<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

<Desc/Clms Page number 12>

<Desc/Clms Page number 14>

<Desc/Clms Page number 15>

<Desc/Clms Page number 22>

In its preferred embodiment, the apparatus according to the invention uses a protective film head, for projecting an image onto a reflecting surface, which is focused on a viewing screen, so that an operator can observe the image. 'projected film image ,. on a larger scale. The apparatus also includes a mircir which is movable along the line of sight, between the reflecting surface * and the vision screen, so as to interrupt the path of light and to re-flex the image downwards, on a sheet of photographic paper, thereby exposing the paper to the projected image.
Once the exposure has taken place, the mirror returns to its original position, and the exposed sheet is drawn through a developing section and then exited from the machine. A roll of light-sensitive photographic paper is stored in the apparatus, and is automatically fed to and over a paper holder panel, on which the exposure is effected.
The feeding and exposure of the paper, as well as the operation of the mirror, are controlled by means of a program mechanism controlled by a motor, the said mechanism first turning off a projection lamp and raising the mirror. A * position lowered to a position suitable for reflecting an image onto a sheet of photographic paper.
The projection lamp is then easy to operate, for a predetermined period of time, to provide a preselected light intensity, in order to expose the pictographic paper, after which the mirror is returned to its lowered position. then advance the exposed paper into a processing container, where the image is developed, and then exit the apparatus with the finished printing.

While the print is being developed, the program machine causes a predetermined length of photographic paper to be fed and cut from the feed roll, said length then being centered on the port panel. paper for another printing operation.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, there 1 has, shown in Figure 1, a Mima projector and combined printing or printing apparatus $ made in accordance with the present invention, with the various constituent elements arranged around a formwork or chamber 10. A projection head, generally designated * by 12, is mounted on top

Any suitable projection head can be used for this purpose, although the bone in this instance represents a projection head having a lamp casing 14 and, extending outwardly, axles 16 for supporting the rollers. microfilm 18 and 20. Manually operated cranks 22 and 24 are provided to advance a strip of microfilm 26 from one roll to the other.
A placteform 28 -is provided, below the casing of the lemper 14, in order to support the strip of microfilm 26 during the non-passage between the casing of the lamp and a lens 30. It is obvious that one can, if if desired, place on the aforementioned platform isolated image holders or slides or short strips of film. A variable intensity lamp system (not shown) is used, which is preferably of the condenser type. A knob 32 is provided at the top of the lamp housing 14 for adjustment of the intensity of the lamp.
The projection head 12 is. preferably rotatably mounted around the axis of the lens 30, so that

Once the paper has been exposed, the mirror is returned to its normal lowered position and the paper is advanced irons and into a developing apparatus :, generally held by 50, and which is located in front of the part. base of the formwork.
At the rear of the formwork, a roll of photographic paper 52 is contained in the light-tight compartment 54 and provided with a suitable access door (not shown). A horizontal plate 55, parallel to the paper-holder panel 42, supports the roll 52 as well as a vertical partition, forming a partition between the aforementioned compartment 54 and the interior of the formwork. The wall 56 is formed with a flange 57 extending forward, in a parallel position and spaced from the plate 55, so as to form a horizontal passage 58 for the paper 44.
Program and paper control mechanisms.
The paper is unwound from the roll 52 and fed to the paper holder panel by a paper supply mechanism which is controlled by a program mechanism, generally identified at 60 and shown in particular in Figure 13.
The 4 program mechanism is mounted inside the formwork, in front of the wall 56 and behind the fixed mirror 34, It is essentially constituted by an assembly of gears and cams mounted on a shaft 62 which, in the present completion, performs a complete revolution for each cycle of the appliance. A motor 64 (Figures 4, 6 and 13), cooled by a fan 65 and mounted on one side of the formwork, actuates the program mechanism, via a gear arrangement, which includes an engaged control gear 66. with a pinion 68 wedged on a secondary shaft 70.
This comprises a toothing 72 which meshes with a free toothed wheel 74, which in turn meshes with a main gear 76

