<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
On arrête l'extrémité
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

The present invention relates to a method of sampling a heap of loose solid material, in which a core of material is taken over the entire height of the heap by inserting therein a hollow probe formed. of two longitudinal parts which are guided with respect to each other over the entire length of the probe and the latter is then withdrawn at the same time as the material it contains.
It has been proposed to take a core of loose material out of a heap by inserting therein a probe of circular section made up of two longitudinal halves, one of which has two radial edges engaged in a groove formed outwards. by folding the edges of the other half and serving as a guide for the edges of the first half To take the desired carrot,
the two halves are pressed simultaneously into the pile of material to be sampled. During the driving in, the material penetrates into the guides and quickly gets stuck between them and the edges which are engaged therein so that the driving in by hand can only rarely be carried out beyond 1.8 meters. when the material to be sampled is coal.
It should be noted that the resistance to sinking also results from the settling of the material in the lower part of the probe and of the resulting plug. When sinking by hand is no longer possible, - it can also be continued by threshing with the aid of a sledgehammer, but in this case the particle size of the sample taken is modified, following the cutting of the grains of material by the lower end.
The present invention relates to a method which does not have these drawbacks ,,
To this end, in the method according to the invention, one of the aforesaid longitudinal parts of the probe is pushed down to the base of the pile to be sampled, the other longitudinal part of the probe is then pushed in to a small distance from the background,
the first part is withdrawn until its lower end is at the level of that of the other part and then the two parts are pushed simultaneously to the bottom, having to remove them simultaneously from the taso
The successive insertion of the two longitudinal parts of the probe prevents the formation, at the base of the core, of a plug which would prevent reaching the bottom of the heap by acting by hand. However, as a plug is useful for removing the marl core while the probe, we stop the depression of the second part a few centimeters from the bottom and we bring the first to its level so as to be able to form a small plug by them. then pressing simultaneously.
When the material to be sampled is very dry and has little cohesion, the formation of this small plug can be encouraged by wetting the core of the core before removing the probe.
In order to easily carry out the method according to the invention, it is advantageous to use a probe comprising two longitudinal parts guided with respect to each other and one of which extends over more than half of the length. periphery and covers the outside of the other longitudi- nal part, along two bands of the latter which serve to delimit the core of material to be taken and which converge towards the middle part of this other part, the covering of these converging bands being performed over a maximum width of 1.5 centimeters.
The two parts of the probe which overlap in the manner indicated guide the second half with respect to the first during its insertion without causing a significant jamming of the material between these two parts.
Preferably, the longitudinal part covered by the other exceeds half of the periphery, along each edge, at most one centimeter beyond said half.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
By the fact that it exceeds half of the periphery, the longitudinal part covered by the other subtracts the material from being driven by the latter when the latter is inserted in the second place and, consequently, the risks of clogging is reduced.
If, however, the part engaged inside the other extended more than a centimeter beyond, half of, the periphery of the probe, along each of its edges, it would risk form a plug itself while it is driven into the material before the other
According to another feature of the probe according to the invention, one of its longitudinal parts, preferably that partially covered by the other, is provided with a duct which communicates with the interior of the probe at the end. lower end thereof and which abuts at the opposite end of said part.
This probe makes it possible to easily wet, if necessary, the lower end of the core before the simultaneous withdrawal of the two aforementioned longitudinal parts. We can therefore still get a plug at the bottom of the core even when the pile of material to be sampled is very dry.
This duct increases the rigidity of the part to which it is fixed When it is fixed on the part partially engaged in the other, it therefore reduces the risks of deviation of this part while it is inserted first in the pile and therefore the risks of the second longitudinal part jamming during its insertion are also less.
Other features and details of the invention will become apparent from the description of the drawings appended hereto, which represent schematically, and by way of example only, one embodiment of the probe according to invention.,
Figure 1 is an elevational view of the probe according to the invention
Figure 2 is, on a larger scale, a cross section through the body of this probe, this section being made at the level indicated by line II-II in Figure 3
Figure 3 is, to the same scale as Figure 2, a longitudinal section through the lower end of the body of the probe according to the invention.
