<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

The present invention relates to improvements made to roof ventilation shutters for coaches and similar vehicles.
A ventilation flap of known shape comprises a panel fitting onto a rectangular opening in the roof of the vehicle, the panel being articulated at its front edge and being provided, at its rear edge, with a device which makes it possible to lift this edge. so as to bring the panel into an inclined position for ventilation o The panel may be opaque or consist of a frame carrying a transparent pane of glass or plastic o
According to the present invention, a roof ventilation flap for a coach or the like, arranged to cover an opening in the roof, is connected, at its front and rear ends, to the roof,
by a rod system of such shape that each end of the shutter can be lifted while the shutter pivots around the other end which is positively located so as to prevent any movement of this end other than a purely angular movement.
Thus, the front edge of the fan can be lifted so that, when the vehicle is in motion, the fresh air is directed towards the interior of the vehicle; or again, the rear edge can be raised, so that the flap behaves as a suction fan and sucks the stale air from the vehicle.
The rod system is preferably arranged so that the front and rear edges of the shutter can be lifted simultaneously or successively to bring the shutter to a position where it is above the roof and parallel to the latter, a device being provided. to lock the shutter rigidly in this position and prevent any forward and backward movement under the effect of acceleration and deceleration forces.
It is advantageous that the ventilation shutter comprises an open metal frame, in which is mounted a panel which can be of metal sheet, plywood or another opaque material, or else of a transparent or translucent plastic for provide roof lighting.
In the closed position, the shutter is arranged to fit over a raised lip or flange which extends around the roof opening and prevents water from entering the opening, and the edge. The peripheral part of the shutter frame may bear a downwardly projecting seal of rubber or other flexible material, arranged so as to rest on the surface of the roof, around the cover, when the shutter is closed.
A practical form of roof ventilation shutter according to the present invention is shown, by way of example, in the accompanying drawings.

Figure 1, 10 is a double decker coach in the roof of which are mounted in line three identical ventilation flaps 11, 12, 13, according to the present invention.
Each shutter fits over a rectangular opening in the roof and can take three possible open positions. The front flap 11 is shown with its front edge raised, so that, when the vehicle is in motion, the fresh air is directed towards the interior of the vehicle. The central flap 12 is shown in its fully raised position in which it is above the roof and parallel to the latter and air can flow under the flap and pass into and out of the vehicle. whether the vehicle is moving or stationary.
The rear flap 13 is shown with its rear edge raised so that it behaves as a suction fan which sucks the stale air from the vehicle.
It should be noted that each of the shutters can be placed in any of the open positions shown,
Reference is now made to the constructional details of the shutter, shown by the other figures of the drawings; the shutter comprises a panel 14 mounted in an open rectangular metal frame 15. The panel may be of metal or plywood, but it is preferably made of transparent or translucent plastic, which may be tinted. To mount the panel in the frame, its edge is accommodated in a groove of the inner face of a rubber molding 16 and the inner edge of the frame 15 is housed in a groove of the outer face of the molding.
The frame has an angle section, as shown more particularly in Figures 5, 6 and 8 and is preferably obtained by extrusion of a light alloy. The lower edge of the vertical frame flange is spaced from the roof of the vehicle and has a recess for receiving a flexible rubber gasket 17, which is applied to the surface of the roof 18 in the closed position of the shutter, like the show figures 5 and 60
The spacing between the lower edge of the frame and the roof allows for the small downward movement of the end member from one end of the frame when the other end is lifted, while the trim 17 keeps the seal between the frame and the roof at the end that is not lifted.
The internal dimensions of the shutter frame are slightly larger than those of the roof opening and, in the closed position, the shutter covers a raised flange 19 which is attached to the roof around the opening and prevents 1- ' water is forced along the roof surface, into the opening, when the shutter is open.
At each end of the shutter are mounted, on the underside of the frame, two brackets 20, spaced apart, parallel and extending inwardly, rigidly fixed to the frame by bolts 21. Rods 22, mounted to pivot at 23 on the inner ends of the brackets 20, are articulated, at their free ends, on the free ends of rods 24 which are mounted to pivot at 25 on bent flanges located at the opposite ends of a bracket 26 fixed to the wall of the opening -

