<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

PROCESS AND BASIN OVEN FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF GLASS.
Main Patent No. 637,662 relates to a method of supplying to at least one side wall of a glass tank furnace, the melting residues which cover the central part of the glass bath while the glass is cooled in the glass bath. work area returns countercurrently to the charging area, a process which consists of channeling cooled glass from the work area and directing it towards at least one of the side areas of the basin oven .
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The main patent No. 637,662 also relates to a glass basin furnace for carrying out the method comprising a wall rising from the bottom, extending transversely to the side walls, but interrupted near at least one of the side walls so as to leave between it and said side wall, a dressing for the return of the cooled lower glass to the charging area. In particularly advantageous implementations of the invention, said transverse wall is provided with two submerged wings extending from the bottom and directed towards the furnace area.
It has in fact been observed that the previous remedies proposed for diverting the residue of fu @ on which floats upstream of the floating dams in the zone subjected to the action of the flames to the side walls are ineffective. Among the proposals already put to the test we can cite the slowing down of the ignition of the burner flames in the case of transverse burners, the injection of a fluid or of additional fuel or of flames in the axis of the basin.
These solutions certainly tend to increase the activity of the surface currents circulating between the fusion and the working zone to deflect them from the central part towards the side walls under the influence of the increase, around the surface of the bath. , of the transverse temperature gradient between the axis of the basin and these walls, but the expansion of the range of said surface currents remains insufficient and it still often happens that part of the frank siliceous scum
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
crisscross the barriers and make their way to the machines.
the invention referred to in main patent No. 637,662 and which has been described above in its general form, eliminates these drawbacks,
In practice, however, it has been observed that the solution of the problem of the expansion of the range of surface cuts, mastered by the application of the main invention making it possible to govern very effectively the distribution of temperatures in the glass one through the basin, can still be significantly improved.
In effect, in some embodiments of the main invention, a zone of glass, adjacent to the middle, is isolated from the chilled bottom glass streams. This insulation is achieved by constructing on the bottom of the basin in the zone subjected to the action of the flames a set of at least three walls, namely a transverse wall, interrupted near at least one of the side walls on at least part of its height from the bottom, and two submerged wings, directed towards the charging area. Thanks to this device described in the main patent, the cooled lower glass is forced to rise to the surface of the bath in the zone of action of the flames before returning to the working zone.
The main purpose of the ascent path imposed on the stream of cooled glass is to prevent it from withdrawing heat from the part of the surface molten glass heading towards the work zone in the middle part of the furnace. In practice, it has been found to be difficult to prevent the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
withdrawal of the calories and, on the other hand, that the rise of the stream of cooled glass was effected all the more slowly as efforts were made to prevent this withdrawal.
Already, in a preferred embodiment of the main invention, attempts have been made to overcome these drawbacks by making on the bottom of the basin a construction forming a complete quadrilateral by joining the & two submerged wings by a submerged wall, extending from the bottom, parallel to the aforesaid transverse wall and located in relation to it, towards the charging zone:
. It is certain that this embodiment brings an improvement, because the stream of cooled glass must rise to the top of the transverse wall located in the charging zone before moving again towards the working zone and, therefore , must take the necessary calories in the upstream zone of the construction before passing over the glass trapped in the complete quadrilateral. In subsequent practice it was found that this improvement was not sufficient and that the two above-mentioned disadvantages had not been eliminated in a manner which was both flexible and efficient.
The improved process according to the present invention, in which a construction comprising at least three walls is made on the bottom of the basin in the zone subjected to the action of the flames: a transverse wall, interrupted near at least one of the walls. side walls over at least part of its height from the bottom, and two submerged wings, directed towards the charging area,
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
so as to bring to at least one side wall melt residues which cover the central part of the bath. glass, and while the glass cooled in the working zone returns countercurrently to the charging zone, allows, on the other hand, to eliminate these drawbacks and also provides certain advantages which will become apparent during the 'set out below.
According to the invention, additional calories are added to the mass of molten glass included within the construction.
This process provides the advantage of maintaining the trapped glass at a higher temperature allowing faster heating of the cooled earth current during its rise. In addition, it allows calories to be taken from the mass of molten glass, included within the building, by the surface current of the central zone moving above the building.
In a preferred variant of the process, additional electric heating is carried out in the mass of molten glass included within the construction. This supply of additional calories is then carried out easily. Advantageously, in the case where this supply of additional calories is regulated, the choice of electric heating makes it possible to make the process according to the invention particularly flexible and efficient.
The present invention also has as an object a glass basin furnace for carrying out the process according to the invention, comprising a construction made on the bottom of the basin in the zone subjected to the action.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
@ flames and comprising at least three walls: = a transverse wall, interrupted near at least one of the side walls over at least part of its height from the bottom and two submerged wings, directed towards the zone of charging and further comprising means for supplying additional calories in the mass of molten glass included within the construction.
In an advantageous form of the device according to the invention, said means are electrical resistors immersed in the mass of fused glass included inside the construction. In another equally advantageous form of the device according to the invention, the means are electrodes coming into contact with the mass of molten glass included within said construction.
These two embodiments of the device are particularly suitable for adjusting the expansion of the fan towards the side walls.
The invention is illustrated by the drawing below, showing, by way of non-limiting examples, certain embodiments of the oven according to the invention.
Figure 1 is a horizontal section at the broken line I / I of Figure 2, in a first embodiment of the furnace according to the invention.
