<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
102 (fig.
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

The present invention relates to an apparatus for milling threads intended for the manufacture of spindles on lathes, in which a hollow shaft is provided which surrounds the spindle to be machined, which carries the milling tool (s) and which is driven at high speed. speed relative to the slowly rotating spindle. In the known embodiments of this type, the milling head constituted by the hollow shaft and the milling tools, is mounted in a foot placed on the lathe support and is rotated using a trapezoidal belt.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
by a motor also placed on the support. Devices of this kind take up a lot of space. An adaptation to the height between centers of the lathe is not provided for.
The tools themselves are cooled only by air, since it is not possible in the cooling by liquid that the latter is projected on the V-belt by reducing the friction of the latter and causing it to slip, thus so that it can no longer transmit the required high torque to the milling head. Milling tools can seize, break and render the partially machined spindle unusable.
The invention eliminates all these drawbacks due to the fact that the hollow shaft serving as a support for the milling tool (s) forms part of the rotor and the casing of the apparatus forms part of the stator of an electric motor, the speed of which is advantageously adjustable and which is preferably a polarity switching motor. The rotor plate pack is threaded onto the hollow shaft which is supported in ball bearings in the housing and on the front of which is the tool holder. Appropriate liquid cooling through channels, which are formed in the casing and whose outlet opens into projection nozzles directed towards the tool holder, ensures that the apparatus can work at high speeds and ensures a Long lasting strength to tool cutting edges.
The machining speed is considerably higher than in the known thread milling apparatus mentioned above, due to the liquid cooling made possible by the invention.
According to a particularly advantageous embodiment of the invention, the tool holder consists of two or more parts and can be removed from the hollow shaft, while leaving the spindle inside the latter.
The whole device can be adjusted to the height between centers of each case of the lathe and to the desired pitch of the thread

by a suitable support device for the motor carrying the hollow shaft with the tools.
An embodiment of the object of the invention is shown, by way of non-limiting example, in the accompanying drawings.
Fig. 1 is an axial section of the motor and of the hollow shaft according to a first embodiment of the invention comprising an undivided tool holder.
Fig. 2 is an axial section of an exemplary preferred embodiment comprising a divided tool holder.
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the split tool holder.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation, partly in section taken along line A-B of FIG. 5, a suitable engine support device.
Fig. 5 is a partial plan and a partial section taken along the line C-D of FIG. 4.
Fig. 6 is a partial rear view of the support frame and a partial section taken along line E-F of FIG. 4.
Fig. 7 is a plan of the base plate to be fixed on the support.
In fig. 1, the rotating part of the apparatus consists of the hollow shaft 1 on which the tool holder 2 comprising the tools 3 is fixed by screwing. The hollow shaft l carries the package, of sheets 4 of the rotor of the electric motor and is supported by ball bearings 5. These ball bearings 5 are protected outwards against the ingress of cooling water, etc. .by sealing rings 6.
The ball bearings 5 are placed in the housing 7 which serves as a housing for the sheet metal pack 8 and the stator winding 9 of the electric motor. A cooling channel is hollowed out along a helical line at the periphery of the casing 10 of the housing 7 and has
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
an inlet opening 11, as well as an outlet opening 12, into each of which is screwed a small connecting tube
13 or 14, the tube 13 serving to connect the supply duct
15 of the cooling liquid, while a duct 16, which opens into a projection nozzle 17 directed towards the milling tools 3, is threaded onto the second tube 14.
The housing 7 comprises at the front a projecting ring 18 on which is fixed, by means of screws, an artificial glass plate 19. The duct 16 passes through an opening 20 of the artificial glass plate and is fixed. on this plate in the opening 20 in a suitable manner, for example by clamping.
15a designates two pivots arranged on the opposite sides of the caster of the actor, with the aid of which the latter is carried by the support device shown at rods 4 to 7.
With the milling apparatus according to the invention, it is possible to manufacture spindles having any pitch at a high cutting speed up to a diameter dependent on the hollow shaft. The device takes up very little space.
The cutting operation can be observed at any time through the artificial glass plate.
Since the electric motor can be set at different speeds, the rotational speed of the apparatus and hence the cutting speed can be adapted to the diameter and material of the spindle to be machined. The electric motor is so powerful that the thread can be cut to its full depth in one working pass.
In the exemplary embodiment according to FIG. 1, the tool holder is constituted, as in the known thread milling devices comprising a driven hollow shaft surrounding the spindle to be machined and carrying the tool holder, by an undivided ring fixed to the hollow shaft. To change the tool holder, the spindle must first be removed from the hollow shaft, as in known devices, by moving the latter back with the tool holder up to the top of the tailstock and
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
then loosening the spindle.
When it is necessary to change the tool holder during the machining of a spindle because the tools have become dull, it is obviously not possible in this case, after replacing the tool holder with another holder tools having sharp tools, to bring the spindle and the tools in exactly the same relative position as before, and as a result, during the further machining of the spindle, a defect is formed at the point where the machining had been interrupted.