roof girth.
The joints between the rods 22 and 24 are formed by pin portions 27 of plugs 28 secured in the ends of a cylindrical tubular bar 29 forming a handle and extending horizontally between the two pairs of rods, the plugs being brazed or otherwise secured to the inner faces of the rods 22 and the pin portions being slidably mounted in openings provided in the rods 240 Discs 30 of fiber or other friction material are located on the pins 26, between each pair of rods, and a rod 31 extends axially through the pins and the handle.
One end of the rod is fixed in a plate 32 fixed to one of the rods 22 and the other end of the rod extends through the other rod 22 and is threaded to receive a nut 33 comprising a handle 34 which allows rotate it. Thus, by tightening the nut 33, the joints between the rods of each pair are frictionally locked to hold the rods in different relative angular positions.
Each pair of rods 22 and 24 forms a knee and, in ':: The closed position of the shutter, as shown in Figure 5 and, in solid lines, Figure 4, the two rods extend substantially vertically downward. from their pivots, and a pin 35 carried by the rod 24, engaging with the end of the applique 25, locates the rods in a position such as a plane containing the axis of rotation 23 of the rod 22 and the axis of the bar 29 forming the handle is located closer to the end of the roof opening, than the axis 25 around which the rod 24 pivots on the bracket 26, so that the knee formed by the rods is blocked.
In this position, the shutter is: locked, so that it cannot perform forward and backward movements, due to the engagement of the ankles 36 of the appliques 20 with the notches 37 of the appliques 26.
To release and lift one of the ends of the shutter, the corresponding handle 29 is grabbed and pulled away from the end adjacent to the opening to release the knee formed by the rods; it is then rotated upwards to an angle rather greater than 1800, so that the rods 24 extend upward from their fixed pivots of the brackets 26 and the rods 22 extend upward from the handle, as shown in dotted lines in Figure 4. A stop of the rod system in this arrangement is formed by the engagement of the rods 24 with the pins 36 of the appliques 20.
At the other end, the flap simply moves angularly around the pivot pins 23 of the rods, serving as hinges, any forward and backward movement of this end of the flight and being prevented by the engagement of the pegs. tt with the notches 37 which are of sufficient depth to allow the small angular movement of the shutter which occurs when the other end is lifted o If it is desired to open any end of the shutter to a lesser extent than full coverage shown in dotted lines, Figure 4, the handle is moved to the desired angle, and then the joint between the rods is locked by tightening the nut 33 by means of the handle 34. Figures 7 and 8 show one end of the shutter in a closed position. partially open position.
To open the two ends of the shutter and bring it as a whole into the raised position shown in figure 2, the two ends of the shutter are lifted simultaneously or successively by means of the handles.
To locate the shutter so as to prevent it from moving back and forth when it is in this position,
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
use is made of the devices shown in Figures 2, 4 and 6. Two brackets 40 are mounted on one side, or each side of the roof opening at equal distances from the front and rear ends. Struts or rods 41, inclined = - = in opposite directions, are articulated at one end on the appliques 40 and at their other ends, on members 42, capable of sliding in aligned slots 43 of limited length, provided in a vertical flange of an angled bracket 44 fixed to the side member of the frame 15 and projecting downwards.
The length of the slots 43 and the rods 41 is such as when the shutter has been fully raised. the sliding members 42 are supported at the ends of the slots, as shown in dotted lines in FIG. 4, so that the props effectively locate the shutter so as to prevent it from moving longitudinally in both directions. At the same time, the rods do not affect the movement of the shutter when it is lifted at one end only.
In the closed position of the shutter, the rods 43 are placed between the descending flange of the shutter frame and the raised flange 19 which surrounds the opening, so that they are hidden from view.
In case the vehicle roof is flat the shutter frame and panel are flat, but in the case where the roof is transversely curved, as is common, the ventilation flap is transversely curved at the same radius as the roof , as in the example shown in the drawings.
CLAIMS.
1.- Roof ventilation shutter for a coach or similar vehicle, arranged so as to cover an opening in the roof and connected, at its front and rear ends, to the roof, by a rod system of such shape that each end of the shutter can be lifted while the shutter pivots around the other end which is positively located so as to prevent any movement of that end other than purely angular movement.
2.- Roof ventilation flap for a coach or similar vehicle, in which each of the front and rear ends of the flap is connected to the corresponding end of an opening in the roof of the vehicle by a kneeling rod system with reversal which, in one position. locks the shutter in the closed position and which, when overturned, lifts the end of the shutter so that it takes a position away from the roof and holds it there, the shutter pivoting around the joints of the system rods at either end when the other end is up.
