<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

The present invention relates to shock absorbers for cars. on rails, able to ensure better shock absorption, in comparison with the buffers known until now.
@
In particular, buffers are known in which the elastic member is constituted by a stack of rings or rubber cushions, and buffers are also known in which the shock absorption is effected by the action of rings. or expandable metal segments, working in friction between them or on the walls of the tubular box of the tampono The first are generally pre-
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
since they have a more progressive pattern - soft at the beginning and stiffening thereafter and the damping is viscous in proportion to the speed of the shock., The latter however have the advantage of being able to absorb and dissipate in heat much greater amounts of energy.
The present invention combines the two systems by taking advantage of the high flexibility and viscous damping of rubber, and the absorption of energy by friction, while respecting a division between the functions, in the sense that for small shocks, only the rubber works, while friction only intervenes for shocks of greater importance.
According to its more general characteristic, the buffer, according to the present invention, comprises a shock absorber with expandable metal rings, arranged in series with a rubber spring and adjusted so as to come into operation after a certain amount of work (and a corresponding distance traveled. ).
According to another feature, the expansion of the metal rings is thwarted and regulated by another appropriately calibrated spring.
According to yet another feature, the rubber spring consists of a stack of rubber cushions separated from one another by metal centering discs.
The invention will be described in more detail below with reference to the accompanying drawing, which shows the buffer in axial section.
In the drawing, 1 denotes a tubular box having a transverse support plate 2 by means of which the box can be bolted to the frame of a horse car.

min by rail or tram.
In laboite 1 a tubular section 3 slides telesoopically, the end of which is in the form of a mushroom or a disc 4. The tubular section has two notches 5, 6 diametrically opposed, which are crossed by a pin 7 also passing through two diametrically opposed holes in the tubular box 1 and the accidental fall of which is prevented by a pin 8.
The inner end of the tubular section is closed by a bottom 2 carrying a central bore 10. The cracks 5-6 extend towards the mushroom 4 starting from the bottom.
Between the bottom 9 and the support plate 2, are contained in the tubular box 1, the shock absorbing means, the said means comprising - as said above - a metal ring shock absorber arranged in series with a spring encaouchouc. More exactly, these means comprise two discs 11, 12 drilled in the center and whose peripheral surfaces converge conically in the direction from one disc to the other. The two discs are axially spaced from each other by means of an antagonist spring constituted by a ring or by rather rigid rubber cleats 13, while at their periphery, the discs are encircled by an expandable metal ring 14.
Against the disc 11 rests a stack of rubber cushions 15 held in an axially aligned position by separators 16 in the form of metal discs pierced in the center and provided - in a known manner - with circular ribs 17 which penetrate into the disc. the cushions 15 and keep them centered. The last cushion in the stack, designated 15a, rests against a metal disc 18 pierced in the center and provided with a circular groove into which the material of the cushion penetrates, keeping it aligned with the disc 18, which is at his turn leaning against
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
the support plate 2.
The cushions 15, 15a are made of rubber which is softer than that which constitutes the ring.
A tie rod 19 axially crosses the complete damping group and thanks to this the group can be assembled and undone in its entirety, without the constituent elements being able to detach themselves from one another. It should be observed that .. the buffer being in a condition of complete extension - as visible in the drawing-the longitudinal space between the bottom and the 1st plate 2 is shorter than the total axial length of the group, measured from the anterior surface of the disc 12 to the rear face of the disc 18, and consequently the group is already precompressed from the start.
The stack of cushions 15 is made so as to have a greater total flexibility than that of the magnet 12, so that it absorbs small impacts without involving the frictional action between the extensible ring 14 and the inner surface of the tubular box 1.
On the contrary, beyond a certain impact energy, a phase is reached in which the ring 13 is also compressed axially, and consequently the expandable ring is widened and applied against the tubular box 1 while the mushroom 4 with its tubular section 1 and the bottom 9 move towards the support plate 2 and cause the extensible ring 14 along the tubular box 1. The friction action which derives from it then adds to the elastic reaction of the cushions 15 by producing a strong increase in energy absorption and therefore a powerful damping effect.
Although the counter spring 13 has been shown as a simple rubber ring
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
relatively stiff, it is understood that this spring may have the shape of the spring 15-16, consisting of a stack of cushions with separator discs, each separator disc obviously reducing the axial elasticity of such a spring in addition. thus adjusting the form coefficient of the same spring and, by modifying the response characteristic of the shock absorber group.,
It is also possible to make other modifications without departing from the scope of the present invention.
