CLEANER-LIFT DEVICE FOR PULL-OUT AND BAGGING MACHINE
POTATOES OR SIMILAR TUBERS.
Machines for pulling and bagging potatoes or similar tubers essentially comprise one or two pulling coulters followed by a cleaning and lifting device which brings the potatoes onto a sieve or sorter which directs them into the bags.
The cleaning and lifting devices are usually constituted either by one or more endless conveyor belts, or by a rotating drum with inclined axis provided internally with one or more helical turns or pallets advancing the tubers backwards. of the machine. These devices have the drawback of being heavy and bulky.
The present invention relates to a cleaner-elevator device characterized by several rollers arranged in parallel in an inclined plane, driven in the same direction of rotation, and which comprise plane stars with curved branches convex in the direction of rotation, the branches of two neighboring stars of the same roller being arranged in staggered rows and their end penetrating between two stars of the neighboring roller when they rotate.
The appended drawings show schematically, by way of non-limiting example, one embodiment of the invention.
FIG. 1 shows in profile, with partial cut away of a spar, the inclined plane formed by the star rollers.
FIG. 2 is a plan of the cleaning and lifting device.
FIG. 3 represents, on a larger scale, the rollers seen in profile.
FIG. 4 shows partially on the same scale a roller seen from the front.

The advancement of the machine causes the plow, not shown and which may be of any known type, to penetrate into the ground, under the potato ball. This share can advantageously be extended by an openwork cradle which allows the crumbled earth to pass through and retains the tubers and blocks of earth which it directs towards the cleaning-elevator device.
This consists of two side members 1 and 2, made of hard wood, for example, in which the axes of the rollers can rotate freely.
For this purpose can be embedded in the side member of the bearings whose grease nipples have been shown schematically in 3.
At the end of each axis, outside the frame, is wedged a toothed pinion 4. A toothed pinion 5, rotating freely on a pin fixed to the longitudinal member, meshes with two neighboring pinions 4 so as to ensure rotation in the same direction of all the rollers of which only one is driven in a known manner not shown by the engine system of the machine such as auxiliary motor, power take-off or drive wheel.
The gear train 4 and 5 is advantageously enclosed in a casing which protects it from dust and sludge. '
Between the bearings, the axes 6 of the rollers have a regular polygonal section, square in the example shown, and parts formed of two cylindrical bases 7 and 8 and a flat star with six curved branches are threaded on this axis. 9 with rounded ends. These parts with stars are placed side by side on each axis so that:
1) the convexity of the curvature of the branches is directed in the direction of rotation of the rollers,
2) the branches of two neighboring stars of the same roll are staggered.
The axes are mounted in parallel on the side members at a distance such that the branches of the stars of one roller partially penetrate between two stars of a neighboring roller. For this purpose, to obtain the offset of the stars, a suitable washer 10 is placed at one end of each roll.
The thickness of the stars, their interval, the interpenetration of the neighboring rollers have been determined so as to allow only small potatoes forming waste without value to pass through this cleaner.
The rotation of the rollers in the direction indicated by the arrows causes a stirring of the tubers and their separation from the soil which surrounds them. The crumbled earth passes through the cleaner as the tubes are drawn upwards where they fall on the prior screen.
The stars can be in any material, metal, wood, plastic; however, they are preferably made of rubber or the like or of metal covered with rubber or the like in order to avoid this. to injure the tubers.
It goes without saying that the shapes, details, raw materials and various arrangements may vary without departing from the scope of the present invention. In particular the length of the star rollers and the number of rolls may vary with the width of the machine, the nature of harvest and cultivated land. Likewise, the control for the rotation of the star rollers may be of an entirely different type from that of the present description and drive the rollers at different rotation speeds. The number of 'branches of the stars may be different from six.
The invention is applicable to machines with one or more lifting coulters depending on whether they are constructed for lifting one or more rows of tubers.
