<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

<Desc/Clms Page number 20>

Degreasing, drying and cleaning of objects.
The present invention relates to apparatus and methods for degreasing, drying and cleaning with organic solvents the surfaces of small, non-abrasive objects.
Chlorinated hydrocarbon solvents, more particularly trichlorethylene and perchlorethylene, are widely used in industry to remove these fats, oils and other insoluble contaminants from solid surfaces, in particular metallic elements and non-porous apparatus. have been
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
developed to treat the objects to be cleaned and at the same time to handle solvents in complete safety. Degreasing can be carried out by washing the objects in the liquid solvent, usually hot, boiled, or in the vapor of the boiling liquid or in combination with these two types of operations.
In order to avoid a loss of solvent from the degreasing apparatus and contamination of the ambient atmosphere by solvent vapors, the degreasing operation must be carried out so that the object is free of any solvent to. exit from the device into the atmosphere. This requirement is difficult to meet when the articles to be degreased have recesses and blind holes which do not drip freely in all positions and which can retain fluid solvent.
Large items which are individually degreased can be rotated as they are removed from the unit to drain these recesses, but small items often have to be mass-treated in baskets and cannot be degreased or cleaned. separately.
An attempt to solve this problem which has had some success consists in driving the objects into the installation in a closed basket and to provide a mechanism in the installation which rotates the basket around a horizontal axis during the operation. degreasing and during a subsequent draining operation so that the objects are tumbled and washed and then drained before leaving the atmosphere. But loading and unloading baskets is tedious and does not interfere with the operation of Orne's continuous production line.
Similar problems arise for secneles surfacer. contaminated with water from small objects of metal or other non-absorbent material when surfaces are treated with a chlorinated hydrocarbon solvent containing, when dissolved, an amount not exceeding 1% by weight of an agent cationic surfactant, conne

one from the other, the punctures being arranged so that the objects pass through the intervals without being stopped when the conveyor turns. Another method is to make the partransporter turn. Another method consists of making the perforated part of the casing of the conveyor of metal pierced with holes uniformly distributed over its entire surface.
A feeds objects to be treated, for example degreaser, through the apparatus by feeding them into the open top end of the inner cord of the rotating conveyor.
At the bottom of the inner duct, the oDjets enter the outer duct and come into contact with the liquid solvent or solvent vapor as described in detail below, and, as the carrier rotates, they are carried downward. high in the helical duct and disconnected by the upper end of this duct.
of course, in order to ensure that the objects are driven up smoothly, the angle that the carrier elm with the horizontal must be calculated together with the pitch of the propeller and the diameter. interior of this helical duct so that the inclination to the nelical path with respect to the horizontal is at all points greater than the angle of repose of the objects treated. If desired, protruding ears or shoulders may be provided at intervals on the inner surface of the peripheral wall of the conveyor to promote jamming rather than sliding of the objects along the discharge propeller to assist the draining of solvent from any recesses or hollows in the objects.
The simplest form for the inner feed duct is a straight axial duct and this form is preferable for light and strong objects. For heavy or delicate objects which can be damaged by a rapid descent into a straight duct when the feed is turned off, a helical feed duct may be preferable as this duct ensures a smooth descent of the objects when transporting. -
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
The supply and discharge conduits may communicate with each other at their lower ends through one or more windows which are in the form of a straight conduit or a small end of a helical conduit. Alternatively,
the supply and discharge conduits can communicate by terminating in a small common chamber located at the lower end of the conveyor.
The embodiment according to the invention which allows the objects to be anenes by a central conauit at the bottom of an Archimedean screw has the advantage of eliminating any interference between the devices driving the objects, for example a feed chute and the screw itself. Objects; -. themselves or metal particles adhering thereto are thus unlikely to be arrested. It has also been found that it is impossible to overload the screw with this feeding method.