The solution used until now was to replace during the machining operation only the tools, when they were dull, leaving the tool holder in position, then to perform the precise adjustment of the new tools in the holder. tools using optical instruments.
This is, however, extremely time-consuming, especially when the tool holder has several tools to be replaced, as in the case of a percussion milling machine working with several tools.
These drawbacks are eliminated in the exemplary embodiment according to FIGS. 2 and 3.
In these figures, the elements 1 to 15 correspond to those described with the aid of FIG. 1. However, the tool holder 2 is not fixed here directly by screwing on the hollow shaft, but using screws 22 on a retaining ring 21 screwed on the front end of the hollow shaft 1 The tool holder 2 is formed by the two halves 2a and 2b (Fig. 3) and is divided along line 23. The tool holder has an annularly extending collar 24 which engages an annular groove. of the retaining ring 21, with a view to relieving the fixing screws 22. The shearing forces produced by the centrifugal force are therefore absorbed by the collar 24 which consequently relieves the screws 22 of these shearing forces.
The tools 3 are engaged in the grooves of the tool holder and are held in these grooves by retaining pieces
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
cuneiforms 25 which are pressed against the tools by screws.
26 designates the spindle to be machined which is rotated during its machining at a very low speed, while the tool holder rotates at a high speed, so that all the tools successively come into action.
When the tools become dull during the machining of a spindle, the tool holder is removed by loosening the screws 22 of the retaining ring 21 and is replaced by another tool holder which has been prepared in the meantime. The tools in the tool holder are adjusted outside the machine, for example using a jig 27.
In these embodiments, the tool holder can therefore be removed, leaving the hollow shaft and the spindle in place, and can be replaced by another tool holder whose tools have already been precisely adjusted to the correct position on the holder. -tools, for example using a template.
The retaining ring, which remains on the hollow shaft when replacing the tool holder and to which the latter is secured with several screws, helps ensure that the newly fitted tool holder comes precisely in the same position relative to the hollow shaft as the removed toolholder.
The cover 19 of artificial glass is formed, according to FIG. 2, by a cover threaded onto the housing 7 of the motor and held there in the manner of a bayonet closure with the aid of a slot, which is formed on the edge of the housing starting first of all from this edge in the axial direction of the motor and then extending perpendicularly to this direction and in which engage fingers 28 fixed in the motor housing.
The support device shown in FIGS. 4 to 7.
The base plate 101 (fig. 7) has four buttonholes 103 through which the screws are passed.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
102 (fig. 4 and 6) engaging with their head in grooves of the support 129 (fig. 5) which slides in a known manner in guides 131, 132 of the lathe and which can move longitudinally with the aid of the spindle 130. The base plate further comprises guides 104 forming circular segments and cutouts 105 for guiding and fixing the support frame 107 on the base plate. These parts can be secured to each other using screws 106 after the desired angular adjustment of the support frame relative to the base plate.
A shaft 108 coupled with a flywheel 109 is supported at. the upper part of the support frame carries, mounted on it two worms 110 and 111 which each mesh with a helical wheel 112, one of which drives the spindle 113 and the other the spindle 114. A nut is each time mounted on pins 113 and 114, a single nut 115 being shown in FIGS. 4 and 5. The nut 115 is in the form of a two-part socket which is accommodated in a sleeve 116 also in two parts and which is screwed therewith. The sleeve 116 with the nut 115 is carried by a support 118 provided with two arms 119 and 120 and intended for the polarity switching motor 7 carrying the hollow shaft with the tools 3.
The connecting pieces 117 between the sleeve 116 and the support member 118 pass through the rear wall of the support frame, which is perforated at this point so that this support member 118 can be raised and lowered on the frame. during the rotation of the pins 113, 114. The pitch of the pins 113, 114 and the worms 110, 111, as well as the corresponding helical wheels, is calculated so that the whole of this mechanism is self-locking.
The support 118 is guided in a dovetail guide provided on the rear wall of the frame. Dovetail guides 121 and 122 are screwed to the rear wall
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
frame and can be removed after loosening the screws, so that after their removal and the separation of the sleeve 116 and the nut 115 into two parts the support 118 can be separated from the frame in a direction perpendicular to the axes of the pins 113, 114.
A sufficiently large opening 124 or 123 is provided between the pins 113, 114 both in the support 118, and also in the frame 107 and the machine spindle 26, which is surrounded by the hollow shaft of the polarity-switched motor 7. , protrudes through these openings during machining. The entire suspension device can therefore be moved on the lathe in the direction of the axis of the spindle 26 which is carried, on the one hand, by the centering point of the tailstock 128 and, on the other hand, by the plate, not shown, then set in rotation by the latter at low speed.
The polarity-switching motor 7 is engaged with the pivots 15a arranged on both sides of its housing in the openings 127 formed in the two arms 119 and 120 of the support 118. The front end 125 of the support arms 119 and 120 is divided. and is formed as a clamping member. The pivots of the polarity-switched motor are tightened by tightening screw 126, after this motor has been returned to the desired position by pivoting about a horizontal axis.
Various modifications can moreover be made to the embodiment, shown and described in detail, without departing from the scope of the invention.