FIG. 2 is a vertical section corresponding to the line II / II of FIG. 1, the scale of the heights having been greatly exaggerated with respect to that of the lengths, in view of the clarity of the drawing.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
FIG. 3 is a horizontal section at the level of line III / III of FIG. 4, in a second manufacturer of the furnace according to the invention.
FIG. 4 is a vertical section corresponding to the line IV / IV of FIG. 3, the scale of the heights having been greatly exaggerated with respect to that of the lengths.
In these different figures, the same reference notations designate identical elements.
The glass basin furnace shown in Figures 1 and 2, comprises, at one end, projections 1 where the raw materials are placed in the oven and from which they float on the glass bath 2 for the part. of this bath close to its level 3 advances in the direction of arrow 4 towards the opposite end of the furnace where the glass is taken for its work in places such as 5.
The places 1 where the charging takes place can be considered as part of a melting zone 6 where @ the material melts and becomes homogenized before reaching a zone 7 where it is refined, this zone being called for this "sharpening zone" motif. On leaving this, the superficial hot glass first passes through a narrow part 8 joining the refining zone 7 to the working zone 9, then flows into the working zone 9 towards the sampling points 5. .
In Figures 1 and 2, two sets of five burners 10 of which only four are shown, are arranged in the openings 11 drilled in the side walls 12 and 13. Among these, two sets of three burners 10 heat the melting zone. 6; while the
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
refining zone receives heat from the other two burners 10.
Near the entrance to the re-flow part 8, a floating barrier 14 extending from one side wall 12 to the other 13 prevents the impurities which float on the bath from reaching the places 5. The cooled glass which is hole - ve in contact with the sole 15 in the working zone 9, crosses the narrowed part 8 along the sole 15 to move towards the melting zone 6.
According to the principal invention, the stream of cooled glass is diverted from the direct path that it would follow along the median part of the sole 15, by the fact that it meets in this part a submerged wall 16 extending - Dant transversely to the side walls 12 and 13, interrupted near the foot of the side walls 12 and 13, but which extends, above this foot, to these two walls. It therefore has near the foot of each of these, a sluice 17 for the passage of the stream of cooled glass which is therefore divided into two streams which follow the sole 15 along the side walls by the fact that they are guided at the bottom. means of the submerged wings 18 and 19 with which the submerged wall 16 is provided towards the fusion zone 6.
These submerged wings extend from hearth 15 into ripening zone 7 and terminate in the part of the ripening zone adjacent to melting zone 6. In other embodiments, the wings submerged 18 and 19 may advantageously extend into the part of the melting zone 6. With the side walls 12 and 13 and the sole 15, the submerged wings 18 and
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
19 form, in this way, channels which guide the cooled glass towards the melting zone 6.when the cooled glass ceases to be guided towards the melting zone by the submerged wings. 18 and 19, it can then spread over the entire distance between the side walls 12 and 13. A part of this glass can therefore be drawn again towards the work zone while it passes in addition to the wings 18 and 19.
As a result, it cools to a certain extent the surface glass which travels towards the working zone 9 in the middle part of the furnace.
In accordance with the invention, in order to remedy this drawback, means of supplying additional heat to the molten glass mass included inside the construction can be constituted by electrodes 20 which come into contact with each other. with the mass of molten glass included within said construction. These electrodes 20 are introduced into said mass of glass from the sole 15 located under said structure and are connected by conductors 21 to a suitable voltage source and not shown in FIG. 2.
During the rise of the glass and of its passage between the wings 18 and 19, it is thus possible to heat the rising glass more efficiently and in a very flexible manner, so that the cooling which the latter causes in the current of surface glass passing towards the work zone in the middle part of the furnace, is strongly attenuated. Therefore, the transverse component of the surface current of the middle part will be increased.
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
forced and the formation of the fan in aera appreciably favored.
In Figures 1 and 2, the solid lines designated by 22 schematically the paths followed by the surface glass on which float the melt residues. These impurities can be easily removed by skimming in the vicinity of the boom 14 by acting from the windows 23. The broken lines 24 schematically show the paths followed in the vicinity of the sole 15 by the cooled glass.
Figures 3 and 4 illustrate a second embodiment of the oven according to the invention. In the furnace according to Figures 3 and 4, an additional submerged wall..25 is constructed in the melting zone 6, which extends from the sole 15, parallel to the wall 14. This construction is carried out. a complete quadrilateral which obliterates the cold glass which spreads in the melting chamber, to go up to the top of the wall 25 before moving again towards the work area.
In the complete quadrilateral, where the glass maintains a temperature higher than that of the lateral channels in which the return currents circulate, the imprisoned mass of glass nevertheless undergoes on the passage of the surface glass current, a temperature difference that the pre - its invention significantly reduced.
In accordance with the invention, electrical resistors 26 are introduced into the mass of molten glass comprised within the complete quadrilateral, from the sole 15 located below the complete quadrilateral.
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
The submerged electrical resistors 26 are connected by the conductors 27 to a suitable voltage source and not shown in * FIG. 4. Thanks to this device, the thermal fluctuations of the imprisoned glass mass are not very sensitive and the development of the fan towards the side walls can be adjusted with great flexibility.
It is obvious that the invention is not limited to the few embodiments which have just been described and that many modifications can be made in the form, the arrangement and the constitution of various elements intervening in this case. its realization, without departing from the gates of the present invention.