The solvents used for degreasing, drying or cleaning and drying according to the invention can be one of the solvents usually used as solvents for greases, for example trichlorethylene, perchlorethylene, methylchloroform, methylene chloride, tetrachloride. carbon, 1.1.2-trichloro-1.2.2-trifluoroethane, 1,2-dichloroethylene and these mixtures of these solvents. In the case of the invention, these halogenated hydrocarbon solvents can also be used in admixture with other solvents, for example one or more hydrocarbons.
Suitable canonical surfactants for use in the cleaning and drying process are, for example, those listed in UK Patent No. 835,072 as suitable for the claimed drying process.
When using an apparatus according to the invention as described above for degreasing odjets, by suitably arranging the levels of liquid and ae degreasing vapors in the apparatus with respect to the part to the conveyor which is contained
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
in the tank, the objects can be subjected to degreasing in a liquid solvent, or in solvent vapors or in liquid and vapors.
The relative processing times in the liquid and the vapors can also be varied by suitably adjusting the length of the perforated portion of the casing to the conveyor along the periphery of the helical duct, but it is understood that at least an upper part of the part of the conveyor which is contained in the tank, for example the part of the conveyor which is in the substantially vapor-free zone, still has the perforations in order to allow the objects to vapor-dry with their solvent residual before leaving the device.
In one embodiment of an apparatus according to the invention, the conveyor is provided with perforation: for the passage of liquid solvent or solvent vapors through the casing all along the periphery at the conauit of helical discharge.
Degreasing of the objects can then be carried out (a) in a flowing liquid by suitably arranging the conveyor and the depth of the mass of boiling degreasing solvent in the tank so that a lower part of the conveyor is submerged in the tank. liquiae, or (b) in solvent vapors only by arranging the levels of the boiling liquid and of the vapor condenser so that a zone charged with vapors acts between these two levels and by installing the conveyor so that a part lower than the conveyor is located in this zone charged with vapors but not immersed in the boiling liquid, or (c)
first in boiling liquid and then in vapors, ensuring that a lower part of the conveyor is submerged in the boiling liquid and an adjacent higher part is located in a zone loaded with vapors above. above the liquid, but it is understood that in all cases, the objects pass end ... rise through a zone in
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
substance free of vapors in the region of the condenser where the residual degreasing solvent evaporates from the hot objects which are thus substantially dry when they leave the apparatus.
The degreasing in a boiling liquid described in the previous paragraph has the disadvantage that the liquid in which the oojets are washed is gradually contaminated with grease and dirt when the apparatus is in operation. According to another embodiment of the apparatus according to the invention, washing in a clean liquid and cnaud is easily carried out.
In this execution elm, the conveyor does not immerse the boiling liquiae in the tank but is installed with its lower part in a vapor zone, for example to degrease the objects by means of the vapors and the perforations of the casing. located along the! periphery of the conauit of helical discharge are baked in a leader part of this lower part so as to form a conauit section ae closed or imperforate discharge in which the. not ae the propeller can maintain to the liquid.
Achievements are planned for debltering clean condensed solvent or a vapor condenser in the helical part imperforated by openings threatened in the casing very close to the upper part of this part and openings also provided, to evacuate the liquid with a step. helicoîaal at the next lower pitch, in the wall or coil separating the pitches on at least one complete turn of the helix at the upper end of the imporforated part.
Condensed liquia from the steam condenser can be aerated into the imperforate nelical part by gravity or pumped there. A preferred method, however, is to return the condensate to a fixed or free liquid container placed inside the main tank and to attach at least one lifting spoon to the casing at the conveyor so that when the conveyor rotates, the spoon (s) immerse in the clean liquid contained in the container and transfer the liquid through
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
perforations made in the casing of the conveyor in a pitch of the helix towards the upper bottom of the imperforated part.