110 and 112 are applied to the upper part of both ends of the roll 100, so as to grip the side edges of the paper.
The wheels 110 and 112 are supported by spring elements 114 and 116, attached to the formwork at 118 and 120 respectively. As we can see. Figure 3, the top of the roll 100 extends partially through a transverse slot 122, located forward of the paper holder panel 42, so that the top surface of the roll 100 is, in general, tangent. the upper surface of said paper holder panel.
At the extreme front of the developing section 50 is mounted a pair of pressure rollers *
124 and 126 in a relative position parallel so as to be elastically with each other. This * rollers are located above a removable inner bowl 128 which normally holds a certain amount of liquid for development. The aforementioned cup comprises a plurality of guide assembly,
each of which comprises a top plate 10 and a bottom plate 132 spaced slightly apart from each other and having cooperatively curved surfaces defining a passage 134 through which the exposed paper is guided into the developing liquid as well as to get out. From the cuvette, paper is fed to the nip line of rollers 124 and 126 which remove excess liquid and exit the finished print to the operator. The squeezing rollers are actuated continuously by means of an endless chain 136 mounted on one side on a toothed wheel 138, installed on the secondary shaft 70, and on the other side on a toothed wheel 140 , attached to a tree

This succession of operations is carried out by means of the `` 8) e.blafe de coamarde iateraittente, which comprises the gears 78 and 84, as well as the locking discs 80 and 81 which are associated *,
As can be seen in particular in Figure 14, the en-

stretch over an arc length of approximately 110 * and lying between the lobes 151 and 152. The notch 150 is disposed alieaexant with the toothed segment 146 of the gear 76.
Another notch 13, smaller, which can be spread over a
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
arc length of about 10 is disposed substantially opposite the large scale 150 and is in alignment with the toothed segment 148. The locking disc 81 has an outside diameter slightly smaller than the outside diameter of the ring. gear 84, to which it is subject. The disc is indented at 154 and 155, forming pairs of shoulders 156 and 157, one of which bears and slides over a shoulder corresponding to lobes 151 and 152 during each period of rest.
The notches 154 and 155 provide a clearance for the circumferential edges of each of the lobes 151 and 152 when these engage and operatively disengage, relative to the corresponding pair of shoulders 156 or 157. During the rest period shown, the pair of shoulders 156 pass along the lobe 152, effectively locking the gear 84.
The locking disc 81 is rotated to this position by meshing the toothed segment 148 with the gear 84. During the other rest period, the loba 151 passes over the pair of parliaments 157. The locking disc 81 is rotated to this latter position by the meshing of the toothed segment 146 with the gear 84.
In order to prevent jamming of the gears, when the toothed segment begins to mesh with gear 84, a tooth has been removed ± this at each point of contact where the teeth begin to mesh. As seen in Figure 14, the teeth are removed at points 160 and 162, so that the front teeth of the toothed segments 146 and 148 have unobstructed access to the adjacent tooth from the void created by each of the two removed teeth. If said teeth had not been removed in this way, it would be possible for the gears to jam when they engage, since it? has a minimal amount of play between the gears and their locking discs.

Cutting mechanism.
Referring in particular to Figures 4, 10 and 11, there is shown an illustration of a new type of cutting mechanism, for cutting the sheet of paper 44, coming from the roll 52. The cutting mechanism comprises a cutting mechanism. movable blade 164 and a fixed blade 166. The latter is disposed transversely to the path of passage of the paper, and it is mounted on a rim 166, facing downwards and located at the anterior part of the plate 55. The movable blade 164 is formed with a diagonal cutting edge 170 (FIG. 10) and the slat itself is oriented so as to form an angle, relative to the horizomatal cens, with the fixed lower blade 166 (FIG. 4).
A pair of arms 172, 174 are formed at the ends of the blade 164 and extend rearwardly, so as to be pivotally connected, with the reversing shaft 176 .
The arm 174 is a little longer than the arm 172, and *, engages with one end of a coil spring 180, under tension $ the other end of which is secured * to the formwork, at 182. to bring the blow mechanism * to the raised position (according to figure 11) and it also exerts a torque to the blade arm 174 so that the blade 164 is deflected and thus brought into pressure contact with the fixed blade 166. In order to to keep the movable laue 164 engaged with the fixed blade 166,
said movable blade comprises an extension 184 ′ applying against the fixed blade, even when the movable blade is in the raised position, according to Figures 10 and 11.
The shaft 176 fails longitudinally through an open cutting frame 186. This frame is pivotally mounted to the? an axis 188 which is supported in the formwork parallel to the shaft 176, said frame being provided with a cam roller 190 which is applied to the cam C6.
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
From the above description and with reference to Figures 11 and 12, it appears that the blade 164 remains in its raised position (Figure 11) until the lobe of the cam C6 contacts the roller. 190. When this happens, the cutting frame 186 rotates in the opposite direction.

