste in turn is preferably 10 to 200 g per 1000 g of paste, preferably 20 to 100 g per 1000 g of dough. According to this, the proportion of tertiary amine relative to the total amount of the gnawing paste is 0.1 to 20% and preferably 2 to 20%.

Isolated benzylable tertiary amines can be employed. ment, or their salts, or also mixtures of these amines, It is found that the gnawing action of printing pastes is generally markedly enhanced and often considerably increased. This is especially true for dyes which have been obtained by the use of dye constituents containing nuclear nitrogen, for example carbazol derivatives, which are copulated onto the fiber.
A typical example for a gnawing paste to be used according to the invention contains for example 400 g of a common thickener, for example a thickener with Britien gum.: Or with tragacanth, 100 to 200 g of formaldehyde sulfoxylate. of zinc, 20 to 100 g of a benzylatable tertiary amine, 0 to 30 g of a wetting agent, for example p-benzyl-aminobenzenesulfonic acid, 25 to 100 g of a compound of gnawing quaternary ammonium, for example