The vent openings which connect the helical steps to the upper end of the imperforate helical portion may be in the form of a seille line of perforations which runs along the wall or a coil which separates the steps on to the wall. least one turn of the propeller and which preferably start near the periphery in the spoon region and curve inward and downwardly of the propeller. As a variant, the separation wall or coil may be perforated over its entire surface over an arc of at least 360 of the helical path or it may again be formed, over at least one revolution of the helix, of overlapping elements. - edges spaced apart from each other so that, when the propeller turns,
the treated objects pass over the gaps without passing through and the gaps allow the liquid to flow freely from one pitch of the propeller to the next lower pitch. These openings ensure that the liquid discharged in the imperforate helical part flows downwards into this part countercurrently to the objects, without overflowing over its upper end, and forms a series of pockets in the lower pitches of the object. imperforate part where no discharge opening is provided between the steps, the levels of the pockets being established by overflowing the liquids from one step to the next over the upper surface of the interior supply duct.
The imperforate part of the conveyor can be located at its lower end so that the degreased objects are solvent washed as soon as they reach the lower part of the discharge propeller. In this case, the lower pitch of the propeller is provided with discharge openings through which solvent which flows downward along the imperforate part of the propeller can be sent into the vessel. Alternatively, the imperforate part can be spaced near the lower end of the conveyor

With this arrangement, the objects are first subjected to a treatment with solvent vapors which enter through the perforated lower part of the casing and then to backwashing with liquid which descends into the imperforate part and which returns to the tank through the perforated lower part of the casing. With these two arrangements, the treatment with a clean liquid in the imperforate part of the conveyor can be followed, if desired, by a treatment in solvent vapors by extending the vapor-free zone of the oven to cover it. screw part of the conveyor located above the elevating spoon region, this part being perforated along the

<Desc / Clms Page number 16>
periphery of the helical duct in the region of an auilière and extending inwardly in perforations which descend around the helix so as to allow free drainage of the pitch which receives solvent from the spoons. As a variant, to allow even better drainage, the spiral wall 32 can be perforated as shown in FIG. 7 over its entire surface,. on an arc of 360. Also alternatively, at least one turn of the helical coil wall 32 may be formed of overlapping elements as shown in FIG. 8.
When the propeller rotates in the direction indicated by the arrow, the objects to be treated slide over the gaps 40 without passing through and the gaps allow the solvent to pass from one step to another. no Next lower.
With any of these embodiments, solvent which passes into the propeller from the spoons through the perforations 31 may flow downward into the imperforate portion 23 of the propeller and may eventually return to the mass of liquid. 3 to. through the perforated lower end shutter 24. Objects which enter the helical duct 7 from the Axial augmentation duct 10 through the window 11 are thus backwashed in clean solvent as they rise through the window. the 1.% Perforated part of the propeller.
Fig. 5 shows an apparatus according to the invention suitable for drying or cleaning objects which are good absorbent:!. In fig. 5, the outer casing 8 of the conveyor is perforated at its upper part and at its retort lower part indicated by vertical hatching and the lower part is immersed in the liquid mass 3. An intermediate part 30 of the outer casing 8 placed entirely above the liquid 3 is imperforated so that, in this part, the steps of the propeller cannot drip through the peripheral casing.
Four spoons 25 (of which only three are visible in the drawing) are attached to the peripheral wall of the upper pitch of the imperforate helical portion 34 and are arranged symmetrically around the circumference of the conveyor so that when the
<Desc / Clms Page number 17>
conveyor rotated the spoons are successively plunged into a container 26 placed in the tank.
When the apparatus is used to dry objects,. the mass of liquid 3 comprises an organic solvent, preferably a chlorinated hydrocarbon solvent, for example trichlorethylene containing, in the dissolved state, an amount not exceeding 1% by weight of a cationic surfactant and, when l The apparatus is used for cleaning and drying objects, the liquid 3 further contains a proportion of water not exceeding 5% by weight. Vapors from the boiling liquid 3 condense on the water-cooled coils 4 and the condensate is collected in a collection tray 27 which extends around the interior of the walls of the vessel.
This condensate passed through line 35 to separator 36 where the chlorinated hydrocarbon solvent separates into a lower solvent layer and an upper water layer. The solvent layer passes through line 37 to vessel 26 from where it is drawn off by spoons 25. When the vessel is full, any excess solvent may overflow into the body of liquid 3. Water overflows from the separator. 36 via a pipe 38 and can be drained when the apparatus is used to dry objects or can be returned entirely or in part to the liquid 3 (by a connection not shown) so as to maintain the necessary proportion of water when the The appliance is used to clean and dry objects.