While lowering, the blade 164 passes through a diagonal tent 192, formed between the front end of the plate 55 and the rear end of the paper holder panel 42. A chestnut brown

On the opposite side of the slot 192, the leading edge of the plate 57 is chamfered, 198, so as to release the paper from the rear of the blade 164 when the latter returns to its raised position.
There is provided, associated with the cutting mechanism, a device for maintaining the paper, preventing the latter from moving during cutting, This device comprises a sheet or end plate 200, pivotally mounted on the axis 188 and
<Desc / Clms Page number 15>
comprising a spout 202 which presses on the shaft 176 when the blade 164 is in the raised position (FIG. 11). A U-shaped spring, 204, is under tension, one end thereof being engaged with shaft 176 while the other ex- thirty is engaged with end plate 200, twisting to make - deflect it downwards.
A paper stop button 206 is attached to the bottom of the plate and is located above the supply roll 94. When the blade 164 has * lowered (Figure 12), the shaft 176 is out of $ *. contact, with the nozzle 202 and it compresses the spring 204, / causing the end plate 200 to rotate, in the reverse sets.

Meaa-aisme of elevation of the mirror the mirror 46 has been described as 4 as long as it is pivot st, on the pivot 48, <t able to move to pass from the viewing position (figure 1), in which it rests * on the paper and the paper holder panel, in a raised position,

mirror. This arm is pivotally mounted in the formwork, u atoyem an axis 212, and it is connected, for its cost, 4 a cam roller 216, by a connection 214. A coil spring <îl8 is .8. and \ 1 , under tension, to the lower part of the arm 210
<Desc / Clms Page number 16>
as well as to the shuttering, tending to bring the arm to the raised position of Figure 2. "A roller 220 is mounted at one end of the arm and moves on the side edge of the mirror frame.
When the shaft 62 is rotating, the lobe of the cam C3 firstly forces the arm 210 to remain in its lowered position (FIG. 8). However, once the pulley 216 has reached the notched section of the water @ C3, the arm is moved forward and up, under the tension of the spring 218, until it hits a stopper. mirror 222, mounted on the side of the formwork. The sxirair is then in the raised position in figure 2.
In order to avoid one. possible transmission of vibrations, from the program mechanism to the mirror, the notch of the cam 03 is shaped with a sufficient depth so that the cam roller does not bear on it while the paper is exposed.
Once the exposure has been taken, the lobe of cage 03 acts on roller 216 to lower arm 210.
The mirror 46, moving under the effect of its own weight, follows the arm in its descent, until it rests again on the paper holder panel.
The lowering of the mirror is synchronized such that the mirror edge adjacent to the pivot 48 meets the outer edge of the next, unexposed sheet of paper to insert it. Or, an upwardly flared lip.
224 (Figure 3), formed by the panel frame 194. Since photosensitive paper has a natural tendency to curl upward, there would be a possibility that the paper would jam at the entrance to passage 134, s. 'it was not supplied there in a flattened state.
Device for threading or placing the paper.
Referring to Figure 6, there is shown the device for placing the paper; serving to assist in
<Desc / Clms Page number 17>
loading and commissioning of new paper rolls.
This device comprises a paper stopper 226, of steel forming a spring, secured to one end 228 the lower face of the paper holder panel 42.: The aforementioned stopper is constituted by a finger 230, extending upwards, provided. to protrude through aligned openings 232 and 234 formed in said panel and its chasie, respectively.
A branch 236, extending downwards, engages me with a connecting member 238, itself connected to the lower extrumity of a lever 240. ± the upper end of the lever 240 is wedged to the end of a basket pin 188 which rotation of the pin rotates the lever, to lower the aforementioned finger into the openings 232 and 234, thereby removing it from the paper passage path.
When the paper resurfacing is carried out, the leading edge is inserted into the passage 58 and advanced until it abuts against the finger 230. The latter places the paper precisely relative to the supplier mechanism and it it is not necessary to do anything more * We also cycle the machine, so as to advance the first sheet of paper on the port panel * - paper.
Once the machine is comfortable underway, spindle 188 rotates enough to lower finger 230, thereby removing it from the paper path, allowing the paper to advance. Then, the finger is kept lowered by the paper passing over the opening 232 and the finger is raised only when the entire roll has passed, i.e. when the back twist of the paper has passed over the opening.