In these different figures, the same reference notations designate identical elements.
The body of the probe shown in the drawings comprises two longitudinal parts 2 and 3 guided with respect to each other. Part 2 extends over more than half of the periphery of the body and covers the exterior of the part. 3 along two bands of the latter included between longitudinal sections 4 and 5 as well as 6 and 7. Sections 4 and 6 are diametrically opposed o The inner faces of these two bands serve to delimit the core of material to be sampled o converge towards the middle part of the longitudinal part 3 to which they belong. The maximum overlap of the aforementioned two bands by the longitudinal part 2 is carried out over a maximum width of 1.5 centimeters.
The longitudinal part 3 has, beyond the sections 4 and 6, two bands such as those delimited by the longitudinal sections 4 and 8, on the one hand, 6 and 9, on the other hand, These last two bands have a width maximum of 1 centimeter
In order to use this probe, the longitudinal part 30 is first driven into the pile of material to be sampled. The insertion is carried out to the bottom of the taso. The longitudinal part 2 is then pushed in. The part 3 serves as a guide during this insertion.
We stop the end
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
lower end of part 2 at a small distance from the bottom of the pile, which can be easily controlled by the relative position of the upper end of part 2 to that of part 3., This small distance is chosen for example equal to 5 centimeter Se
During the recess of part 2, the material between parts 2 and 3 does not form a compact plug at the lower end of part 2 because the contact surface of the latter with this material is insufficient ,, D 'somewhere else,
the material to be sampled is not carried over a great width between parts 2 and 3 so that the driving-in can be carried out easily by hand even over a height of several meters.
The penetration of the material to be sampled between the parts
2 and 3 is further reduced by the absence of substantial clearance between these parts along their lower edge, for example; over a height of 30 to 50 centimeters o Outside the zone thus delimited, it is advantageous to provide a some play between the overlapping parts, in order to facilitate the insertion of the second part 2 despite small deviations from the first part 30 A play of about 1/2 millimeter between the overlapping parts is perfectly suitable in this buto
When part 2 has been pushed in a few centimeters from the base of the pile,
part 3 is withdrawn until its lower end is at the lower level of that of part 20. The two parts 2 and 3 are then pushed simultaneously to the bottom of the taso This last maneuver has the effect of promoting the formation of a small plug at the end of the probe. The two parts are then removed simultaneously.
By moving them away from each other after leaving the heap to be sampled, it is easy to see the constitution of the latter at each of the levels which have been crossed by the probe.
On the longitudinal part 3 is fixed a duct 10 which communicates with the interior of the probe at the lower end thereof and which terminates at the upper end of said part. This duct is located at the bottom. outside of it It is formed by a sheet which is connected tangentially to part 3 and to which it is fixed by weld seams 11.
The lower end of the conduit 10 is closed by a plug 12, which in longitudinal section has the shape of a bevel 13 (Figures 1 and 3). This plug is, for example, removably fixed using a screw 14. Communication between the lower end of duct 10 and the interior of the probe is established by an opening 15.
At its upper end, the duct 10 opens into a hollow handle 16 which serves to facilitate the insertion of part 3 into the pile to be sampled. The longitudinal part 2 is also provided with a handle 170 The handle 16 pre - feels an opening 18 through which water can be poured into the duct 10 when it is desired to wet the lower end of the core of material contained in the probe, after the two parts of the latter have been pushed in until at the bottom of the taso
The end of the handle 16, opposite to that where the opening 18 is made, is closed by a shutter plate 19 so that the interior of this handle can retain a certain additional quantity of water intended to gradually wet the handle. lower end of the core contained in the probe.
By virtue of this wetting device, it is therefore easy to remove a core of material from a pile of very dry pulverulent material.
It should be noted that the arrangement of the duct 10 outside the part 3 on which it is mounted avoids a reduction in the section of the core and facilitates its removal when the part 2 has been moved away from the core. part 30

It is obvious that the invention is not exclusively limited to the embodiment shown and that many modifications can be made in the form, the arrangement and the constitution of some of the elements involved in its realization, provided that these the modifications do not contradict the object of each of the following claims.