Perforations are made in the outer casing 8 below each spoon as well as in the walls or turns separating a pitch of the helical duct from the following pitch over an arc of at least 360 at the upper extract of the imperforate part 34 of so that the solvent entrained by the spoons can flow into the helical duct and then overflow down one pitch from the helix to the next in this perforated part and then flow out of the conveyor by the perforations made in the lower part of the outer casing 8 in the body of liquid 3.
Since the imperforate part 34 of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 18>
conveyor is placed entirely above and spaced from liquid 3, the solvent flowing from the conveyor in this way enters liquid 3 at a point far enough from the submerged lower end of the conveyor to avoid local dilution excessive liquid mixing in this region of the tank.
The objects to be treated are introduced into the open upper end of the axial duct 10 as indicated at 21, descend into this duct and, when the conveyor turns, they pass through the window 11 in the lower pitch of the helical duct 7. The uninterrupted rotation of the conveyor causes the objects to move up this helical duct until they are unloaded from the open upper end of the propeller, as shown at 22. In the lower part of the propeller, there where the outer wall is perforated, the objects are automatically brought into contact with the boiling liquid mixture 3 to be dried or to be cleaned and dried, as the case may be.
In the middle part 34 of the propeller where the outer wall is imperforate the objects are transported upwards out of the liquid mixture.
3 and are rinsed in clean, distilled organic solvent discharged into the helical duct by the spoons 25 and, as the objects rise further, they are freed by drying any residual solvent by draining and evaporation through the perforations in the upper part. of the outer casing of the propeller.
The arrangement of the conveyor shown in FIG. 5 can also be used to degrease objects with two-phase liquid. For this mode of operation, the mass of liquid 3 comprises a pure degreasing solvent so that the objects are first washed in the boiling liquid contained in the lower part of the conveyor and then washed with clean distilled solvent in the part. imperforated.
The following drying and cleaning processes, the invention have been described with reference to the drawings in their preferred embodiments, in which the objects are
<Desc / Clms Page number 19>
rinsed in clean organic solvent after being removed from the liquid mixture used to remove solid contaminants and / or water from their surfaces and the apparatus shown in fig. 5 is constructed so as to ensure this rinsing in a clean solvent.
But, if one does not seek to achieve perfection in the finish of the surfaces of the objects, the solvent rinsing can be done and a simplified cleaning and / or drying process can be carried out in the apparatus described with reference to. fig. 1 for degreasing objects, in which the Archimedean screw conveyor is provided with perforations along the entire length of its outer casing, the container of clean liquid and the spoons being omitted and the only modification necessary is to add a condensate collection tray below the water-cooled condenser coils and a water separator shown for example at 27 and 36, respectively, in FIG.
5 so that the accumulation of water in the apparatus can be controlled and the separated solvent distillate can be returned to the manifold of the apparatus with or without a certain proportion of water, as desired. In this process, a sufficient quantity of the mixture of drying and cleaning liquid is placed in the manifold of the apparatus so that the objects to be treated are washed with this mixture through the perforations made in a lower part of the conveyor and s' then drain and: evaporate above the level of the liquid in the upper part of the conveyor.
This form of apparatus can be known so that when the objects come out of the liquid mixture in which they are submerged in the lower part of the conveyor, they pass through a zone of solvent vapors before entering the zone of. evaporation located in the region of the vapor conienor. With this arrangement some flushing in clean solvent is obtained by the condensation of the solvent vapors on the objects.
<Desc / Clms Page number 20>
According to the invention, the degreasing, drying or cleaning and drying can, if desired, be assisted by subjecting the objects to ultrasonic radiation when they are immersed in the degreasing, drying or cleaning liquid and drying, for example as described in British Patent Application No. 13007/62 with reference to a cleaning process.
