<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

As the light source, artificial light or strong natural light is suitable; preferably, ultra-violet light as produced by low-pressure and high-pressure mercury vapor lamps, or strong light is used. solar. The irradiation preferably takes place at temperatures between 0 C and + 80 C.
In the 3,6-dioxo-A-nor-B-homo-steroids which form as reaction products and which, as ss-diketone compounds, occur for the most part in the enol form, the tetera groups or the groups protection which may be present, such as for example the ketals or the bis-methylenedioxy groups, can be removed by hydrolysis and the free hydroxy groups can be oxidized to oxo groups. Furthermore, the products of the process can, in a manner known per se, be converted into their functional ketone derivatives derived from the enokic form, as well as into metal salts.
This is how we obtain, for example by acylation, for example

by treatment with carboxylic anhydrides such as acetic anhydride or propionic anhydride, the corresponding enolic esters and which is obtained, with etherification agents, for example with alcohols or thioalcohols in the presence of acid catalysts, enolic ethers or enolic thio-6thers. By reacting the products of the process with hydrazines, cyclic hydrazoneo are formed, for example, which can also be considered as pyrazole derivatives. By reaction with salts of ouivre (II), the corresponding complexed orprifères are formed.
The # 5-3-oxo-6-acyloxy-A-nor-B-homo-steroids prepared according to the process can, by catalytic hydrogenation in a manner known per se, for example by hydrogenation in benzene or alcohol , with palladium charcoal or a palladium-barium carbonate catalyst, be converted to the corresponding saturated 3-oxo-A-nor-B-homo-steroids which are unsubstituted at the 6-position.
The 3-oxo-4O, 5Ó-oxydo-steroids and the 3-oxo-4ss, 5ss-oxydo-steroids which are used as starting materials for the present process belong preferably to the series of androstanes, préganans, cholanes, oholestanes, spirostans and oardanolides, as well as the corresponding 19-nor aerials @@, and

The process is described in more detail in the non-limiting examples which follow, in which the temperatures are indicated in degrees centigrade. The ultraviolet absorption spectra including pria in ethanolic solution and the specific rotatory powers are measured in chloroform solution in a tube 10 oenti meters in length.
The ultraviolet irradiations are carried out in a nitrogen atmosphere in a quart vessel in which the light source is centrally disposed and is cooled with water. As sources of light we get away / from low-pressure lamps NK 6/20 (monochromatic light with a wavelength of 254 mu) and high-pressure lamps
Q 81 (both from the so-called "Quarzlampen G.m.b.H. Company in Hanau).
When this is not described in more detail, the reaction mixture is treated as follows: taking it up in ether, washing the organic phase with water until neutrality and evaporation in a rotary evaporator ethereal solution previously dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. For the chromatography, and if not otherwise indicated, a thirty-fold quantity of neutral aluminum oxide of activity is used.
