<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

The present invention relates to improvements relating to reels of the type in which the body of the reel is enclosed in a sleeve of paper or other non-metallic material.
According to the present invention, such a spool comprises a body enclosed in a removable sleeve of paper or the like, the body and the sleeve comprising interlocking elements, such as protrusions and interlocking recesses or cutouts, which ensure an efficient workout connection between the body and the cuff. With such an arrangement, the sleeve is securely and securely retained to the body during use of the spool, but can be easily removed when necessary.
Various ways of carrying out the invention will now be more fully described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through a coil known as the drawing coil (
Figure 2 is a section taken on line II-II of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an elevational view, partially in section, of one end of a paper sleeve.
Figures 4-10 are partial cross-sectional views showing various means of securing a paper sleeve to a spool body.
Referring to Figures 1 to 3, the coil body comprises a single tube 1, a head cap 2 and a drive plug 3. The tube 1 may, for example, be a welded steel tube. electrical resistance, cold drawn, having a diameter of 1 3/4 inch and a wall thickness of 18 (standard English gauge) o The smooth machined ends of the tube are mounted on the bonnet 2 and on the cap 3, each of these being suitably made of a nylon molded part, the mounting which can be done by forcing in the tube and / or the fixing to the latter can be done by a casting resin making cold setting.
The top cap- 2 has the same outer diameter as the tube 1, but with a reduced part 4 at the inner end, which fits into the tube.
The chain also comprises at its internal end, a diaphragm 5 having a central hole 60 The drive plug 3 has an external diameter greater than that of the tube 1 and comprises a diaphragm 7 with a central hole 8, intermediate its sides. ends, a hub portion 9 extending inwardly from the diaphragm. On the outside of the diaphragm, the stopper has, in a known manner, internal driving elements, for example and as shown a system of plates 10 (figure 2) intended to fit together or to conform to elements. known complementary training.
Inside the diaphragm 7, the plug 3 has an internal flange 11, oriented axially, on which the tube 1 is mounted, this flange 11 being spaced ... with respect to the inside of an outer flange 12¯ , with a space sufficient to receive the paper sleeve 13 when it is ¯, slipped over the tube.
The sleeve 13 is of simple tubular shape, the internal diameter of which is substantially equal to the external diameter, of the tube 1, so that the sleeve can be slid over the cap 2 and over the tube until a its ends abut the internal end of the space between the flanges 11 and 12 of the stopper 3. Its other end then encloses practically the entire cap 2.
Sleeve can be 0.012 to 0.0180 gauge paper straight coil tube
In order to hold the sleeve 13 on the body, this sleeve has on the outside, at one end ', a number of recesses 14', for example twelve (FIG. 3), spaced equally on the circumference and capable of receiving
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
a complementary rounded projection 15, or a series of such projections, formed on the plug 3 inside the flange 12. The recesses 14 advantageously have a profile curved in the longitudinal direction of the sleeve 13 and extend from tooth up to about half the thickness of the sleeve.
These recesses allow the sleeve 13 to be pushed into place and the interlocking with the complementary protrusion 15 then holds the sleeve firmly during the winding or unwinding of threads operations. When, however, it is necessary to remove the sleeve 13 from the tube 1 for renewal purposes, the resistance offered by the interlocking can be overcome without undue strain. The light flexibility of the molded nylon plug 3 facilitates the fitting and removal of complementary elements. If desired, however, the flange 12 may be provided with longitudinal saw cuts to provide additional flexibility.
The coil is shown as being provided with an axis guide in the form of a stamped part which has a conical part 16 between a cylindrical part 17 contacting the interior of the tube 1, and another cylindrical part 18 intended to receive the axis (not shown), this guide being pushed to an intermediate point along the length of the tube.
In the arrangement illustrated in Figure 4, the tube 1 has one or more projections 19, while the sleeve 13 has a series of holes 20.
The interlocking of a protrusion 19 and a hole 2Q ensures sufficient securing between the tube and the sleeve during operation, but allows the tube to be removed when necessary. The coil can be completed with a cap 2 and a plug 3, as described above.
In Figure 5, the projection 19 or each projection is replaced by a heel 21 and, in Figure 6, by a rivet 22 whose head 23 is bevelled on one side. In the case of Figure 5, there may be no hole in the sleeve 13. The pointed end of the heel 21 makes a groove inside the tube 13. In each case, the sleeve can be slid into place without difficulty. - cultured thanks to the inclined face of the heel or the rivet head, but it is then normally retained nested by the heel point or the flat face of the rivet head.
When it is necessary to reject the sleeve, it can be removed by exerting a small force
In Figure 7, the tube 1 is fixed over a flange 111 on a plastic plug 31, as in Figure 1, but the sleeve 13 is pushed beyond this tube and extends over the outside of the plug 31 until 'to a shoulder 24.
The sleeve 13 has holes 201 thanks to which it can be fitted onto one or more projections 25 provided on the outside of the stopper 31.
The interlocking between the tube 1 and the sleeve 13 of FIG. 8 is of a rather different type. The lower end 26 of the tube has a prismatic shape, for example hexagonal as shown, and the end 27 of the sleeve 13 receives a complementary shape, for example by pressing the sleeve on the tube, while the material of this sleeve is wet and easily deformable.
The arrangement of Figure 9 is quite similar to that of Figure 7, but the lower part of the plastic plug 32 is made tapered at 28 and has a longitudinal drive rib 29 on its tapered surface. The expansion of the end of the sleeve 13, when the latter is driven out over the conical part 28 and the interlocking of the rib 29 in this sleeve, ensure a solid connection between the sleeve and the body. The coil is represented as being mounted on an axis 30 thanks to a centralization cone 31.
The plug 33 of Figure 10 differs from the plug 32 of Figure 9 in that the rib-29 is omitted. The drive socket with cone 31 is made more secure by a wedge 320

Although tube 1 is usually made of metal, it could be made of nylon or other similar plastic material.
