<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc / Clms Page number 1>
The present invention relates to a front mechanical mower comprising a knife and a counterweight moved in a reciprocal reciprocating movement.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Front-mounted mechanical mowers have already been built, intended to be mounted on a tractor, generally single-axis, which controls the back and forth movement of the mower knife. The knife drive mechanism is located either in the vertical median plane of the mower, in the case of so-called "central" mowers, or at one end of the knife, in portal mowers. The latter have the advantage of forming, by working, only one seud an-. dain.
One of the drawbacks of these mowers, which is particularly noticeable in IC gantry mowers, is the excessive vibrations of the machine which produce its rapid destruction and tire the operator. These vibrations are above all due to the fact that the oscillations of the knife are not balanced. Manufacturers have tried to remedy this drawback by making the machine heavier to increase its inertia, which makes it more expensive, by reducing the frequency of oscillation of the knife, which is detrimental to the cut, or finally by providing the knife with a counterweight. , which only partially solves the problem, the drive mechanism of the knife and its counterweight itself not being balanced.
The aim of the present invention is to remedy this lack of balancing without, however, producing the drawbacks mentioned above.
The mower according to the invention is characterized by the fact that the knife and the counterweight are driven by two independent mechanisms each controlled by a crank, the two cranks being arranged at 180 degrees from each other, all for the purpose of balancing both the knife and its drive mechanism.

The appended drawing represents, by way of example, one embodiment of the object of the invention and two variants.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a mower mounted on a single-axle tractor.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of this mower, on a larger scale.
Fig. 3 is a section through a detail of this mower, on an enlarged scale.
Fig. 4 is a section taken along line IV-IV of FIG. 3.
Fig. 5 is a section of another detail.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view of a detail taken along the line VI-VI of FIG. 2, on a larger scale.
Fig. 7 is a plan view of a variant, some parts being cut away, and,
Fig. 8 is a plan view, similar to that of FIG. 7, of another variant.
The mower shown in fig. 1 to 6 comprises a tubular gantry 1 having two uprights 1a and 1b and a transverse part 1a; - a frontal comb
2 is disposed between the ends of the uprights 1a and 1b.
This mower is fixed, by the middle of the cross member, to a single-axis tractor 3 (fig. 1) controlling the back and forth movements of a knife 4. The gantry also carries two swath boards 5 intended for push the cut grass to the center of the machine to form a single swath.
The crossmember 1c carries, fixed by a collar 6, a casing 7 enclosing the force-taking mechanism (fig. 6). This
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
housing has a flange 7a by means of which the mower is fixed to the tractor. A shaft 8 rotates in bearings 9 and 10 housed in the housing 7; this shaft carries, at one of its ends, a dog clutch 11, with which the tractor PTO shaft cooperates and, at its other end, a grooved pulley 12.
The upright 1b of the gantry, fixed by a collar 13 (Fig. 2), 'an oil bath casing 14 in which is rotatably mounted, by means of bearings 15, a shaft 16 (Fig. 3 and 4). This shaft carries, at its end situated outside the casing 14, a grooved pulley 17, driven by the pulley 12 by means of belts 18 held in tension by a tensioner 19. At its other end, the shaft 16 carries a flywheel 20 to which is fixed, eccentrically, the crank pin 21 of a crank. An oval plate 22 is fixed to the end of the crankpin 21 and itself carries the crankpin 23 of a second @ crank; crankpins 21 and 23 are located 1800 from each other and are equidistant from the axis of shaft 16.
The crank pin 21 is connected by a connecting rod 24 to a lever 25 fixed to the end of a tubular shaft 26 disposed along the post lb of the gantry; the crank pin 23 is itself connected, by a connecting rod 27, to a lever 28 fixed to the end of a tubular shaft 29 coaxial with the shaft 26. During the rotation of the shaft 16, driven by the tractor , the. shafts 26 and 29 are driven by a reciprocal oscillating movement. The shaft 26 carries, at its other end, a lever 30 (FIG. 5) at the end of which is fixed a finger 31 penetrating into a slide,
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
not shown, the knife 4.
The oscillating movements of the shaft 26 thus produce a back and forth movement of the knife; the end of the shaft 29 carries a lever 32 to which is fixed a counterweight 33, in the form of a crown will be coaxial with the shafts 26 and 29 (fig. 1), driven by an oscillating movement opposite to that of the knife and ensuring balancing the latter. It should be noted that the control mechanisms of the knife and the counterweight, from the cranks 21 and 23, balance each other.
The shafts 26 and 29 are traversed by an elastic bar 34 (fig. 3 and 5), fixed at one of its ends 34a to the shaft 26 and, at its other end 345, to the shaft 29 by means of 'a flange 35. During the reciprocal oscillating movements of the shafts 26 and 29, the bar 34 is subjected to torsional forces in such a way that it resiliently dampens the effects of inertia of the knife and of its counterweight.
This elastic device thus makes it possible to reduce the weight of the flywheel 20; in addition, placed between the lever actuating the counterweight and the lever actuating the knife, this device has the advantage of establishing a direct connection between these two-parts animated by a reciprocal movement, and consequently of reducing the various forces. mechanics which act on the transmission organs which unite these two parts to the governor. It should be noted that the latter could be arranged in the center of the mower, on the PTO shaft 8.
In the variant of FIG. 7, the mower's PTO shaft is designated 36; he wears-

te a crank. two crank pins 37 and 38, of the same eccentricity, and arranged at 1800 relative to each other, the crank pin 37 is connected, by a connecting rod 39, to a lever 40 articulated on a journal 41 carried by the upright 42a of the gantry 42 of the mower. The lever 40 carries a counterweight 43 for the knife which is designated by 44.
The latter is driven by a lever 45 articulated on a journal. 46 fixed to the amount 42b of the gantry; this lever 45 is connected, by a connecting rod 47, to the crank pin 38. The journals 41 and 46 are perpendicular to the plane of the gantry so that the levers 40 and 45 move in a plane parallel to that of the gantry. The body 44 is balanced by the counterweight 43 and its drive mechanism 38, 47 and 45 is balanced by the drive mechanism of the counterweight 37, 39 and 40.
Finally, in the variant of FIG. 8, the drive mechanisms of the counterweight and the knife are similar to those of FIG. 7, -but both arranged on the same side of the mower: a lever 48, corresponding to the lever 40 of the variant of FIG. 7 and carrying the counterweight, designated by 49, is superimposed on the lever 45; two levers revolve around a pin 50, carried by the post 42b of the gantry, 'and which is. perpendicular to the plane of the latter. The lever 48 is connected, by a connecting rod 51, to the crank 37 and the lever 45 is connected to the crank 38 by the connecting rod 47.
In this variant, the weights are less well distributed than
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
in that of FIG. 7, on the other hand the gantry is not subjected to stresses tending alternately to bring the uprights of the gantry closer to and away from each other, as is the case in the variant of FIG. 7.
The present invention could also be applied to so-called "central" mowers.