This .OUT '' '' would pivot the axis 188 and the lever 240, so as to actuate the threading mechanism, despite the action of a coil spring 244 (FIG. 6).
As seen in particular in Figure 1, the rear pressure wheel 98 is mounted in a support 246,

EMI18.3
It is observed in FIG. 13 that the axis 188 also supports a pin 250 which does not extend radially and is intended to actuate a switch 85. The function of the latter is described in detail below, in connection with the ua description

corresponding to the motor, to start the program mechanism 60, for its entire cycle. The motor circuit can be recognized from the power source, passing through switch 81 then in the closed state, conductor 254, switch 82 and conductors 274 and 272, to the motor.
Shortly after the motor has started the program mechanism cycle, camshaft 216 enters the notch of mirror cam C3, raising mirror 46 and actuating switch S3. This then assumes electrical control of the motor and switch 82 can be released.
The return circuit can then be recognized from the power source through switch 82, conductor 256, switch 83 and conductors 274 and 272, to the motor.
Once the mirror is in the raised position, the lobe of the synchronizing cam C4 actuates the switch 84 which turns on the lamp and exposes the sheet of photosensitive paper, on the paper holder panel, to the projected image. The lamp circuit can then be followed, from the power source, through the switch S1, the conductor 254, the variable rheostat 268, the conductor 266, the switch 84 and the conductor 264, to transformer 262 for lamp 252.
When the lobe of cam C4 breaks contact with switch 84, the latter returns to its initial position, thus opening the lamp circuit. Shortly thereafter, the lobe of the mirror cam C3 acts on its roller 216 to rotate the arm 210 and lower the mirror 46. At the same time, the switch S3 is returned to its normal position. However, cam C5 has then rotated enough to rotate pin 242, thereby causing pin 250 to close switch 85, thus providing a circuit for the motor.
This circuit can be

monitoring. from the power source, passing through switch 81, conductor 270 and switch 85, to the motor.
During the first part of the cycle, while the mirror is raised and the exposure is offected, the paper is not moved, because the toothless segment 150 of the intermittent control gear 78 moves on the locked gear 64. However, once the exposure is complete, the toothed segment 146 meshes with the gear 84 to rotate the rollers 94 and 100 so as to advance the sheet of paper exposed in the developing section 50 and bring a new sheet on the paper holder panel. The pressure rollers 124 and 126 rotate continuously throughout the cycle.
Rollers 94 and 100 continue to rotate until the pressure rollers grip the leading edge of the exposed sheet and the roll 100 grasps the leading edge of the new, uncut sheet.
At this moment, the toothed segment 146 of the gear 78 falls into mesh with the gear, - 84, which is then blocked when the toothless segment 152 passes over said gear 84, thereby stopping the rollers. 94 and 100.
Once the paper has stopped, the cam lobe C6 contacts the cutting mechanism, simultaneously locking and cutting the paper. After the cutting operation, toothed segment 148 of gear 78 meshes with gear 84 to advance the cut sheet a short distance, which is then centered on the paper holder panel.
Finally, the notch of cam C5 aligns with peg 242, so that peg drops out.

in the notch. This rotates axle 188 and bush 250, thereby opening switch 85 to stop the engine.
It is obvious that the invention is not limited to the exemplary embodiment described and shown above, and from which it is possible to provide other forms and other embodiments without departing from the scope. of the invention.
